Football: Kane insists club rivalries will not split England camp

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Harry Kane insists the Three Lions' squad are too united to be divided by the tension of club rivalries surrounding the Premier League title race and upcoming Champions League ties.
Four English sides have reached the last eight of the Champions League for the first time in a decade with Tottenham striker Kane set to face a host of international teammates who play for Manchester City three times next month in two legs of a quarter-final and a vital Premier League match.
City and Liverpool are vying for the Premier League title, while Spurs face competition from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea for a top-four finish.
However, unlike England camps of old where club rivalries led to factions forming on international duty, Kane believes Gareth Southgate's squad will not be distracted ahead of Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic on Friday and away to Montenegro on Monday.
"We put that to one side, even the Liverpool and City boys. When we are here it is 100 percent England and when we go back I'm sure there will plenty of text messages and group messages flying about," said Kane on Tuesday (March 19).
"We've got a great bond here and at the end of the day we are good friends.
"Whether we play for one club or another, when we come here we get on very well.
"Of course when we are back at our clubs we try 110 percent to try and beat each other but we have that respect for each other that we can talk afterwards and be friends."
After a run to the last four of the World Cup last summer and qualifying for the Nations League semi-finals to come in June, England are one of the favourites to win the European championships next year.
Wembley will host the semi-finals and final of that tournament, while England will also play their group games on home soil should they qualify.
And Kane admitted that is extra motivation as the qualifying campaign gets underway on Friday.
"It is a great incentive to have the opportunity to play in a European Championship where we could have quite a few games at Wembley," he added.
"It is exciting. People expect us to qualify and they think it is going to be an easy group but it is never that easy.
"We have to go and be professional. Of course we back ourselves to go through but we still have to go and do it. It is important we start well and hopefully build on that."
At 25, Kane is one of the senior members of Southgate's squad with Declan Rice and Callum Hudson-Odoi winning their first call-ups to add to a growing pool of young talent.
Rice has switched his allegiance to the country of his birth after playing three times for the Republic of Ireland in friendlies.
Kane also had the chance to represent Ireland via his paternal grandparents, but said he never considered anything other than playing for England.
However, he believes no one can blame the West Ham midfielder for his decision.
"I'm sure it was a tough decision," said Kane.
"He seems like a great lad and enjoying his football and he's been having a great season.
"I'm sure he took his time and the decision he made is what he thought will be best for his future and nobody can blame him for that."

Football: New signing Fabregas hands Monaco first win in seven French league games

PARIS (REUTERS) - Cesc Fabregas netted his first goal with Monaco to give the struggling principality side their first French Ligue 1 win in seven matches as they beat visiting Toulouse 2-1 on Saturday (Feb 2).
The Spanish midfielder, who joined from Chelsea last month, fired home in the second half to help Monaco move from 19th to 18th in the standings and claim their first victory at home in the league.
They have 18 points from 23 games and are level on points with 17th-placed Caen, who have a game in hand.
In coach Leonardo Jardim's second game since he returned to the bench after Thierry Henry was sacked last week, Monaco showed some steel.
"I have congratulated the players for the first three points of this mini-league. Now we have to prepare for the next game," said Jardim.
"The last minutes were difficult. Even if we manage to forget the past, we hadn't won in a long time and it can get a little scary."
Monaco opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Aleksandr Golovin latched on to a Gelson Martins cross, only for Christopher Jullien to level five minutes later from close range.
The 31-year-old Fabregas, however, restored the advantage with a right-footed striker from the spot that went under the bar in the 62nd minute.
In Jardim's first game in charge earlier this week, Monaco were knocked out of the League Cup semi-finals by Guingamp on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Marseille dropped to 10th on 31 points after they lost 2-1 at Reims, with Clinton Njie's last-gasp goal being too little, too late after Tristan Dingome and Suk Hyun-jun had put the hosts in a comfortable position.

Football: Kane penalty gives Tottenham edge over Chelsea in League Cup

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage in their League Cup semi-final against London rivals Chelsea as Harry Kane's penalty earned them a 1-0 win in the first leg at Wembley on Tuesday (Jan 8).
Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.
The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kane tucked away the penalty with his usual aplomb to move fourth, above Cliff Jones, on Tottenham's all-time list of goalscorers.
Chelsea, who were far better than in their 3-1 Premier League defeat to Tottenham in November, could count themselves unlucky though as they twice hit the woodwork before the break and completely dominated the second half.
Tottenham had to defend desperately at times and keeper Paulo Gazzaniga was forced into making several sharp saves.
The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on Jan 24.
Tottenham are looking to win their first silverware under manager Mauricio Pochettino and their first trophy since beating Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final.
Holders Manchester City face Burton Albion in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

Football: Kean winner puts Juventus on brink of Serie A title

MILAN (AFP) - Teenage sensation Moise Kean scored the winner to put Juventus one step away from an eighth consecutive Serie A title on Saturday (April 6) as a 2-1 comeback win over AC Milan pushed the champions 21 points clear at the top.
Kean - the victim of racist abuse earlier this week in Cagliari - came on as a substitute and fired in the winner on 84 minutes for his fifth goal in as many league games.
The Turin giants will seal a 35th Scudetto on Sunday with seven matches to spare - the earliest any team has won Serie A - if second-placed Napoli lose at home against Genoa.
Juventus were playing without injured striker Cristiano Ronaldo, recovering from a thigh injury, as they prepare for their Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Ajax.
But 19-year-old Kean has stepped up in the absence of the Portuguese superstar who is battling to be fit for Wednesday's game in Amsterdam.
"Even today Kean came on and scored, he is very good at that," said Allegri of the youngster who also scored twice in two Euro 2020 qualifiers for Italy.
"He's a young man who is doing very well, but let's leave him to be calm.
"Will he play on Wednesday (against Ajax)? We'll see, the substitutes are important as we saw today."
Krzysztof Piatek had put visiting AC Milan ahead five minutes before the break with his 21st goal of the season. Paulo Dybala pulled the hosts level from the spot on the hour mark.

ROMA BACK WINNING

For Milan, the defeat further damages their Champions League ambitions with just one point from their last four Serie A games.
Gennaro Gattuso's side are fourth but can be overtaken by Atalanta, who are one point behind and travel to third-placed Inter Milan on Sunday.
Roma, also targeting a Champions League berth, got back winning with captain Daniele De Rossi scoring the only goal against Sampdoria, to sit sixth, equal on points with Atalanta.
"We still have a chance to qualify for the Champions League if we beat Lazio next Saturday," said Gattuso, as they target a first Champions League campaign since 2013-14.
The visitors had come out firing.
Piatek missed a chance after two minutes, heading wide from Suso's cross. Franck Kessie was also off target early.
Sami Khedira came on for the first time since heart surgery a month ago, replacing fellow German Emre Can who went off early with an ankle sprain.
Milan were denied a penalty when Alex Sandro handled Hakan Calhanoglu's cross. The referee decided it was unintentional after a VAR review.
Minutes later, Piatek broke through to beat fellow Pole Wojciech Szczesny following a blunder from former Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci, who had been widely criticised for comments he made over the racist abuse Kean suffered in Cagliari.
Tiemoue Bakayoko pounced on his sloppy pass to burst through for Piatek to score.
Mario Mandzukic almost grabbed the equaliser before the break but Pepe Reina, at full stretch, tipped clear the Croat's acrobatic effort.
A reckless Mateo Musacchio foul on fellow Argentine Dybala allowed the hosts to pull level.
Kean came on for Dybala and 20 minutes later delivered the winner as Bonucci rushed to celebrate with the striker he had blamed for partly inciting a barrage of racist abuse in Sardinia.
In Genoa, De Rossi gave new coach Claudio Ranieri's just his second win in five games since taking over.
The captain finished off a rebound on 75 minutes after a Patrik Schick header was cleared.
Torino dropped out of the Europa League places with a goalless draw at Parma, as Lazio, with a game in hand, look to keep in the Champions League chase at home against Sassuolo on Sunday.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Everton 1
Arsenal 0
LONDON • Just when it seemed Arsenal had discovered the resolve and momentum to propel themselves into next season's Champions League, they reverted to being, well, Arsenal.
The old flaws of recent years - weak defending and character in particular - returned at Goodison Park to dash Unai Emery's hopes of reclaiming third place and tighten their grip on a top-four finish.
Everton were more comfortable and deserving winners than yesterday's 1-0 scoreline suggests.
Phil Jagielka, a late inclusion in Marco Silva's starting line-up, pounced early to give the hosts a third consecutive Premier League victory and their second in successive home games against a member of the "Big Six".
The Portuguese manager's side were dynamic, industrious and resilient in every department, while Arsenal were found wanting on every score.
They have recorded only one away win in the league since November and, with only two of their remaining six matches at the Emirates Stadium, the biggest obstacle to their chances of rejoining the European elite is obvious.
Emery's latest attempt to remedy the sequence was as ineffectual as his team.

NULLIFYING THE GUNNERS
We got one goal, but could have had a few more. They're a very good team and have proved that all season, but it's nice to beat one of the so-called bigger boys. I'm not normally a match-winner, but it was good. They're the best goals, tap-ins from two or three yards out.
PHIL JAGIELKA, Everton's match-winner, savouring his goal.

BAD DAY AT THE OFFICE
It was a disappointing result. We played okay, but we didn't have many chances to score. We conceded an unlucky goal at the beginning of the game from a throw-in and it was difficult to play against a deep defence.
BERND LENO, Arsenal goalkeeper, lamenting his side's slow start to the game.

Jagielka was summoned into the starting line-up only minutes before kick-off after Michael Keane fell ill during the warm-up.
The 36-year-old has endured a frustrating campaign on the sidelines, with injury and heightened competition restricting him to only three league starts, but that was forgotten as he swept Everton into a lead their first-half display richly deserved.
The breakthrough reflected much of the opening 45 minutes - direct and effective by the hosts, weak and careless from the visitors.
Lucas Digne, who was also feeling the effects of a virus before kick-off, launched a long throw into the Arsenal penalty area that Jagielka won comfortably.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin won the second ball with a diving header that deflected back to the veteran defender and, onside and unmarked, Jagielka beat Bernd Leno with a close-range finish to become the oldest player at 36 to score in the league this season.
The early setback for Arsenal continued their record of conceding in every league game on the road this season, the only club in England's top-four divisions to do so.
But, while Everton were given the licence to dictate proceedings in the first half, they were also helped by Emery's 5-3-2 formation and his decision to omit Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the starting line-up.
The introduction of the duo at the start of the second half, and the switch to 4-3-3, was the manager's admission of his own mistakes.
The brittle defending and lack of movement were, however, entirely the responsibility of his players.
The Gunners improved as an attacking unit after the interval, but the Toffees were the brighter, stronger and more dangerous unit throughout.
Only their failure to land a second blow on Arsenal's glass jaw kept the contest alive longer than it should have been.

Football: Gonzalo Higuain must earn permanent Chelsea deal: Maurizio Sarri

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is confident Gonzalo Higuain can be the short-term solution to his side's need for goals and urged the Argentinian to earn a permanent move to the Premier League.
Higuain sealed a loan move until the end of the season on Wednesday (Jan 23) from parent club Juventus having spent a troubled first half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan.
Sarri has fond memories of his one previous season together with Higuain when the striker scored a record 36 Serie A goals in a single campaign.
Now he hopes Higuain can reignite Chelsea's spluttering attack and earn a long-term switch to Stamford Bridge in the process.
"For sure, he is one of the best strikers in my career," said Sarri, who will have to cope without Higuain for Thursday's League Cup semi-final, second leg against Tottenham.
"It's up to him, I think. He has to score, first of all. I think that for a long-term contract, he has to do very well.
"He has to play. He has to score. He has to be useful for the team."
After an excellent start to Sarri's reign in charge, Chelsea have stumbled since losing for the first time under the Italian against Spurs at the end of November.
A run of four defeats in 11 Premier League games has coincided with Sarri's decision to move Eden Hazard into the middle of his front three with the Belgian's impact limited.
Higuain has struggled since being forced out of Juventus in the summer by the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring just eight times in 22 appearances for Milan.
Sarri, though, believes he is the best proven goalscorer Chelsea could have added this month.
"Higuain usually is able to score 25 or 30 goals every season," he added.
"As I told you before, in the market in January it's very difficult to secure a very important striker.
"Gonzalo was in a situation that we could try to buy him, and so we decided to try for Higuain."
However, Sarri explained that decision was in part forced by Alvaro Morata's desire to leave Chelsea.
The Spaniard cost a then club record £60 million (S$106.6 million) when he signed from Real Madrid in July 2017, but now seems set for a loan move to Atletico Madrid to make way for Higuain.
"I think that Morata is a very good player. I think that Morata has the characteristics for playing in my team," added Sarri.
"But Morata, one month ago, said he wanted to play in another team. So it was really very difficult for him to give us the 100 per cent for his mental situation, I think.
"From the physical and technical point of view, he is a very good player and suitable for my football. But the situation changed in the last month. So we needed to change."

Mission complete for Tottenham

Mission complete for Tottenham

BARCELONA • Mauricio Pochettino hailed his players for achieving "mission impossible" after Tottenham completed an improbable turnaround to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 1-1 draw at Barcelona put the exclamation point on Spurs' European campaign to consign their nightmare start in Group B to distant memory.
Pochettino's men had garnered only a point from their opening three games, but arrived at the Nou Camp knowing that Inter Milan had to better their result to go through.
The Spanish champions had already qualified as group winners and their much-changed line-up gave the away fans hope with Barca coach Ernesto Valverde handing Juan Miranda and Carles Alena their Champions League debuts.
Munir El Haddadi played up front while Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Sergio Busquets all dropped to the bench as Valverde opted to rest his regulars ahead of the Spanish champions' LaLiga trip to Levante on Sunday.
But Spurs' plight looked bleak when Ousmane Dembele's sensational individual strike put them on the back foot in the group decider.
Yet Lucas Moura's late leveller ensured the Premier League club would reach the knockout phase for only the third time in their history. They were indebted, however, to PSV Eindhoven, who held Inter to a surprise 1-1 draw at the San Siro.
After sneaking above the Italian Serie A side due to a better head-to-head record, Pochettino declared it was a "massive motivation" with Spurs' new stadium expected to be ready when the last-16 ties take place in February.

NEVER SAY NEVER
I'm so happy, so proud, I remember that after PSV, no one believed in us, it was mission impossible but we are here, we're in the next round.
MAURICIO POCHETTINO, Tottenham manager, on his team's achievement especially after collecting only a point at the halfway mark of three games.

"I'm so happy, so proud, I remember that after PSV, no one believed in us, it was mission impossible but we are here, we're in the next round," he told reporters.
"It's a massive achievement for the club, we're happy for the fans here and around the world, it's a massive boost for the club, to be able to play in the knockout rounds next year in the new stadium."
The Argentinian admitted that he and his players were caught in two minds over whether to try to hold on for the draw or seek a winner after news filtered through about Mauro Icardi's second-half equaliser for Inter.
Hirving Lozano had opened the scoring for Dutch champions PSV.
"It was difficult to manage the last 10 minutes. The players knew the result of Inter, but it is difficult to translate what to do to the field," he said.
"You have to score to win but, if you concede and lose the game, maybe you talk in a different way afterwards."
The manager also felt progression from a group that had opponents of genuine European pedigree ranked among his greatest achievements since taking over Spurs in 2014.
"It was so difficult to manage everything inside, but we made a fantastic effort. To see and celebrate with everyone after four years and a half was great, it was the first time I felt something really special," he added.
"The connection is amazing, but we need to be clever about how we manage that energy tonight."

Football: Arsenal beat Cardiff on sombre night amid Sala tributes

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette struck second-half goals to earn a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Cardiff City in the Premier League at an emotional Emirates Stadium on Tuesday (Jan 29) .
Aubameyang slotted a 66th-minute penalty past Neil Etheridge after Bruno Manga had fouled Sead Kolasinac.
Unai Emery's side then made their overwhelming territorial superiority count as Lacazette scored a beauty in the 83rd minute, dribbling past Cardiff skipper Sol Bamba before drilling a shot into the corner.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored a late consolation for Cardiff.
The match began in sombre fashion with tributes being made to Cardiff City's Argentine striker Emiliano Sala who has been missing since a plane carrying him to Britain from Nantes last Monday disappeared over the English Channel.
It was Cardiff's first game since Argentine striker Sala, who had not played for the club since joining from Nantes, went missing. Bamba and Arsenal skipper Mesut Ozil both placed bunches of daffodils on the pitch.
Fifth-placed Arsenal's sixth successive home league win lifted them level on 47 points with Chelsea, who play on Wednesday.
Cardiff, who scored for the first time in four league games, remain third from bottom.

Sheikh Khaled sees Newcastle buy as an 'honour'
LONDON • Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is negotiating the £350 million (S$612 million) sale of the Premier League club to Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Khaled bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The news has produced much excitement on Tyneside but, despite reports in the Gulf it is a "done deal", there could still be a considerable distance to be covered.
While Newcastle have privately confirmed talks are continuing, Midhat Kidwai, the managing director of the Bin Zayed Group, which Khaled founded, said on Monday night "terms have been agreed".
He added: "We can confirm that representatives of Sheikh Khaled are in discussions with Mike Ashley and his team about the proposed acquisition of Newcastle.
"We view it as an honour to have the opportunity to build on the strong support, history and tradition of the club.
"We have agreed terms and are working hard to complete the transaction at the earliest opportunity."
A spokesman for the club declined to comment but it appears several hurdles remain and there are also caveats.
Despite living in Dubai, Khaled is a member of Abu Dhabi's royal family, and a cousin of Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour.
It had previously been regarded as unlikely that members of the same ruling family would buy rival football clubs.
Mansour's buyout of City was conducted amid the utmost secrecy and, as a rule of thumb, the takeovers that actually happen tend to be conducted in a similarly clandestine manner, so the leaking of details rings alarm bells.
Moreover any new owner would have to pass the league's owners' and directors' test.
Negotiations may or may not have reached that stage, but the league have adopted Newcastle's public "no comment" stance.
The Magpies' possible switch to Middle Eastern control perhaps explains the impasse over Rafael Benitez's contract extension.
His deal runs on June 30, but he has been in negotiations with Ashley over a new agreement and Khaled is thought to be keen to retain the Spanish manager.
Previous takeover bids by British businesswoman Amanda Staveley and former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon evaporated after entering the due diligence stage.
But regardless of some nagging doubts, Khaled, who is said to have always been a fan of English football and has long harboured ambitions to buy a top-flight club, seems to be being taken much more seriously than most.

No cheer despite James' feat

No cheer despite James' feat

INDIANAPOLIS • Despite becoming the fifth player in National Basketball Association (NBA) history to pass 32,000 points, LeBron James had little cause for celebration on Tuesday.
Not only did the forward suffer the biggest margin of defeat of his NBA career as the Indiana Pacers humbled the Los Angeles Lakers 136-94, but it was also clear for all to see at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse that the Anthony Davis trade rumours had divided the team into two camps - James and everybody else.
Social media was abuzz over TV footage, which captured the 15-time All-Star, who had a team-high 18 points, sitting three chairs apart from the rest of his teammates near the end of the game. To many, it was a symbol of how fractured the Lakers are at the moment.
Reports earlier this week indicated that the team had offered as many as six players in a bid to land New Orleans Pelicans star Davis and, according to ESPN, James and Rajon Rondo have been the "only players whose play hasn't been affected by the talks".
The Pacers, who were paced by 24 points from Bojan Bogdanovic, capitalised on the disharmony by tying their franchise record with 19 three-pointers, while forcing 19 Lakers turnovers, and their fans mercilessly taunted Brandon Ingram when he stepped up to the free-throw line, yelling: "LeBron's going to trade you."
While the forward, who scored 12 points, later claimed it was just white noise, having "been through and heard way worse things in my life", he cryptically referred to the speculation, saying he could "only control what I can control".
James, who had to sit out the Lakers' previous game after returning from a 17-game absence, also felt that the hostile reception was "just fans being fans", saying: "If you let that bother you, you're in the wrong sport."

  • 42
Biggest points margin of defeat LeBron James suffered in the LA Lakers' capitulation to the Indiana Pacers, against whom he also scored his 32,000th point.

However, he conceded to reporters that the gossip had thrown his teammates off their game.
He added: "I know it has to be tough on a lot of our guys, especially our young guys. Right now, they've just never been a part of it and they're hearing it every single day. I know the worst thing you can do right now is to be on social media.
"I know all young guys love social media. That definitely can't help."
Post-game, Lakers coach Luke Walton admitted to website Spectrum SportsNet that the trade rumours "affect everyone differently", before adding: "We know we have to be a lot better.
"There's a million excuses that we can come up with - the travel, the first game coming across the country, everything else. Bottom line is we have to be better."
But, with the Lakers (27-27) now 21/2 games behind the Los Angeles Clippers for the eighth and final play-off spot in the West and three successive road games at the Boston Celtics, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Atlanta Hawks to come, the team could slip even further from contention by next week.
The team are certainly facing an uncertain post-season after the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday that they had informed the Pelicans that they were pulling out of trade talks for Davis.
According to the newspaper, the Lakers had modified their offer to the Pelicans and were willing to trade Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Ingram, Josh Hart, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Ivica Zubac.
In addition, they had agreed to part with two first-round draft picks and to take Solomon Hill and his US$12.7 million (S$17.1 million) contract along with Davis.
However, a source told the Times the Pelicans "wanted more and more and more" and "there was no more to give". The Times and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Pelicans wanted eight draft picks instead - four first-round and four second-round picks. But Wojnarowski hinted the deal could be revived if New Orleans return with a counter-offer.

Football: 'Super difficult' for Neymar to be fit to face Manchester United, says Thomas Tuchel

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel has admitted Neymar is unlikely to be fit in time for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United.
"It's going to be super difficult", Tuchel told Canal+ when asked if Neymar would return from a metatarsal injury in time for the game at Old Trafford on Feb 12.
"It is still too early to talk about a return date because we need to wait and see how 'Ney' reacts to treatment to be more precise," he said after PSG beat Rennes 4-1 at the Parc des Princes.
Tuchel's admission came after newspaper Le Parisien claimed on Sunday evening (Jan 27) that Neymar had suffered "a hairline fracture of the fifth metatarsal", exactly where the Brazilian underwent an operation on a fracture in March last year.
Neymar missed the last three months of last season as a result, including the second leg of PSG's Champions League last-16 defeat against Real Madrid. He only returned just in time for the World Cup.
"I can't confirm a new diagnosis. I think the club has said everything about this injury for the moment and now we need to wait," Tuchel added.
PSG have only said that Neymar had suffered "a painful reactivation of the right fifth metatarsal" in Wednesday's French Cup win against Strasbourg.
Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar is expected to visit the world's most expensive player on Monday.
The second leg of the Manchester United tie is scheduled for March 6.

Football: Deulofeu double seals Watford win at Huddersfield

HUDDERSFIELD, England (REUTERS) - Gerard Deulofeu scored in each half as Watford beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 to clinch their first Premier League away win in four games at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday (April 20).
The visitors opened the scoring inside five minutes after an effort from Abdoulaye Doucoure was blocked by Huddersfield centre back Terence Kongolo inside the area, only for Deulofeu to slot home a curling effort.
The Spanish winger doubled his tally for the afternoon with an identical goal after Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lossl had saved the initial effort from Doucoure.
It was the Deulofeu's ninth league goal of the campaign, continuing his sparkling run of form after his two strikes against Wolverhampton Wanderers put Watford in the FA Cup final.
Relegated Huddersfield struggled to create opportunities for the majority of the game before substitute Karlan Grant headed in a late consolation goal.
Watford boss Javi Gracia was pleased with an all-round display from Deulofeu, who has now scored six goals in his last five away league appearances.
"He's scoring important goals and very good goals," Gracia said.
"All goals are good for me, but in this moment I think Gerard is scoring and he is living an important moment for him and for the team, helping the team with his goals."
The win took Watford provisionally to seventh in the league standings, which could guarantee a Europa League spot should Manchester City beat them in the FA Cup final.
"This week is going to be tough with Southampton and Wolves," former Barcelona winger Deulofeu said.
"We know the FA Cup final is going to be tough against Manchester City but we did 10 months really well and we have to finish in the best way so we'll try to finish seventh."
Grant's fourth league goal of the season made him Huddersfield's top scorer of the campaign as the Terriers moved level with Derby County's lowest Premier League tally of 20 goals in 2007-08.

Portugal had an early goal chalked off when William Carvalho's header was ruled offside and defender Pepe then produced an impressive volley which the 34-year-old Pyatov did well to turn over.
Ronaldo, left out of the Nations Cup matches in the autumn by mutual consent with coach Fernando Santos, then sprang into action as he twice got free on the left.
First he cut inside his marker and produced a snapshot which Pyatov saved with his legs and shortly afterwards he opted to go outside Serhiy Kryvtsov and fired in a low, left-foot shot which the goalkeeper again stopped.
The Ukraine captain saved his best for the 56th minute when he brilliantly turned away Andre Silva's goalbound shot with a one-handed save.
With Bernardo Silva repeatedly dribbling into dead-ends, Portugal began to lose composure as both Joao Cancelo and Ronaldo sent wayward crosses straight into touch.

Portugal then had a let off when Rui Patricio blocked Yevhen Konoplyanka's shot - Ukraine's only effort on target in the match - and debutant Junior Moraes saw his shot from the rebound blocked.
A late chance went begging for Portugal when substitute Rafa Silva missed his kick after a low Ronaldo cross found him in the area.

In his very first season as a professional footballer, the 23-year-old Sports Science graduate from Juntendo University played so well that he was awarded the Player of the Year of the inaugural Singapore Premier League (SPL). The Albirex Niigata midfielder spoke of his ambition to eventually play in the United States, Australia or Canada.

Other than having to integrate a new-look side, Shigetomi also has to contend with new SPL rules which require Albirex to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two playing the entire first half. The club missed out on several targets in the close season, but still managed to sign six local players.

Football: Giroud demands important role at Chelsea next season

LONDON (REUTERS) - Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud said he has been approached by other clubs to play for them next season but wants to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge if manager Maurizio Sarri can offer regular first-team opportunities.
Giroud, who is the top scorer in the Europa League with nine goals, is out of contract at the end of the campaign, although Chelsea have an option to extend it for another 12 months.
The 32-year-old Frenchman has started just seven Premier League games this season and has seen limited opportunities since the arrival of Argentina international striker Gonzalo Higuain in January.
"Trust me I'm very frustrated when I'm not on the pitch, but I just don't want to show it," Giroud told a news conference ahead Chelsea's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Slavia Prague on Thursday.
"You need to keep that frustration for you. And transform that into positive energy on the pitch.
"I'm not happy to play the second role. That's why I said next year I will need to have a more important role to play in the team."
When asked whether he has already had offers to go elsewhere, Giroud added: "Yes but I won't tell you. The priority is Chelsea.
"With what I've achieved here, there is no reason they won't give me one more year. But I need to be happy, also."
Chelsea hold a 1-0 advantage over Slavia from the away leg, courtesy a late headed goal by defender Marcos Alonso.
They will be without defender Antonio Rudiger, who limped out of Sunday's 2-0 league defeat against Liverpool at Anfield with a knee injury.
However, Chelsea's assistant coach Gianfranco Zola expects the German international to return for the league trip to top-four rivals Manchester United on April 28.
"It looks not as bad as we thought, luckily. When he came off limping, we were worried," Zola said.
"Yes, there is a strong possibility that we see him (against United). He's a warrior and won't want to miss a game like that. The next few days will be very important to see if he can continue recovering."

Neville wants his Lionesses to be ruthless

Neville wants his Lionesses to be ruthless

NICE (France) • England coach Phil Neville believes his players have "nothing to fear" after beginning their women's World Cup quest on Sunday with a narrow 2-1 win over Scotland, in which a convincing first half was slightly undermined by a less than ruthless second.
Nikita Parris converted from the spot after a Video Assistant Referee review to give the Lionesses the lead and Ellen White added another before half-time.
While Scotland fought back in the second half, with Claire Emslie reducing the arrears, they could not find an equaliser against one of the tournament's favourites.
Revealing he was "really proud" of his team's efforts, Neville said: "It was good to get that game out of the way. It was always going to be emotional and was really hot. We played really well in the first half... started off playing very adventurously.
"When our legs got heavy in the second half, though, we let fatigue get the better of us. We have to keep driving standards higher and being ruthless but I loved every minute."
Having never been named in a World Cup squad as an England player, Neville was always going to enjoy the moment and had no objections with suggestions that the opening goal was harsh on Scotland.
The new rules allow no scope for a referee's discretion even if the offence lacked intent, with Scotland coach Shelley Kerr admitting, while it was "harsh" that Nicola Docherty was penalised after Fran Kirby's cross had flicked off her partially outstretched arm, that "by the letter of the law, it was a penalty".
Neville also reserved special praise for forward Parris, challenging her to take on even more on-pitch responsibilities as "she is someone with another 10 per cent still left in her".
But he urged the players to raise their game if England are to improve on their third-place finish in the 2015 edition and win their maiden world title.
The former Manchester United defender added: "They're a good set of players with good quality and when I see how they play like they did for the first 60 minutes, we are a good team which will progress in the competition.
"But if we drop our levels it will be tougher. We want to be here for the next 27 days."

The 20-woman squad will be looking to edge a step closer to next year's tournament, with a win on June 8 moving the Lionesses to 16 points and put their destiny in their own hands. Arsenal's Beth Mead keeps her place in the squad, as does Fran Kirby, and Neville expects Russia to focus on England's attacking prowess.

With England taking on Bosnia just four days after the frustrating 0-0 draw with Wales, Phil Neville's message to his side is simple - be ruthless.. The Lionesses registered 29 attempts on goal at St, Mary's, but goalkeeper Laura O'Sullivan had what she described as the game of her life to keep them at bay.

Football: Spurs to trigger Alderweireld contract extension, says Pochettino

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said the club will activate a one-year extension in defender Toby Alderweireld's contract to keep him at the club until 2020.
The move prevents Belgium international Alderweireld, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United by the British media, from leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.
When asked whether Spurs intend to trigger the clause, Pochettino told a news conference: "Yes, for sure, it's obvious. The same situation as Jan (Vertonghen)."
Earlier this month, Spurs extended centre back Vertonghen's contract until 2020.
Alderweireld, who arrived at Spurs in July 2015 from Atletico Madrid, has been a key player for the north London outfit this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.
Having won their last five Premier League games, Spurs have crept up to second spot and are six points behind leaders Liverpool.
But Pochettino said it is still premature to talk of Tottenham as title contenders.
"We are there because we have the belief, because we are working hard and of course we have the quality," he said.
"It is hard to be in the position that we are in. Still we are a question mark. We will see if we are capable during the whole season to be consistent like in the first half of the season. Then we can talk that we can fight for big things."
Spurs said full back Serge Aurier has returned to training after recovering from a groin problem, while midfielder Dele Alli will be assessed ahead of Saturday's league clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Alli missed the 5-0 victory over Bournemouth on Boxing Day, having been substituted during last weekend's 6-2 triumph at Everton over a hamstring concern.
