Football: Man City go top again, with Silva and Aguero goals in 2-0 win over misfiring Fulham
LONDON (REUTERS) - Top-class goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero took Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League in a 2-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday (March 30).
City's seventh successive league victory keeps alive their hopes an unprecedented quadruple of League Cup, Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies this season.
A wayward ball from Fulham's Timothy Fosu-Mensah gifted the visitors the lead in the fifth minute.
Sergio Aguero intercepted the Dutchman's pass just outside the area and passed to Silva, who cut across past two defenders and drove his left-footed shot into the corner past the diving Sergio Rico in goal.
City manager Pep Guardiola told reporters that Silva was playing so well he had made himself a fixture in the lineup.
"The way he is playing, I cannot do anything else but put him on the pitch," he said.
Fulham, who were missing top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic after the international break, kept five men in the back line in a bid to keep City's attack at bay, leading to one-way traffic. In the end, the Cottagers were unable to register a single shot on target all game.
Â
The home side's captain Tom Cairney won a freekick on the corner of the box in a rare break forward in the first half that had the home fans clapping and stamping their feet to rattle the century-old Johnny Haynes Stand.
However, Joe Bryan's cross was a whisker too high for Ryan Babel to head cleanly, and the ball went wide.
City's Silva turned provider in the 27th minute, pouncing onto a loose ball and passing to Aguero, who sprang forward past three defenders and shot from a tight angle up into the opposite corner for his league-leading 19th goal of the season.
Caretaker manager Scott Parker's Fulham have now failed to record a win in 14 games against City in all competitions and have lost the last eight in a row.
The result takes City back to the top of the Premier League on 77 points, one ahead of Liverpool who host Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
"Now it's the last part of the season, seven games left. It's easy: Every game we play we have to win if we want to be champions," Guardiola said.
For Fulham, the outlook is bleak. They remain in 19th place on 17 points, and will now most likely need to win every one of their remaining six matches to have a chance of avoiding relegation.
"We understand the predicament. The main focus now is we push and we end the season on a positive after a difficult campaign," Fulham boss Parker told reporters.
"We have another game on Tuesday and we have to do better. We have six games left and mathematically we're still in it," defender Cyrus Christie said.

LONDON • Pep Guardiola's 100th Premier League game had looked to be a mere formality after Sergio Aguero's opener against Newcastle after only 24 seconds - the quickest Premier League goal this season.
However, his players failed to build on their lightning start as Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Tuesday to put their title defence in jeopardy.
Although Guardiola, who is now facing the hardest challenge of his stewardship, insisted post-game the title race was not over as "there are still many games and anything can happen", there seemed to be a hint of resignation with leaders Liverpool in the box seat.
He said: "We had a chance today to reduce the lead. Tomorrow is a game for our opponents. When you are behind, you have to win games and we couldn't do that."
Denying that the English champions had underestimated Newcastle, he added: "We'd never do that and that's the reason why we're still in four competitions. That's why we recorded 100 points last season.
"It's just sometimes, we don't play at the level we want to play and that can happen, that's something I understand completely."
But after admitting "it was not our best night" with their flat and careless display on Tyneside, talk of an unprecedented quadruple will be on the back-burner for now .
The Spaniard said: "I know the challenge is big, being in all competitions is what it is. If you want to go up as a club, you have to accept that challenge. I prefer to be in that position."
It must have come as a real surprise to him after a sluggish City conceded for the first time since Roberto Firmino netted on Jan 3. It was a series of 30 unanswered strikes before Salomon Rondon's and Matt Ritchie's spot kick on Tuesday.
Guardiola added: "We didn't make a good performance. We didn't take the rhythm of the game, it was slow and we weren't aggressive enough.
"The game was not good. We did not defend the second ball well, we have to improve."
Conceding "next week will be tough" - City have to play Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea in seven days - he challenged his side to rise to the occasion as there were "a lot of titles and points to play for".
The 48-year-old also attempted to put a spin on the upset and their tricky run of upcoming fixtures as they "were still in January", and so, there could be plenty more twists and turns in Liverpool's bid to end a 29-year wait to win the league.
He said: "There's a lot of time but of course, when you're behind the leaders, you don't want to drop points and every game is one less.
"A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
"In our case, we will do our best to be there and not to give up."
With City's unremitting pressing and cutting interplay curiously absent against Rafa Benitez's men, it meant he also missed out on an outright record of achieving most wins in the league era by any manager in their first 100 games.
Instead, he will now share that landmark with his old rival and former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who won 73 of his first 100 games with Chelsea.

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City celebrated their domestic treble with an open-top bus parade on Monday (May 20), drawing an estimated 100,000 fans to the streets of the city centre.
Pep Guardiola's City side became the first to complete a clean sweep of all three major English trophies with Saturday's 6-0 thrashing of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
They clinched a second successive Premier League title the previous week and also won the Carabao Cup in February.
It was the fourth time in seven years the club had taken over the city centre for an afternoon with a celebratory parade. Adding the Community Shield to the tally, the club had banners branding themselves as "The Fourmidables".
The victorious squad were joined by members of the City women's team, who also won an FA Cup and League Cup double this year.
Guardiola insisted he has not thought about next season but admitted captain Vincent Kompany will be missed at the club after the defender confirmed his departure to become player-manager at Anderlecht.
"Zero," the Spaniard said when taking to the stage. "Now is time for good dinners and good wine. We will think about it in one month's time, and enjoy it now.
Â
Â
Â
"I think we will miss Vincent a lot. He is coming back in the future in some way. It is an incredible way to finish the season. He will come out soon and you will see how much we love him." Kompany said he realised the time was right to leave when he scored a stunning winner against Leicester in City's penultimate Premier League match. The victory took City within one more win of the title.
"The moment that ball against Leicester went 'top bins' I knew I was done! I couldn't do anything better. It felt right," Kompany said.
The Belgian now expects the club to go on to even greater success in the future.
"This team is ready to achieve so much more," he said. "I've given everything I could for this club. I can't tell you how proud of that I am. I have nothing left. I have given everything." Organisers said the the crowd for the parade, which culminated with the stage show outside Manchester Cathedral, was estimated to be around 100,000.
Kompany finished his speech by declaring City were the "best club in the world" regardless of European success.
"You are the best club in the world. I do not care if you win the Champions League or not, you are the best club in the world."

City want to co-own team in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR • The owners of Premier League champions Manchester City are eyeing a stake in a Malaysian team to add to their portfolio of clubs, a Malaysian sports official revealed yesterday.
Ferran Soriano, chief executive officer of the City Football Group (CFG), bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour of the Abu Dhabi royal family, raised the possibility when he met Sports Minister Syed Saddiq in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.
CFG already own or have stakes in Major League Soccer outfit New York City, A-League team Melbourne City, J-League side Yokohama F Marinos, Uruguay's Atletico Torque, recently-relegated Spanish team Girona and Chinese side Sichuan Jiuniu, as well as City, who are fresh off winning an unprecedented domestic treble in England.
Ahmad Shapawi Ismai, the director-general of Malaysia's national sports council, revealed to Agence France-Presse that he was "delighted and excited" at the news that CFG "are looking at the possibility of co-owning a Malaysian club as we need (their) expertise".
While Soriano did not reveal the club that the group was interested in buying, Mr Syed said CFG would be meeting some presidents of local clubs soon, and he wanted them to make Malaysia "their base in South-east Asia".
At the meeting, the Spaniard claimed he saw great possibilities in the country, adding: "We see Malaysia has an opportunity for football... the level of enthusiasm of the fans is obvious. The development of Malaysian football and the league in the last year with investment by the government shows there's great opportunity."
Malaysia is the latest Asian country being considered by CFG - in March, Soriano expressed interest in investing in a club from India.

Poor start, then Putri fires Queensway to perfect finish
This was unfamiliar territory for Queensway Secondary School, defending champions and overwhelming favourites for the Schools National B Division girls' football title.
Just six minutes into yesterday's final, the team with five Singapore national players in their starting XI to Bowen Secondary School's none, were already a goal down.
The 2015 champions Queensway had also not conceded this season - over seven games and 490 minutes in the group stage and semi-final.
Led by star midfielder Putri Nur Syaliza, they recovered and relied on their experience and quality to prevail 7-1 at Our Tampines Hub.
Tournament top scorer Putri scored twice to bring her season tally to 27 goals, while striker Dorcas Chu finished her last B Division match with a hat-trick.
Putri, 16, said: "We let in the goal because we weren't warmed up properly and focused yet. We arrived late because there was a traffic jam, so everything was rushed."
That initial disorientation led to Rachel Chan being unmarked in the box and the Bowen striker calmly slotted past goalkeeper Hazel Lim.
The lead lasted only four minutes. Midfielder Atikah Ardini put away a penalty she earned herself. And, 13 minutes later, Putri dribbled into the box and scored despite three defenders closing her down to give Queensway the lead.
Left wing Summer Chong added a third on the stroke of half-time while Dorcas and Putri completed the victory after the break.
Dorcas, 16, was thrilled with her contribution and dedicated her opening goal to teammate Lim Yoke Peng, who missed the final due to injury. She said: "It's my last year in this school so I'm glad I ended it with a bang."
Putri added that her team needed time to get comfortable on the field.
"We were very shaky initially, but we slowly built up our confidence and focused on our tactics," she said.
The score may have been one-sided, but Bowen captain Eva Rushdina, 15, was nevertheless proud of her team's attitude.
"During training, we would work on passing and building up play. We managed to execute that in the final despite not really doing it in the previous matches," said the defender.
"We put in our 100 per cent and, if this is what the scoreline is, then there's nothing much we can do."

Football: Aston Villa meet Derby in play-off battle for 170 million prize
LONDON (REUTERS) - Aston Villa face Derby County in the Championship play-off final on Monday (May 27) with both clubs desperate for a return to the Premier League in a game billed as the richest in world football with at least £170 million (S$297 million) on the line.
Villa have been out of the top flight for three seasons while Derby have been stuck in the second tier of English football since relegation in 2008.
A 10-match winning streak during the run-in propelled Dean Smith's Villa into the playoffs where they got past West Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
"The key thing is momentum," said former Brentford manager Smith, who took over from Steve Bruce at Villa Park in October. "I feel we have a lot of that going into it (the final), given our run towards the end of the season and our two dominant play-off games. We can take it into the final."
Derby produced a brilliant performance with a 4-2 win over Leeds United in their play-off second leg at Elland Road earning them a place at Wembley.
Derby manager Frank Lampard, the former Chelsea and England midfielder who is in his first season as a manager, believes his team are well suited for the high-pressure encounter.
"The 'Cup' football feeling has been good for us. We've had to get results for a while now, going back to probably the QPR game (a 2-0 home win on April 22). We'll need big game mentality on Monday," he said.
Lampard is up against his former club and international team-mate John Terry, who is Smith's assistant at Villa.
The two clubs have proud histories. Seven-time English champions Villa were European Cup winners in 1982, while Derby were twice English champions in the 1970s.
Champions Norwich City and runners-up Sheffield United have already secured promotion to the top flight and the rewards for Villa and Derby joining them are eye-watering.
According to analysis from Deloitte's Sports Business Group, promotion will bring an increase in revenue of at least £170 million, rising to a minimum of £300 million if the play-off winners avoid relegation in their first season.
The £170 million includes £95 million in revenue from playing in the Premier League in 2019-20, mostly from broadcast and commercial revenue, and a total of £75 million in parachute payments in 2020-21 and 2021-22 if they go straight down.
However, the £170 million rises to at least £300 million if they survive their first season in the top flight.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur made a world-record profit of £113 million (S$201.4 million) after tax last year, the English Premier League club reported on Thursday (April 4) - the day after they officially opened their 62,000-seat stadium.
With income rising sharply as a result of player sales, hosting home matches at Wembley and a Champions League run, Tottenham's profit surpassed the £106 million reported by Liverpool earlier this year.
Tottenham became the first Premier League club not to make any signings in the summer transfer window last year and also failed to add to their squad in January.
The club was supposed to move into their new stadium, the cost of which has risen to £1 billion, at the start of the current season but a series of delays meant home matches had to be played at Wembley.
While it was a frustrating wait, the extra capacity at Wembley allowed Tottenham to sell around 340,000 extra tickets, according to chairman Daniel Levy.
Tottenham's income swelled from £310 million to a club-record £380 million, with Premier League match-day revenue rising from £19 million to £42.6 million.
The club's Champions League revenue also grew to £53 million after reaching the last 16 in 2017-18. This season they have reached the quarter-finals and will face Premier League rivals Manchester City this month.
Â
Tottenham, currently third in the table, continued to lag behind their top-six rivals in terms of players' wages, spending £147 million - about half that of Manchester United and £100 million less than Arsenal.
While Tottenham posted record profits, they have borrowed heavily to finance the new stadium with the loan increasing to £537 million compared to the initial £400 million.

Football: France make light work of South Korea in World Cup opener
PARIS (REUTERS) - A rampant France smashed South Korea out of sight on Friday (June 7) to open their women's soccer World Cup campaign in irrepressible style with a 4-0 victory that sent a warning to all other teams with a design on the trophy.
It was one-way traffic all night in a packed 45,000-seater Parc des Princes as the French launched wave after wave of attack at the hapless Koreans, running out easy winners to stamp their authority on Group A of the FIFA extravaganza.
France skipper Amandine Henry controlled the midfield with a firm grip and deft touch, while strikers Eugenie Le Sommer and Delphine Cascarino were constant threats.
From the very first minutes South Korea struggled to get out of their own half and Le Sommer set the tone after nine minutes when she slammed a shot past Korean keeper Kim Min-jung into the roof of the net to send the stadium into raptures.
France had all the play, and thought they had doubled their lead after 27 minutes when Griedge Mbock Bathy slammed a volley home, only for the video assistant referee to rule it out for offside two minutes later.
Wendie Renard made amends after 35 minutes, the powerful central defender thumping a header home for her 21st international goal. She added another headed goal to make it 3-0 on the stroke of halftime of what was rapidly becoming a non-contest.
The Koreans were being outclassed in every department, and trudged off at the break having barely ventured out of their own half.
Korea desperately scrambled to keep the French at bay - just - and with the result in no doubt French coach Corinne Diacre looked to preserve some of her star names for later action, taking Cascarino off in the 70th minute, replacing her with Valerie Gauvin; and replacing Amel Majri with fellow defender Eve Perisset four minutes later.
Just as the Koreans thought they had somehow kept the French at bay for the second period, Henry added to the tally, slamming a right foot shot curling into the Korean net from the edge of the area for 4-0 and a fitting finale.

Spurs need to 'believe'
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that the hamstring injury which forced Dele Alli out of Tottenham's 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday "did not look great" as he faced up to the loss of yet another key attacking player.
Spurs play Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final, second leg at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
Pochettino is already resigned to being without Harry Kane, who has an ankle ligament injury, and Son Heung-min, who is on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup.
Lucas Moura, who missed the Fulham game because of knee trouble, should return at Chelsea, but Moussa Sissoko (groin) and Victor Wanyama (knee) are out while the Spurs manager now faces an anxious wait over Alli.
The Argentinian manager has already made it clear that he does not consider a move in the January transfer market as a solution to what seems like a selection crisis.
"We need to assess Dele in the next few days, but the hamstring is a muscle that you need to be careful with - in terms of the mechanism of the injury," he said.
"We need to assess but, of course, it does not look great. On the pitch, I think we all agree that when you see him put his hand on his hamstring, it's not great to see that."
Pochettino, who did welcome back Eric Dier as a substitute after appendix surgery, added that the long injury list gives other members in his squad the chance to step up.
"It's not a worry, it's a massive opportunity for different players," he said. "We're going to go to Chelsea expecting to win. The most important thing is to believe."
In the absence of Kane and Son - who have scored 22 league goals between them this season - Tottenham found an unlikely match winner in Harry Winks on Sunday.
The England midfielder had not scored for the club since November 2016, but he struck seconds before the final whistle to seal a 2-1 victory at Craven Cottage.
It was also the first time since March 2014 that Spurs have won a league game without Kane or Son.
Kane's replacement, Fernando Llorente, had endured a tough afternoon. He scored a 14th-minute own goal and then wasted two gilt-edged chances. Alli then netted the equaliser before he went off.
The win meant that Tottenham moved to within nine points of leaders Liverpool and five behind Manchester City, but also gave them breathing space over Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the battle for a top-four finish.
"It was an unbelievable finish. That's why it is so important to believe," added Pochettino, whose side have won 11 of 13 matches on the road in the league this season.

United's massive 'rebuilding job'
United's massive 'rebuilding job'
BARCELONA • After their remote hopes of another improbable Champions League revival were stopped dead by Lionel Messi and a rampant Barcelona, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United side have to undergo a huge overhaul to return to Europe's elite.
United tried in vain to summon up the spirit of 1999 at the same Nou Camp where they stunned Bayern Munich with a 2-1 comeback win in the Champions League final.
While they started the second leg of their quarter-final brightly, with Marcus Rashford hitting the bar, a pair of mistakes gave Messi the chance to put the Red Devils away.
Ashley Young, playing as left-back in place of the suspended Luke Shaw, gave the ball away for the first while David de Gea, United's player of the year four times in the past five years, let a tame effort slip under his hands.
Just like that, their hosts were out of sight 3-0 on Tuesday and 4-0 on aggregate, the first time United have lost by four or more goals in a two-legged European knockout tie.
Solskjaer said he knew all along "there is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at".
The Norwegian added: "We were fighting against a great team... but I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight.
"We've good players to work with and, at the moment, we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four (in the Premier League). But we've got a rebuilding job. It starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions (in the summer).
"We're on with the job and have spoken to the players we need to get the best out of each other, create an environment of top-class attitude, world-class attitude every single day."
While he has restored United's confidence, which hit rock-bottom under Jose Mourinho, and has overseen an improvement in results in the four months since taking the job in December, the scale of the long-term surgery his side need was laid bare in Spain.
Barcelona, led by a brace from Messi and a fine curling strike from Philippe Coutinho, were dominant, with Solskjaer conceding he "could see the difference between the two teams".
His reasoning cut little ice with former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, though, who felt that United's lack of character was apparent, with "no one performing to a standard anywhere near good enough to take on Barcelona".
But, while the pundit also reserved criticism for Paul Pogba for "playing his own kind of game", former United star Paul Scholes feels the France midfielder remains a player Solskjaer should retain and build his side around.
Meanwhile, United said yesterday they are investigating racist abuse directed at defender Young on social media after the loss to Barcelona.
The England international was targeted on Twitter after the 33-year-old full-back endured a disappointing night at the Nou Camp.
"Manchester United utterly condemns racist social media comments posted around yesterday's Champions League fixture," the club said in a statement.
"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them."

START FROM SCRATCH
There is work to be done and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level that Barcelona and other teams are at.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, on the scale of the job at hand.

Salah's out but Reds not giving up
Salah's out but Reds not giving up
LONDON • The talk after last week's 3-0 Champions League humbling by Barcelona is that should Liverpool manage to claw back the deficit today, it would rival 2005's "Miracle of Istanbul".
However, after Jurgen Klopp revealed that top scorer Mohamed Salah will miss the second leg of their semi-final tie, it would "be the greatest comeback of them all, no question" if the Reds reach their second straight final.
The Liverpool boss dropped the bombshell at his pre-match press conference yesterday, confirming the Egypt forward, who has 26 goals in all competitions this season, had failed to recover from his head knock suffered in their 3-2 Premier League victory at Newcastle on Saturday.
Klopp said: "It's a concussion so that means he would not even be allowed to play. So that's it.
"He feels okay, but it is not good enough from a medical point of view, that is all. He's desperate (to play) everything, but we cannot do it."
The loss of another member of his "Fab Three" - Brazil forward Roberto Firmino, who has 16 goals for the term and was ruled out earlier - represents a hammer blow to Liverpool's hopes of a second consecutive European Cup final.
However, while Klopp admitted "it doesn't make life easier", he will not be waving the white flag and field a weakened side, with his team in contention to end a 29-year English league title drought ahead of the final round of Premier League matches this Sunday.
The German said: "Two of the world's best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals against Barca to go through after 90 minutes.
"But, as long as we have 11 players on the pitch, we will try it."
Liverpool have a rich history of stunning comebacks in European football, most famously lifting the Champions League trophy in 2005 after trailing 3-0 to AC Milan at half-time of the final.
But the 51-year-old is fully aware of the difficulty of not just scoring at least three against the Spanish champions - only two teams in the competition's history, Roma last year and Deportivo La Coruna in 2004, have overhauled a three-goal advantage after the first leg.
Liverpool must also prevent players like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez from scoring as that would leave them needing at least five goals to progress.
Klopp added: "I imagine the place will be rocking even before we score to be honest, but we not only have to score, we also have to deny Barcelona from scoring.
"It doesn't happen too often that Barcelona don't score at all. We know how big the challenge is. This team are so wonderful we will try 100 per cent, but that doesn't mean it will all work out."
However, with Wolves visiting this Sunday, Klopp did concede "we have to make a lot of decisions".
He said: "Tomorrow night will be the third game in six days and Barcelona changed 11 positions on Saturday, so that is a massive difference as well of course.
Â
Â
"Together with our supporters, it was a long season and there is at least a little chance to make it even longer.
"But, if not, these are the last two home games of an incredible season and we should celebrate that with a good performance on the pitch and a very, very good performance in the stands."
Reds great Kenny Dalglish believes Klopp's men can pull off the unthinkable as "the backing from the home support will drive the players on".
Highlighting "the key to it all is getting the first goal", the former Liverpool manager told Scottish daily The Sunday Post: "Of course, it's hard to see any team scoring four against Barca to get through.
"But I do think the tie is still open, and there remains a glimmer of hope. It would be foolish to say the tie is over.
"Ideally, you score in the opening 15 minutes and put real doubt in the minds of the Barcelona players. If that happens, then I wouldn't rule anything out."

Football: Saudi Arabia show title credentials with 4-0 win over 10-man North Korea in Asian Cup opener
DUBAI (AFP) - Three-time winners Saudi Arabia laid down a marker as they ruthlessly dismissed 10-man North Korea at the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The Saudis, humbled at last year's World Cup in Russia, looked far more at home in neighbouring United Arab Emirates as they tore North Korea apart 4-0 in their opening Group E game.
It was a performance that tagged Saudi Arabia as one of the teams to beat at the continental showpiece along with Iran, who thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
The Green Falcons attacked relentlessly in the opening stages and Hatan Bahbri put them in front in the 28th minute, turning defender Ri Il Jin inside out and firing into the far corner.
They were 2-0 up nine minutes later when Hussain Almoqahwi's free kick glanced off the outstretched boot of Mohammed Al Fatil and past Ri Myong Guk in the North Korean goal.
North Korea already had a mountain to climb, but their plight worsened just before half-time when Han Kwang Song received his second yellow card for bringing down Almoqahwi.
Salem Al Dawsari made it 3-0 with a smart finish on 69 minutes before Fahad Al Muwallad bagged a soft fourth goal against an exhausted Korean defence three minutes from time.

Football: Newcastle get extra-time win over Blackburn, Stoke fall to Shrewsbury in FA Cup 3rd-round replays
LONDON (REUTERS) - Newcastle beat Blackburn Rovers 4-2 after extra time, while Championship side Stoke City threw away a two-goal lead as they suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat by third-tier Shrewsbury Town in English FA Cup third-round replays on Tuesday (Jan 15).
Newcastle fans, who had seen their side narrowly escape defeat in the home match with Championship team Blackburn, were given some respite from their top-flight struggles with a replay win against their fellow six-time FA Cup winners at Ewood Park.
Rafa Benitez's much-changed side with a youthful streak had looked set to coast through when Sean Longstaff's deflected shot put them ahead after 56 seconds and Callum Roberts volleyed home a second four years since his only other Newcastle appearance.
But Blackburn hit back through Adam Armstrong, a former Newcastle player and lifelong fan of the Magpies, and Darragh Lenihan's header before half-time.
When the tie went into extra time, Bradley Dack missed a great chance to put Blackburn ahead before goals from Joselu, who should have been ruled offside, and Ayoze Perez earned Newcastle a home tie with fellow top-flight side Watford.
Benitez praised his team's commitment but was left counting the cost of the victory with defenders Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles suffering injuries.
There appeared no hope that Shrewsbury, 18th in League One, would follow the third-round giant-killings that had been dished out by Newport County, Oldham Athletic and Barnet, but against the odds they were the latest underdogs to snarl.
Tyrese Campbell, son of former Everton striker Kevin, scored twice in the first half for second-tier Stoke but three goals in the last 20 minutes for the Shrews served up another surprise.
James Bolton's 20m strike began the fightback in the 71st minute before a penalty from Fejiri Okenabirhie and an 81st-minute shot from Josh Laurent completed the fightback.
It earned Shrewsbury a glamour fourth-round home tie with their neighbours, Premier League outfit Wolves.
In Tuesday's other replay, struggling Championship team Sheffield Wednesday came through another tough test at in-form third-tier side Luton Town, winning 1-0 with an Atdhe Nuhiu goal straight after the interval.
The Owls' reward is a fourth-round trip to Premier League giants Chelsea.

It was the inauspicious anniversary. Tuesday marked a year to the day since Alexis Sanchez swopped Arsenal for Manchester United and when his current club, desperately trying to be ubiquitous on social media, tweeted about it, the Gunners deluged them with mocking replies. As Sanchez makes his first return to the Emirates Stadium, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinting a man displaced from the Premier League side will be granted just his second start for him, it is a move that benefited no one - except, perhaps, Manchester City who sense missing out on the Chilean amounted to a lucky escape.

Football: 'Massive relief' for Klopp as Liverpool edge past Palace
Football: 'Massive relief' for Klopp as Liverpool edge past Palace
LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he felt "massive relief" after Mohamed Salah's double helped his side go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League following a thrilling 4-3 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday (Jan 19).
Salah is the league's top scorer with 16 after goals at Anfield that contained huge slices of luck, with Liverpool having to overcome a determined Palace team in a rollercoaster encounter.
Liverpool will happily accept goals of all types as they look to win the league title for the first time in 29 years and this result again heaped pressure on second-placed Manchester City, who face Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
"It's a massive relief. We knew for different reasons the game would be difficult," Klopp said afterwards.
"Crystal Palace traditionally do well against Liverpool and with the physicality it was clear it would be like the first half was.
"We had to stay positive, being one down is not a massive blow, we just needed to win the second half and did what we had to do."
Palace were the last team to beat Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League back in April 2017 and the south London club looked on course to repeat that feat when Andros Townsend gave the visitors a well-worked lead after 34 minutes.
Â
Liverpool came flying out of the blocks after the break though as Salah and Roberto Firmino helped the Reds hit back within eight minutes of the re-start.
Salah's opener for Liverpool came courtesy of a Virgil van Dijk shot that took a huge deflection off James McArthur and fell perfectly to him three yards out before Firmino curled into Julian Speroni's far corner.
'DIFFERENT WAYS TO WIN'
However the match was only just getting started. James Tomkins headed Palace level with 25 minutes remaining before Salah scored another freakish goal, bundling home from less than yard out after Speroni - the Premier League's oldest player - fumbled a soft James Milner cross and gifted the ball to the Egyptian.
Palace were helped when Milner was sent off for a second bookable offence following a sloppy tackle on Wilfried Zaha a minute before the end of normal time, but Sadio Mane scored four minutes later to give Liverpool a 4-2 lead that finished the Londoners despite Max Meyer sweeping past Becker in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
One of the defining characteristics of Liverpool under Klopp's side is the way they can win in contrasting fashions, be it Saturday's seven-goal thriller or last week's efficient 1-0 success at Brighton.
"There are different ways to win football games and today we had to dig in to do that," Klopp said.
"I'm really happy. The result is massive, we have 60 points now it's crazy, it's an important number."
Salah's double meant the Egypt forward had now scored 50 Premier League goals in just 72 appearances.
"It's an exceptional achievement from a world-class player," said Klopp.
"It's a classical win-win situation because he benefits from our style of play and the other boys benefit from him scoring goals."
'WICKED CRUELTY'
Palace boss Roy Hodgson, who managed Liverpool for a tumultuous period between July 2010 and January 2011 and is not fondly remembered on Merseyside, was left to reflect on his side's bad luck.
"I thought it was a really good performance," Hodgson said.
"To find yourself 2-1 down to a 45-yard shot that was deflected and then a deflected shot was unfortunate.
"To come back to 2-2 was commendable. The third goal, the cruelty of football shows itself at its most wicked."
As for Liverpool's title chances, the ex-England manager added: "Liverpool have the wherewithal and the margin of points at the top. That is a good place to be.
"I am pretty sure that Jurgen Klopp and his staff and players realise there is a long way to go."
Man City fans fear another nightmare after shock change for Liverpool clash Man City fans have been left scratching their heads as Pep Guardiola has named an interesting starting XI for what could prove to be the most important game of the season for his team.

If the fans are found guilty of behaviour "that insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion or ethnic origin", the minimum sanction to which Chelsea would be subjected is the partial closure of Stamford Bridge at a Europa League game. The report will be submitted in mid-January.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said last week that a decision is expected by March ahead of the draw for qualifying matches. The study is expected to include aspects of scheduling, the number of required venues, training sites, and how many games per day would be played under an expanded format.
