Football: Willian gem sinks Newcastle as Chelsea cement fourth place

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri warned his Chelsea stars to improve their mentality after Willian's sublime strike sealed a hard-fought 2-1 win over struggling Newcastle on Saturday (Jan 12).
Sarri's side took the lead through Pedro's early goal, but Ciaran Clark snatched a shock equaliser before half-time.
With Chelsea fans beginning to lose patience at their team's latest spluttering home display, Willian lifted the mood in the nick of time with his superb second-half curler.
Fourth-placed Chelsea have won five of their last seven league matches and sit six points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who lost at West Ham earlier on Saturday.
But, while Chelsea remain in control of the race to qualify for the Champions League, this was a far from convincing performance.
Labouring to beat third-bottom Newcastle showed how far Chelsea have to go to bridge the gap in class to leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City.
Sarri admitted he was frustrated with the way Chelsea took their foot off the gas after the opening goal.
"We started well for 10 minutes but after the goal we thought 'now it is easy', but it wasn't," Sarri said.
"We slept for 25 minutes and then we were in trouble. We were better in the second half but we need to improve the mental reaction.
"It is very difficult to understand. We stopped playing and then we had problems."

Sarri also revealed he has told Chelsea's hierarchy he needs a new midfielder to replace Cesc Fabregas, who joined Monaco on Friday.
"Jorginho was in trouble and on the bench there wasn't a player for that position. I need an option for that position," he sad.
"The club knows very well my opinion. It depends on the club decision. I cannot do anything more."
Another winter of discontent is brewing for Newcastle, wo have won only once in their last nine league games.
The Magpies' 18 points is their lowest tally after 22 matches of a top-flight season since they were relegated in 1988-89.
"We have to be better than three teams and if we play like today we can do it," Benitez said of Newcastle's relegation battle.
Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against Tottenham in the League Cup semi-final first leg was the latest display of attacking impotence from misfiring Chelsea, who had failed to score in their last two home league games.
But it took only nine minutes for the Blues to go in front as Newcastle's five-man defence was carved open with ease.
A fine long pass from Chelsea defender David Luiz caught Clark flat-footed.
Pedro timed his run behind Clark perfectly and held off the centre-back's weak attempt to recover as he lofted a delicate chip over Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka for his seventh goal of the season.
Chelsea dominated possession in the first half-hour, but they switched off at the back as Newcastle almost snatched an equaliser.

MASTERFUL FINISH

Salomon Rondon flicked a header towards Ayoze Perez and he accelerated away from Antonio Rudiger, only to shoot woefully wide with just Kepa Arrizabalaga to beat.
It was a warning that Sarri's men failed to heed and in the 40th minute Newcastle were level.
Matt Ritchie curled over an out-swinging corner and Clark muscled past Luiz to power a superb header past Kepa from 12 yards.
Once again, Sarri stubbornly stuck to his experiment with Eden Hazard as Chelsea's central striker despite the Belgian star's dislike of the tactic.
Hazard has now scored just four times in his last 17 games, suggesting he is much more effective in his natural role on the flanks.
With frustration mounting, a misplaced pass by Jorginho triggered angry moans from Chelsea fans, who booed the team off at half-time.
The atmosphere was on the verge of turning even more toxic until Willian came to the rescue in the 57th minute.
Teed up by Hazard at last making an incisive burst, Willian cut back inside two Newcastle defenders on the left side of the area before curling a masterful finish into the far corner.

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian captain Thiago Silva has been granted French citizenship, he announced on Twitter on Friday (March 15).
The 34-year-old's decision means PSG have an extra space in their squad for a non-EU player.
Silva has played 274 games since joining the reigning Ligue 1 champions in 2012 and has 77 caps for Brazil.
"Today me, my wife @Belle-Silva, and my children Isago and Iago have become French citizens. It's a very happy day for us because we have been in Paris for six-and-a-half years and we really feel at home," he said.
"Thanks to France, a country which has welcomed us so much where we have experienced some unforgettable moments. Vive la France," he added.

Bonucci gets flak for faulting Kean in racial row

Bonucci gets flak for faulting Kean in racial row
TURIN • Teammates are supposed to have each other's backs, but Leonardo Bonucci evidently thinks otherwise.
Rising starlet Moise Kean, who notched his first two goals for Italy during the international break as the Azzurri opened their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign with two straight victories, fired home his fourth league goal this season to seal Juventus' 2-0 win at Cagliari on Tuesday.
While the 19-year-old and teammates Blaise Matuidi and Alex Sandro had been targeted by monkey chants throughout the game, the noises increased in intensity after the forward celebrated his goal by standing in front of the home fans with outstretched arms.
Kean, who was born in Vercelli to Ivorian parents, later stood by his actions, posting on his Instagram page that it was "the best way to respond to racism".
But Bonucci, who opened the scoring, told Sky Italia that as he had incited the crowd, "the blame is 50-50".
The Italy defender said: "Kean knows that when he scores a goal, he has to focus on celebrating with his teammates.
"He knows he could've done something differently, too. Moise shouldn't have done that and the Curva (Cagliari fans) should not have reacted that way.
"We are professionals, we have to set the example and not provoke anyone."
Cagliari president Tommaso Giulini also described criticism of his team's supporters as "self-righteousness", while labelling Matuidi as a "drama queen".
Bonucci's comments, however, drew swift condemnation on social media and from fellow footballers including Memphis Depay and Christian Benteke.
Raheem Sterling, who has also been the subject of racist abuse while playing for both Manchester City and England, posted in response on his Instagram page that "all you can do now is laugh".
Juve midfielder Miralem Pjanic rejected Bonucci's insinuations, telling Football-Italia that taunts have "no place in football", while Matuidi also tweeted his support, using the hashtag #NoToRacism.
The abuse came on the same day that Aleksander Ceferin, president of European football governing body Uefa, said that he was "ashamed" by the spate of incidents - most recently when England played in Montenegro last week. He urged officials to "not to be afraid to act" to stop a match if things get out of order.

Football: Don't leave Man United alive in the tie, Pique warns Barca

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has urged his side to make sure they do not leave Manchester United room for another heroic comeback in the Champions League when they visit Old Trafford in Wednesday's eagerly-awaited quarter-final first leg.
United made history in the last-16 by overturning a 2-0 home defeat against Paris St Germain to win the tie on away goals with a dramatic 3-1 victory in the French capital, underlining the club's reputation for stirring European revivals.
"The PSG game should serve as an example for us that you cannot afford to leave Manchester United alive, if you can beat them with lots of goals then you have to do it," Pique told a news conference on Tuesday (April 9).
"In the first leg, PSG were the better side, they scored two goals and they could have scored more. United have a great history, in the second leg they played with lots of young lads from their academy and they still qualified.
"That game should remind us that we have to be very concentrated, as United are a very dangerous team."
Pique, 32, spent his first years as a professional with United, joining the club aged 17 but returning to Barca in 2008 after failing to hold down a place in the team due to fierce competition from Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Pique has turned into one of Barcelona's best ever defenders in his 11 years back at his boyhood club and is on course to win an eighth La Liga title with the Catalans, who are also in the Copa del Rey final and have the treble within their sights.
But he said his experience at United was invaluable to his development.
"I went from being kid to an adult here, I had my first experiences as a professional and some crazy experiences off the pitch. I came here alone, without my family, I learned a lot and I left a completely different person," he recalled.
Pique also said United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer helped him through difficult times in Manchester when they were team mates, and he praised the former Norway forward for reviving the club's fortunes since succeeding Jose Mourinho in December.
"I remember Ole as a great team mate, I was 17 and he was a veteran and for sure he helped me adapt to the club, to the country and to the city," Pique added.
"It was a great experience to train alongside him, he helped me a lot so I'm happy to see him in charge of Manchester United. He's done a great job, won lots of games and got them playing much better. Tomorrow will be tough and I hope we can win."

Football: Man City experience key in Premier League title race

Football: Man City experience key in Premier League title race

LONDON (AFP) - John Stones says the experience in the Manchester City dressing room will be vital as they aim to finish ahead of Liverpool in the thrilling race for the Premier League title.
City will retain the Premier League crown if they win their final two games against Leicester at home and Brighton away, but with Liverpool just a point behind, there is no room for error.
It is a totally different scenario from last season, when City romped to the title with five games to spare and went on to finish a record 19 points clear of nearest challengers Manchester United.
"Last season the league was done by now," said defender Stones. "It's a strange situation because some of us haven't been in this situation before.
"I think Vinny (Vincent Kompany) said that these are the times when it brings the best out of you as a player, but him as a player, David (Silva), Sergio (Aguero) and a few of the others have been in this situation before. They know what the feeling is, how to get the best out of it.
"We've got to be guided by those and try to take everything in. It makes everything exciting, keeps everyone on our toes."
The England player said the tightness of the race was "making us hungrier to keep winning, keep the pressure on and keep fighting until we can't any more. It's exciting to be part of it".
Stones feels winning this year's title would be more special than last campaign's success because it would make City the first team to win two in succession for a decade.
The 24-year-old said: "It'll be special because it will be back to back, not because we've been pushed by Liverpool.
"I think it's better for the football fans in general that it's gone so late in the season and nobody has won it yet.
City have won their past 12 Premier League games and Stones realises there is still no room to ease up.
He said: "Nobody in our dressing room will take these last games lightly and say these are easy wins.
"Never underestimate any team that's lower in the league than you are, that's when you start to become complacent and slip up yourselves.
"I think as players we go in and attack the games as difficult, respect our opponents and try to play our game."

Football: Impressive Lyon plunge Thierry Henry's Monaco deeper into crisis

PARIS (AFP) - Lyon dominated struggling Monaco from beginning to end on Sunday (Dec 16) to climb back into the Ligue 1 top three and bury Thierry Henry's side deeper in the relegation zone.
Lyon kept pace with Lille, who won 3-2 at Nimes earlier despite playing much of the match with 10 men.
Lille are three points ahead of Lyon, who have a game in hand, and five ahead of Montpellier, who did not play for a second consecutive week, and have played two fewer matches.
The French title race is all but over with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain 10 points clear, but a young Lille side are eyeing a return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2012, while Lyon, who squeaked into the last 16 in Europe in midweek, are seeking to ensure they will be back next year.
"This match was one of our most dominant performances in the league," said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. "Even with superiority, we continued to play simply, to work for each other." Lyon took the lead in only the sixth minute with a goal by Houssem Aouar, his sixth of the season.
Nabil Fekir added the second in the 34th minute. Kenny Tete shrugged off a timid challenge to pull back a low cross which Fekir attacked while Monaco's Jemerson hesitated.
Monaco managed only one shot all game. They played almost the whole second half with 10 men after Aleksandr Golovin raked his studs down the back of Fekir's calf in the 47th minute and was sent off.
Ferland Mendy added a deserved third for Lyon just before the hour mark.
"The match in Kiev on Wednesday made us realise that we had a strong group," said Genesio. "And that we had to stop the childish attitudes that we have seen on some matches."
Monaco, the only team in the bottom half of the French league table to play this weekend, meekly wasted a chance to gain ground on their rivals.
"We have to look at the first goal we conceded and especially the second goal which summed up this game," Henry said. "Winning without desire is hard.
"We have to try to put this game behind us, we have a big game against Guingamp next week."
Earlier, in-form striker Nicolas Pepe scored what proved to be the winner as 10-man Lille won at Nimes.
"What a match, I'm really proud of my players," said Lille coach Christophe Galtier. "We must not forget that we played for more than an hour and 20 minutes with 10 men.
"With the added time, it was a very long and hard match physically." Portuguese teenager Rafael Leao headed Lille into a fourth-minute lead, but Galtier's men suffered a setback when former Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte was sent off in the 16th minute.
Jonathan Bamba's deflected effort doubled the advantage shortly before the interval, though, and Pepe appeared to have made the points safe midway through the second half with his 12th goal of the campaign.
"After the PSG strikers, Pepe and Bamba are the best," said Nimes coach Bernard Blaquart.
The 10 men finally started to tire late on, but Lille held on for victory despite Nimes goals from Rachid Alioui and Clement Depres.

Rodgers sees 'good signs' despite Foxes' last-gasp loss

LONDON • Nobody said Brendan Rodgers had taken the easy option in swopping Celtic for Leicester.
His new charges seemed to have done enough to earn a draw against a dynamic Watford team who led for much of yesterday's Premier League game after Troy Deeney's fifth-minute opener.
They clawed their way back through Jamie Vardy in the 75th minute, but Watford substitute Andre Gray scored in added time to undo their hard work and send Javi Gracia's side level on points with seventh-placed Wolves.
Rodgers was announced over the public address system as the former Watford manager before the start, but the boos that followed rang more of duty than spite.
Watford roared out of the blocks and Deeney's faintest of flicks from Gerard Deulofeu's free kick carried the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.
Leicester responded to the goal with flickers of promise, but their first half was one of nearly moments rather than clear chances.
After the break, it was more of the same and Wilfred Ndidi's 74th-minute cross, which clipped the crossbar, was as close as the Foxes had come to a goal.
But their equaliser arrived within moments after as Youri Tielemans slid in Vardy, who nudged past the onrushing Ben Foster with the outside of his boot.
A draw seemed fair but, in added time, Gray ran on to Deeney's reverse pass after a Leicester clearance had been headed back towards the danger zone and finished coolly to spark wild celebrations in the stands.
Afterwards, Rodgers told BBC Sport he saw "some good points today" despite the heartbreaking manner of their 2-1 defeat.
He said: "The goal at the end is a case of managing the game. It is something that will get better as we work together. I was pleased with the spirit of the team.
"There were a lot of good signs. I was pleased despite not getting the result.
"It has been a great week working with the players. I said whatever the result, for me, I only wanted to see spirit and intensity and I saw that. It gives us a great opportunity to go forward."

LONDON • Pep Guardiola has denied Manchester City are lacking motivation in their bid to reel in Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The champions blew a golden opportunity to close the gap to one point in midweek when they slumped to a shock loss at Newcastle and they rued that even more the day after when the Reds dropped two points at home to Leicester.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, Guardiola was in a defiant mood, claiming his players "would not be here" if they were not up for "the challenge".
He told reporters: "We are not happy about the last performance. We knew immediately at half-time and after, we know that.
"(But) that is the process many times when people say (we are) the perfect team and invincibles. Every game is a challenge to see what we can do better and how we can beat the opponents.
"All the results this week it was difficult for (Manchester) United and the teams in the top six to win their games. There are a lot of games and to sustain, it is tough."
Although he was comforted after the Liverpool draw, he warned his players if "their level was the last game, (then) it doesn't matter".
The 48-year-old also brushed off the controversy surrounding a now-deleted tweet from City defender Kyle Walker, who appeared to mock the league front runners following their slip-up at Anfield, saying he was "not concerned as I can't control it".

DENIS THE MENACE?
He has adapted very quickly and also his ambition, he wants to do something important here. It is a good challenge for him and for us.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, on new boy Denis Suarez who is on loan from Barcelona.

Turning his attention to their league game with Arsenal at the Etihad tomorrow, Guardiola felt Unai Emery's men "were a tough side", before singling out Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira, Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as their dangermen.
New loanee Denis Suarez will likely be given his debut against his former club given that Arsenal have "a lot of problems with wingers".
The Spain midfielder, who made only two appearances for City from 2011-13 before returning to his country, was the Gunners' sole signing in the January transfer window, which closed on Thursday evening.
Arsenal have the option to make his loan move from Barcelona permanent for £20 million (S$35.3 million) in the summer and Suarez knows impressing against City will go a long way to ensuring his future remains at the Emirates.
His manager Emery also backed the 25-year-old to win over naysayers like pundit Alan Smith, who has dismissed him as nothing more than a "squad player".
The former Arsenal striker told the Mirror: "How much will he play though? Arsenal fans would have loved to have seen a little bit more business in January."
But Emery defended their lack of activity in the market, insisting Suarez's qualities "can help us".
He said at his pre-game interview: "I know the player (the Spaniard coached him at Sevilla in the 2014-15 season). He started individual training yesterday and today, with the group.
"He has adapted very quickly and also his ambition, he wants to do something important here. It is a good challenge for him and for us."
Denying that Suarez's arrival meant there would be even less playing time for Mesut Ozil, Emery insisted there was "no change" in the squad's pecking order.
He also confirmed his side's defensive crisis had eased up slightly, with captain Laurent Koscielny back in full training and in contention to play against Guardiola's men.

Football: Noh Rahman embracing learning curve as Home United interim coach

SINGAPORE - Former national football stalwart Noh Rahman got his Singapore Premier League (SPL) coaching career off to the best possible start on Wednesday (April 24), after he guided Home United to a polished 3-0 win over Geylang International.
But the 38-year-old, who took over the reins of the Protectors on an interim basis from Saswadimata Dasuki last Friday, said he hasn't had much time to bask in the maiden victory.
With a wry smile, Noh told The Straits Times on Friday (April 26): "Being a player and a coach are two very different things. As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games.
"As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game."
Noh is expecting a tougher challenge on Saturday against 2018 champions Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium.
The Japanese team went undefeated last term en route to a third straight league championship, but a new league rule has meant that for this term, Albirex have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two starting and playing the entire first half.
Albirex are smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Hougang United on Wednesday - their second loss of the season - and are currently fourth in the SPL after seven games with 11 points, one ahead of Home.
Said Noh: "It's a 5.30pm kickoff, on a hard (artificial) ground, and it could be hot. We are expecting a tough game."

During a 20-year playing career which he called time on at the end of 2016, Noh earned 79 international caps as well as a reputation as being one of the most professional local footballers.
Widely respected by his peers, he won two S.League (SPL's predecessor) titles (2001, 2002), two Singapore Cups (2012, 2013) and two AFF Suzuki Cups (2004, 2007).
The former defender told ST that one of the first things he did after being appointed Home's interim coach, was to consult a group of six senior players.
"It was quite a lengthy meeting where we shared quite a lot of things, and I appreciate the players being honest," said the rookie coach.
Veteran fullback Juma'at Jantan, 35, was one of the players involved in the meeting.
Said Juma'at: "In football, one of the most important things is communication. If we have that, things will fall in place.
"Noh is a no-nonsense type on and off the field, and the players - even myself now - look up to him. And he is open (to feedback) as well, so I think he is the best choice to lead the team for now."
Juma'at is one of four players in the current Home squad - the others are Izzdin Shafiq, Abdil Qaiyyim and South Korean midfielder Song Ui-Yong - who were teammates with Noh when he played for the Protectors from 2013 to 2015.
When asked if he felt weird coaching players he once shared a pitch and changing room with, Noh said: "Yes, a little bit!
"But these players are great, they know where the line between a coach and the players is. And I appreciate the fact they understand their roles in the team well."
Protectors youngster Adam Swandi recalled that Noh was one of the established senior national players when he received his first Lions call-up in 2013.
The 23-year-old, who scored against Geylang on Wednesday, said: "Coach Noh has a lot of experience, and he is a role model for players like me.
"He has so much to offer our team and Singapore football, and I think him being in charge of the team now is a good thing."
Noh said he has been told by the club it would appoint the new head coach within six weeks, and is looking forward to returning his role at the start of the season, which he said was "to assist and learn".
"I'm not shy in saying I feel I am not ready for a head coach job like this," said Noh. "But it's a challenge I am ready to take on."

Football: Quadruple still on as Jesus heads City into FA Cup final

LONDON (REUTERS) The "impossible" quadruple dream remains intact for Manchester City after an early headed goal from Gabriel Jesus sealed a scrappy 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday (April 6) to put them into the FA Cup final.
Jesus launched himself into the air to connect decisively in the third minute but City never hit top gear and they rather laboured to victory in an instantly forgettable match.
Nevertheless, after bagging the League Cup, being locked in a titanic battle with Liverpool for the Premier League title and in the Champions League quarter-finals, Pep Guardiola's side remain on course for an unprecedented clean sweep.
It was a tired-looking display against Premier League relegation battlers Brighton, though, and City will need to rediscover their spark ahead of Tuesday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Champions League last-eight tie.
Guardiola was quick to play down the "Q" word.
"My opinion is that nobody has done it (won the quadruple) so why can we do it?," Guardiola said.
"It is almost impossible to achieve everything, that is the truth. Our fans will come, more than today, for the final, we are losing players every game but still we will try to do it.
"I am happy to be in the final, we extend our season by one more week and we are happy for that."

Back at Wembley where they beat Chelsea on penalties to win the League Cup in February, City were huge favourites to get past a Brighton side with other things on their mind.
Whatever plan Brighton boss Chris Hughton had cooked up to stop a City side who had won 20 of their last 22 matches in all competitions was in tatters after only three minutes.
In one of the only fluid moves they put together all afternoon at a less-than-full Wembley, Kevin de Bruyne whipped in a superb low cross and Jesus arrived at the far post to plant a diving header past Brighton keeper Matthew Ryan.
The Brighton fans, who greatly outnumbered City's in the 71,000 crowd, must have feared the worst in the south coast's club's first FA Cup semi-final since 1983 when they beat Sheffield Wednesday before losing the final to Manchester United in a replay after the first game ended 2-2.
But the onslaught never arrived.
And had City fullback Kyle Walker been shown a red card during the first half after a clash with Alireza Jahanbakhsh the outcome could have been different.
REACTED ANGRILY
Walker reacted angrily after being shoved in the back and as the players squared up face to face, he appeared to move his head into Jahanbakhsh forehead.
The incident went to the VAR, which is being used in the FA Cup, but referee Anthony Taylor was not required to send Walker off, although he was replaced at halftime by Danilo.
"I have seen it a few times and my opinion is it is a red card," Hughton said. "If Alireza goes down clutching his head it would have been a different outcome."
Brighton gradually grew in belief and but for a superb goal-line clearance by Aymeric Laporte they could have drawn level, the Frenchman hacking clear just when Glenn Murray seemed poised to equalise early in the second half.
Hughton's side caused the occasional problem from set-pieces and with City unusually lethargic the result was never in the bag until referee Anthony Taylor blew for fulltime.
City will face the winners of Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers who meet in the second semi-final on Sunday.

'Special' Watford can beat City: Troy

'Special' Watford can beat City: Troy

LONDON • Despite English bookmakers installing Manchester City as the 7/19 odds-on favourites ahead of the FA Cup final on May 18, Troy Deeney has the utmost faith his Watford side are "going to show we can beat them".
After achieving mission improbable on Sunday to win a semi-final tie that had looked lost, coming from two goals down to oust Wolves 3-2 in extra time, the captain has every reason to believe the magic of the Cup is very much alive and well this season.
Hailing his team as "special", the club's longest-serving player since joining in 2010 told BT Sport: "We know City are a real formidable team, one of the best in Europe, but it's a one-off game.
"We're coming in with belief, we're not naive enough to think it's going to be easy, but we know this hard work can take us a long way.
"We're not the most talented, but the hard work, the desire, you see it there."
The burly striker got the crucial equaliser in stoppage time, keeping his nerves to ram home his penalty, which was awarded after he was brought down in the box by Belgium defender Leander Dendoncker.
The fightback on Sunday was, however, sparked by Spain winger Gerard Deulofeu, who came off the bench to score a brace, and Deeney paid tribute to his teammate, saying: "Two goals down, many teams would have called it a day. But we kept going, brought the little man on, (he) added his bit of magic and the rest is just hard work."
Ireland wing-back Matt Doherty's first-half opener and a second-half strike from Mexico striker Raul Jimenez, who Deeney called a "loser" for wearing a luchador wrestling mask to celebrate, had seemingly set Wolves on the path to their first FA Cup final since 1960 in a full-blooded tie.
However, it is the Hornets who will head to Wembley for their first Cup final since 1984, with manager Javi Gracia indebted to Deulofeu for taking his "anger" out on Wolves after being dropped from the first XI.
The Spaniard said: "Gerard was angry when we started to play, but I like to see my players with that attitude, when they are angry, to show what they are able to do.
"We knew before the game that Gerard would be important during the game, when more spaces were created.
"His first goal was high quality, but it wasn't a surprise to me because I see him in training."
While the victory sparked joyous scenes among the Watford players and their fans, Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo could only reflect on what might have been.
Admitting it was "a moment of real pain", he lamented the way his team failed to manage the closing minutes of normal time, adding: "It's disappointment, sadness. We had it and it went away from us.
"We realised that extra time would be tougher for us because the momentum was with Watford. What had just happened was difficult to erase from our minds."

Football: Salah, Origi strike to give Liverpool Champions League triumph

MADRID (REUTERS) - Liverpool ended an incredible season by winning Europe’s biggest prize after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Saturday’s (June 1) all-English Champions League final, earning sweet redemption after agonisingly missing out on the Premier League title.
Mohamed Salah scored the second-quickest goal in a Champions League final by converting from the penalty spot in the second minute while Divock Origi sealed victory in the 87th after Liverpool had survived some heavy late pressure from Spurs.
Tottenham, in their first European Cup final, kept their heads after the early setback and came to life when semi-final hat-trick hero Lucas Moura was brought on but, with Harry Kane lacking sharpness, another European comeback was beyond them.
Liverpool, who missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by one point, did not produce their usual whirlwind attacking game but Salah’s debatable penalty and Origi’s arrowed finish sealed a sixth European Cup triumph.
“Everyone is happy now,” said Salah as the Liverpool fans rejoiced. “I am glad to play the second final in a row and play 90 minutes finally. Everyone did his best today, no great individual performances, all the team was unbelievable.”
Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold who had marauded down the flank all night, added: “It is hard to put into words. The season we have had, we deserved it more than any other team.”
The win at the Wanda Metropolitano was sweet redemption for Salah and especially Klopp, who had suffered defeat in his last six major finals, including Champions League showpieces with Borussia Dortmund in 2013 and Liverpool last year.
“I am so happy for the boys all these people, and my family. They suffer for me, they deserve it more than anybody,” said the elated German.
“Did you ever see a team like, this, fighting with no fuel in the tank? And we have a keeper (Alisson Becker) who makes difficult things look easy. It is the best night of our professional lives.”
His opposite number Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s determined efforts to get themselves back into the game.
“We were fighting, and we played so well in the second half. I feel so proud, a little bit unlucky. To be 1-0 down from the start was tough, we changed our plans but we are very proud of these players and these fans. We can be optimistic.”

OUTSTANDING SEASON

Liverpool’s win was reward for an outstanding season in which they picked up a club record 97 points in the Premier League but finished behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, falling just short of a first league title in 29 years.
However, a sixth European Cup, which took them ahead of Barcelona and Bayern Munich on the all-time list and means they only trail AC Milan on seven triumphs and Real Madrid with 13, will help to compensate for that disappointment.

It was Liverpool’s first Champions League triumph since their incredible comeback against Milan in 2005 and, while this victory lacked the blockbuster drama of that night in Istanbul, it was not exactly a smooth ride in a lacklustre affair.
Tottenham manager Pochettino took a bold but ultimately misguided gamble in fielding Kane, who had only returned to full training a week ago after almost two months out with a serious ankle injury and struggled to influence play.

The England striker was far from the only player from both sides who lacked sharpness in a game with few moments of quality, a possible effect of neither side having played any competitive games for three weeks after the domestic season.
Spurs put Liverpool under real pressure in the latter stages as Dele Alli headed over and Son Heung-min and Moura forced impressive saves from Alisson, who also pulled off his best effort to beat away a free kick from Christian Eriksen.
The Brazilian keeper’s reliable display was in stark contrast to what happened last year in Kiev, when Liverpool’s Loris Karius made two horrendous errors which cost his side two goals in their painful 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid.
When the final whistle went, Alisson was mobbed by his team mates while Klopp ran on to the pitch to embrace Origi, one of the heroes in the stunning semi-final second-leg turnaround against Barcelona, who killed the game with a ruthless finish.

Messi: Ever-changing role but a constant genius

Messi: Ever-changing role but a constant genius
BARCELONA • Still, they gasp.
Still, after all Lionel Messi has done, long after his brilliance should have become commonplace, he can still bring a Nou Camp crowd of nearly 100,000 to its feet.
Even when everything is in flux - when Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo can miss out on the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2010, when guards seem to be changing - a 3-0 quarter-final, second-leg win over Manchester United featured football's one great, enduring constant.
That is Messi beaming after scoring and opponents left staring at a genius that defies belief.
This is, at a rough estimate, the fourth iteration of Messi, the latest in a series of upgrades from a winger to playing centrally to a false nine and now a position that defies categorisation.
It is tempting to wonder if this is going to be his ultimate form - listed as an attacker, but no longer hidebound by fixed positions.
He now goes where he likes, when he likes on the pitch, stationing himself in whatever position he thinks will cause most damage.
His teammates make the necessary adjustments as the Argentinian gets to work, which United found to their detriment on Tuesday night as he bagged his 23rd and 24th goals against English clubs - more than any other player.

But his genius is not something Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde "is going to apologise for".
He said post-game: "Messi always gets us out of trouble... Leo always turns up in the important games, not just in the big moments, but throughout the whole game."
There are, without doubt, flaws in this Barcelona team, spaces to exploit, weaknesses to expose. Yet as long as the 31-year-old is playing, they may not matter, with his side into the semi-finals for the first time since 2015.
While he is not taking anything for granted, declaring "any team (in the last four) is complicated", Messi is now three games from equalling Ronaldo's record of five Champions League winning medals.
Although his rival extended his record goal tally in the competition to 126, he was unable to end Juve's 23-year European Cup drought - the reason he was signed last July.
Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri has, however, defended him and their €100 million (S$153 million) outlay, insisting: "Ronaldo gave us a lot during the season. We signed him to increase our chances... In football, one plus one doesn't always make two. "
Italian dailies have likened their exit to an "apocalypse" as Juve shares yesterday lost more than €270 million, or 16 per cent.
Spanish news outlets, on the other hand, believe that with Messi, "this is our year".

Football: Kramaric nets late winner as Croatia beat Azerbaijan 2-1

ZAGREB (REUTERS) - Croatia were forced to dig deep as they came from behind to beat unfancied Azerbaijan 2-1 at home in their opening Euro 2020 Group E qualifier after forward Andrej Kramaric scored a 79th winner on Thursday (March 21).
In the group's other fixture, Slovakia eased to a 2-0 home win against Hungary thanks to midfielder Ondrej Duda's first-half opener and Albert Rusnak's 85th-minute goal in Trnava.
The Croatians dominated from the start at Maksimir stadium but the Azeris stunned the vocal home crowd when forward Ramil Sheydaev gave them a 19th-minute lead with a superb goal.
Sheydaev, who came close to scoring two minutes earlier, beat central defender Duje Caleta-Car with some neat footwork before drilling the ball past keeper Lovre Kalinic.
Croatia piled on the pressure and captain Luka Modric glanced a header just wide from a cross by Borna Barisic shortly before the left back levelled with his first international goal.
Caleta-Car saw his header from a corner cleared off the line by Dmitri Nazarov but Barisic was well placed to scramble home the equaliser from close range in the 44th.
It looked set to be a frustrating night for Croatia as Azeri keeper Salahat Agayev made a string of fine saves in the second half to deny Modric, Bruno Petkovic and Josip Brekalo.
Agayev also dealt with a flurry of crosses from either flank as the packed visiting defence came under relentless pressure but he could do nothing about Kramaric's sumptuous strike.
A ricochet off a defender fell kindly for the striker, who side-stepped his marker before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner from 15 metres to delight the home fans.
On Sunday (March 24), Wales open their Group E campaign at home to Slovakia while Croatia visit Hungary.

Football: Willian eager to stay at Chelsea despite exit rumours

LONDON (AFP) - Willian insisted he had no intention of leaving Chelsea after his superb goal sealed a 2-1 win at home to Newcastle on Saturday (Jan 12).
Newcastle, threatened with relegation from the Premier League, had seen Ciaran Clark score a surprise equaliser before half-time after an early goal from Pedro put Chelsea ahead at Stamford Bridge.
But with the Magpies making life tough for their hosts, Willian's brilliant curling shot in the 57th minute secured all three points for the Blues.
It was just his fifth goal of the season and first in the league since October but Willian told BT Sport: "I think it's always difficult in the Premier League.
"We have to be more clinical... I scored a good goal. I found the space and put the ball exactly where I wanted."
Willian has been repeatedly linked with a move away from Chelsea but he was adamant he wanted to stay at the west London club.
"My future is here at Chelsea, I don't know what you're talking about," he said.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri was equally keen for Willian to remain a member of his squad, especially as he is deploying Eden Hazard as a striker.
"You know very well that Willian for us is a very important player," Sarri told reporters.
"In my opinion, Willian has to stay with us.
"With Eden playing as a striker we need wingers. In this moment he is a fundamental player."

Victory saw fourth-placed Chelsea open up a six-point lead over London rivals Arsenal in the race for a place in next season's Champions League.
But Sarri was unhappy with the way the Blues struggled to see off a Newcastle side stuck in the relegation zone.
"I am very happy with the result but the performance was not so good, especially between 1-0 and 1-1," he said.
Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez was proud of the way his players had pushed Chelsea hard but accepted they had been undone by a sublime goal.
"We conceded a goal we could avoid but after that we were fighting for every ball; these players care you could see that," Benitez told the BBC.
"We scored and then controlled the last few minutes of the first half so it's a pity but a piece of quality made the difference.
"You could see a lot of positives with the performance but no points."
