Kop-a-hoop

LONDON • Unbelievable, unforgettable, unyielding. For many years to come, Liverpool fans will recall with pride what their passionate, inspired team did on Tuesday night.
They overturned the odds, they overwhelmed Lionel Messi, they overcame Barcelona. They made history. They reached the Champions League final for the second straight year.
This was supposedly mission impossible, but Liverpool believed and so Anfield celebrated the greatest night in its long, glorious European history.
It was classic red fury from the Jurgen Klopp heavy metal playbook.
When they come out and play like this, there is something brilliantly reckless about them. Wherever this team go from here, whatever they end up winning, you suspect moments like these will remain the fondest memories.
There was so much to savour for the Reds faithful - the doubles of Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum, the tireless running of Trent Alexander-Arnold, the leadership of skipper Jordan Henderson, the unending work of Sadio Mane and the five huge saves of Alisson.
On European nights, Liverpool seem to do the most extraordinary things of all.
Klopp had used his pre-match programme notes to pay tribute to his "monsters" for the way his side had kept fighting throughout the season, taking the Premier League title race to the final day.
Yet coming into the reverse fixture of their semi-final and three goals down with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita missing, it appeared to have been a campaign when they seemed to have won everything - points and admiration - but no trophies.
Instead, a season of oh-so-close moments may just have become one of the most remarkable of all after a 4-0 crushing of Barcelona that reportedly left Messi inconsolable in the dressing room.
Liverpool will travel to the June 1 final in Madrid as the favourites to lift their sixth European Cup. Despite Klopp's record in major finals - he won his first and has lost the next six - few will bet against him.
Hailing his players as "mentality giants", the German said: "I know what everybody says about me and losing finals, that's alright.

ALWAYS ALERT
It was just instinctive. It was just one of those moments where you see the opportunity and obviously Div (Origi) was switched on to finish it off.
TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD, on the corner kick routine that caught out Barcelona for the winner.

ALWAYS TRYING
If only winners have the right to exist, we can pack it all to one spot and stop trying. Life for me is trying and trying over and over again - and having fun and feeling passion while trying.
JURGEN KLOPP, on his losing record in finals.

"But it's the fourth final that we are in and that's pretty special already. Last year, we really felt we have to go back (after the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in Kiev), we have to go back we can't let it stand like this.
"With any other team, I wouldn't think it (the comeback) was possible. Putting in a performance like this on the pitch is unbelievable.
"I am really proud to be the manager of this team. What they did tonight was really special. I will remember it forever. We know this club is the mix of atmosphere, emotion, desire and football quality."
Henderson also revealed Klopp's team talk prediction of "a special night to tell their grandchildren about" had galvanised the players, adding: "The players could see that the manager believed, which helped us believe in what he said.
"No matter what happens, you keep fighting right until the final whistle goes. We will continue to do that on Sunday and in the final as well. Two big games to look forward to, we just have to keep that spirit and then we will be OK."

Football: Atletico earn comfortable win at struggling Huesca

HUESCA (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid eased the pain of their midweek Copa del Rey exit to Girona by strolling to a 3-0 win at basement club Huesca on Saturday (Jan 19), moving to within two points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
France defender Lucas Hernandez scored in his first league appearance for over a month, and the first since reports of a possible move to Bayern Munich appeared, to put Atletico ahead in thick fog at Huesca's El Alcoraz stadium in the 31st minute.
Bottom-of-the-table Huesca had come close to opening the scoring when Jorge Pulido struck the post with a bicycle kick. However, Atletico tightened their grip on the game early in the second half as Colombian right back Santiago Arias volleyed in a chipped pass from Antoine Griezmann.
Griezmann came close to netting for the seventh game in a row when he headed against the crossbar, but his team mate Koke pounced on the rebound to match the 3-0 scoreline Atletico won by when the two teams met earlier in the season.
Atletico are second in the standings on 41 points, two behind leaders Barcelona who host Leganes on Sunday.

Football: Guardiola advises Everton to be patient with Silva ahead of City's visit to Goodison Park

(REUTERS) - Everton must stick with under-fire manager Marco Silva if they believe in his ability as there are no guarantees that a new manager can come in and improve results immediately, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said.
Everton invested heavily on new players in the close season but results have hardly matched expectations, with Silva's side managing just three wins in their last 12 English Premier League games to heap pressure on the Portuguese.
"My advice... if they believe in the project, if they believe in him, they have to move forward with him," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Wednesday's (Feb 6) trip to Goodison Park.
"Nobody assures you a new manager is going to do better."
The Spaniard did not enjoy success at City until his second campaign, when he won the league title and the League Cup last season and stressed the need for clubs like Everton to keep faith in their managers.
"It's difficult to create, to build something. You need time, it takes time. So it depends if they trust (Silva) or not," he added.
"The people don't know how difficult it is to create teams. People believe 'I buy three or four players, a new manager, and everything fits perfectly'. Sometimes it takes time."

City are second in the table with 59 points from 25 games, seven places above Everton, who have 33 points.

Pep Guardiola claimed he still doesn't believe Manchester City can win the quadruple after his side reached the FA Cup final with a 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday. Guardiola's men were well below their best in the Wembley semi-final, but Gabriel Jesus's early goal got the job done.

Football: Milan draw another blank in Frosinone stalemate as pressure piles on Gattuso

MILAN (REUTERS) - AC Milan completed four Serie A games without scoring for the first time since 1984 when they were held 0-0 at next-to-bottom Frosinone on Wednesday (Dec 26).
As speculation mounted about his future, beleaguered Milan coach Gennaro Gattuso admitted his side were "dreadful" in the first half against the team with Serie A's worst defensive record.
"We handed it to our opponents: we were not on the field, we lost all the 50-50 balls. We knew it would be difficult and we could easily have lost it," said Gattuso, whose side have not scored for 379 minutes.
"We played a dreadful first half. I cannot accept a performance like that. We can't play like that if we want to qualify for the Champions League," he added.
Samu Castillejo hit the post for Milan while Frosinone, who have shipped 36 goals in 18 games, had a goal disallowed before half time.
Camillo Ciano volleyed home from Raffaele Maiello's pass but, following a Video Assistant Referee review, the referee ruled that Maiello had fouled Hakan Calhangolu as he won the ball in midfield.
In an end-to-end finale, Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain fired over the bar from 12 metres in stoppage time from Calhanoglu's inviting pass as he completed his ninth game without scoring.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma came to Milan's rescue with an excellent save from Ciano's low drive.
Milan stayed fifth with 28 points, outside the Champions League places, and are in danger of being engulfed by a pack of teams just below them.
The last time Milan went four league games against scoring was under coach Nils Liedholm in 1984-85 when their rivals were Torino, Avellino, Hellas Verona and Sampdoria.
"We need to score goals and we weren't precise enough. We missed all the chances that came our way," Gattuso said.

The result, and another lacklustre performance, against the team with Serie A's worst defensive record heaped more pressure on Milan's beleaguered coach Gennaro Gattuso. Italian media reported

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions hope to continue winning momentum against Home United

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Young Lions hope to continue winning momentum against Home United

SINGAPORE - They had a taste of blood, and now the Young Lions want more.
Tipped by many to struggle in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season, Fandi Ahmad's charges pulled off a massive upset last week when they beat a Hougang United team boasting several senior national players 2-1.
The young guns, lying seventh in the nine-team table, are hoping to build on the victory when they take on sixth-placed and SPL pre-season title hopefuls Home United on Saturday (April 6) at the Bishan Stadium.
Striker Saifullah Akbar, who scored the winning goal against Hougang, said he and many of his teammates benefited from a three-week overseas stint with the national Under-22 team, also coached by Fandi.
Fifteen Young Lions players were among the 24-strong U-22 squad that went on a two-week training camp in Shizuoka, Japan, before playing qualification matches in Mongolia for next year's AFC Under-23 Championship.
Singapore failed to progress to next year's finals after finishing second in their group. They had drawn 1-1 with Hong Kong and North Korea and beaten Mongolia 3-1.
Saifullah, 20, said: "In Japan and Mongolia, we played against opponents who were physically, tactically and technically stronger.

"Doing well on both trips gave us the belief we could match the top SPL teams when we returned here. And that has been key - belief."
Young Lions skipper Joshua Pereira added: "In Japan, we had double training sessions every day, and did not have outside distractions we have back in Singapore like school, work or National Service.
"The win against Hougang felt exceptional, but we know we have to keep our feet on the ground and try to do it again in our next game against Home."
Fandi, 56, refused to get carried away by the win over Hougang - in pre-season, he had simply targeted avoiding the wooden spoon - but added that he was pleased with the competition among his players.
He said: "Everyone wants a place in the team, and everyone's fighting for it.
"The SEA Games (in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11) is the next big target and the players are all eager to prove themselves."
Despite his team's fine form, Fandi said they will start today's match as the underdogs.
Home have kept three straight clean sheets and also defeated Laotian champions Lao Toyota 1-0 in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
But Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is fretting over his attack.
Last season's 13-goal forward Shahril Ishak and Australian midfielder Isaka Cernak are sidelined with ankle injuries while South Korean midfielder Song Ui-yong, with 10 goals last campaign, is struggling with a groin problem.
Saswadimata said he was impressed by the Young Lions, noting: "They were very disciplined and very organised, both defensively and going forward.
"They are young, but they compensate by working really hard for each other and being organised.
"We will find it tough to break the Young Lions down."

Football: Sterling hits hat-trick as England thrash Czech Republic

LONDON (AFP) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as England started what they hope is a road back to Wembley for the Euro 2020 final with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the Czech Republic to open their qualifying campaign.
Harry Kane was also on target from the penalty spot as England carried the momentum from a run to the World Cup semi-finals and qualification for the last four of the Nations League into the Euro qualifiers.
England have stormed to the top of qualifying Group A ahead of Monday's trip to Montenegro, who drew 1-1 at Bulgaria.
Jadon Sancho is one of the new additions to Gareth Southgate's squad since that revival for the Three Lions in Russia and was handed his first competitive international start.
The 18-year-old, who has shone in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund this season, gave England fans further cause for excitement, with his potential added to that of Sterling and Kane coming into their prime.
Sterling had scored just two goals in his first 45 caps, but the Manchester City winger now has five in his last three England games as he begins to come of age on the international stage.

Comfortable England

After a lacklustre start in which the hosts dominated possession without threatening much, one move of genuine quality opened the scoring on 23 minutes and the way to a comfortable night for Southgate's men.

Kane showed his ability is not restricted to finding the net with a wonderful pass inside Filip Novak to free Sancho, who squared for Sterling to tap home on the stretch.
Another burst of inspiration from Sterling made the game safe in first-half stoppage time.
He wriggled around four Czech defenders before a combination of Pavel Kaderabek and Tomas Kalas hauled him down.
Kane maintained his flawless record from the spot for England and scored his 21st international goal, firing his powerful penalty past Jiri Pavlenka despite the Czech stopper getting a hand to it.
The Czechs already had bad memories of Wembley as the scene where they lost the Euro 96 final to Germany in extra-time before this mauling.
Gone are the days where they are contenders to win the Euros, but Jaroslav Silhavy's side did at least spark briefly into life after the break.
Tomas Soucek headed inches wide and David Pavelka forced Jordan Pickford into two routine saves before England went through the gears to give the scoreline a fairer reflection of the gulf between the sides.
Sancho should have scored his first international goal after more good work from Sterling and Kane, but could not force the ball past a desperate challenge from Novak, and Sterling showed Sancho how it is done with a fine curling finish into the top corner just after the hour mark.
However, England's hat-trick hero had luck on his side for his third goal as a huge deflection left Pavlenka in the Czech goal flummoxed.
That was Sterling's final act as he made way for another precociously talented 18-year-old, Callum Hudson-Odoi, to make his international debut, while Declan Rice was also handed his England debut after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland.
And Hudson-Odoi had a big part to play in England's fifth as his shot was parried by Pavlenka into the onrushing Kalas, who haplessly turned the ball into his own net.

Football: Martial signs new long-term deal at Manchester United

LONDON (AFP) - Anthony Martial has signed a new contract that will keep him at Manchester United until June 2024 just months after he seemed set to leave, the Premier League club announced on Thursday (Jan 31).
The 23-year-old Frenchman, who moved to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2015, has scored eight Premier League goals this season.
"I am loving my time at this club," said Martial, whose new deal includes the option to extend for a further year.
"From the day I joined I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support.
"I would like to thank (interim boss) Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level. This club is all about winning trophies and I am sure the next piece of silverware is not that far away."
Martial signed from Monaco for an initial £36 million ($47 million) and became the most expensive teenager in the world but until recently it appeared a matter of when rather than if he would leave Old Trafford.
The forward's agent Philippe Lamboley indicated in June that his client wanted to seek a new challenge and former boss Jose Mourinho was reportedly willing to sell him, although executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward made clear he wanted to keep the player.
Martial was fined by Mourinho after failing to return to the club's pre-season tour of the United States following the birth of his second child and was on the fringes of the side in the early weeks of the campaign.
But the Frenchman has been an integral part of the side since Solskjaer replaced the sacked Mourinho in December.
"Anthony is one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with," said the Norwegian interim boss.
"For a young man, he has a good footballing brain which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him." While Martial commits his future to the club, Marouane Fellaini is reportedly set to end his five-and-a-half year stay at Old Trafford, with United understood to have reached an agreement in principle regarding his sale to Chinese club Shandong.
It is understood that the Belgium international has already passed a medical, leaving paperwork and final terms to iron out.
Fellaini posted an Instagram photo of himself at an airport on Thursday, with the phrase "let's go" written across it.

Football: Man City crush Watford 6-0 to complete treble in style

LONDON (REUTERS) - Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City crushed Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday (May 18) to become the first team to win the English treble of league championship and both domestic cups in spectacular style.
The victory matched the competition's record final win - set when Bury beat Derby County 116 years ago - and was a fair reflection of yet another command performance by one of the best teams in the history of the English game.
Coming after they retained the Premier League title last week and won the League Cup in a penalty shootout over Chelsea, City's sixth FA Cup triumph made them the eighth team to win the prized League and FA Cup double and first since Chelsea in 2010.
"It was an incredible final for us and we have finished an incredible year," City manager Pep Guardiola told the BBC.
"To all the people at the club a big congratulations, especially the players because they are the reason why we have won these titles."
City led 2-0 at halftime through David Silva and Sterling and effectively sealed the deal when Kevin de Bruyne came off the bench to smash in the third after 61 minutes.
Gabriel Jesus slotted the fourth before Sterling, who was brought up in Wembley, took centre stage with two more in the last 10 minutes to becoming the first player to score an FA Cup final hat-trick since Stan Mortensen in 1953 when Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3 in the "Matthews Final".

"I grew up here and saw this stadium get built. It's a massive dream come true to win trophies here," Sterling said.
"It shows what the manager is building here. He said we needed to get the mentality right and we did that and did it exceptionally well.
"It's been a long season with the World Cup as well but everyone has been on their A-game and come through."
Other than one early chance for Roberto Pereyra Watford never looked remotely capable of ending their 30-year winless run against City in their second appearance in the final having lost to Everton in 1984.

LONG SHOT

It always looked a long shot for them to deliver a classic Cup upset. City had beaten Watford in the teams' last 10 meetings, scoring 32 goals in the process and conceding six while Watford's last win in the fixture came in 1989 in the old Second Division.
The underdogs did have the first clear chance after 11 minutes when Gerard Deulofeu broke and set up Pereyra on the edge of the box but Ederson flew off his line to save with his foot.
Other than that, they spent most of the first half camped deep in their own half and there was an air of inevitability when City struck after 26 minutes as diminutive duo Silva and Sterling won headers against big Watford defenders, allowing Silva to seize on the loose ball and fire past Heurelho Gomes.
They doubled the lead in the 38th minute when Bernardo Silva chipped a perfectly-weighted diagonal ball beyond the flailing Gomes for Jesus, starting ahead of Sergio Aguero, to steer back goalwards and almost over the line before Sterling lashed it into the net.
Watford had trailed Wolves 2-0 in the semi-final before coming back to win 3-2 in extra-time and though they started the second half with more attacking intent, hope was extinguished when City broke at pace, Sterling rolling the ball to De Bruyne who throw Gomes with a dummy before drilling the ball low into the net.
Watford, too late, threw men forward and were exposed when Jesus broke from his own half to tuck the ball under Gomes to make it 4-0 and Bernardo Silva was the provider again as Sterling arrived at the back post to smash in the fifth.
Local boy Sterling fittingly finished things off with his third three minutes from time.
It was a good result for Wolverhampton Wanderers too as they will now qualify for the Europa league via their seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Football: Tottenham climb to third, Cardiff near drop

MANCHESTER (REUTERS) - Lucas Moura's first Premer League hat-trick helped Tottenham Hotspur climb above Chelsea into third after a 4-0 victory over bottom side Huddersfield Town on Saturday (April 13).
With Chelsea not in action until Sunday when they take on title-chasing Liverpool, Spurs cruised past the already-relegated Yorkshire side at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to move on to 67 points, one ahead of Maurizio Sarri's side.
Spurs also forged four points clear of their neighbours Arsenal, who travel to Watford on Monday.
Two Paul Pogba penalties earned a lethargic Manchester United a 2-1 victory over West Ham United and lifted them above Arsenal into fifth place.
"They played better than us, it is fair to say, I don't think anyone will disagree," United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after his side secured only a second win in their last six matches in all competitions.
"We got away with it, sometimes we have lost when we should have won, so over a season it evens itself out."
At the other end of the table, Cardiff City edged closer to the drop with a 2-0 defeat at Burnley, while Brighton & Hove Albion's third successive league defeat, a humiliating 5-0 home loss to Bournemouth, heightened their relegation fears.
In the absence of the injured Harry Kane and the rested Son Heung-min, though, Spurs still made it three wins out of three at their inspiring new home, Victor Wanyama's early goal being followed by Lucas's treble, which featured two late strikes.
The victory was an important one for Tottenham, who face a daunting trip to league leaders Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday, before the same fixture takes place in the Premier League next weekend.

"After the game when Harry got injured everyone believed Sonny was going to step up and is going to be the man, but we have seen today Lucas got a hat-trick and it was an unbelievable afternoon for him," Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino said.
"It is going to help and bring him confidence. We have ahead a very tough period, two games against Manchester City and then Brighton."

CARDIFF EDGE CLOSER TO DROP

Five points from safety, Cardiff travelled to fellow relegation candidates Burnley knowing they need to start picking up points with time running out this season, but they found themselves behind just after the half-hour mark.
Chris Wood's close-range header did the damage, with the New Zealand international making sure of the win in stoppage time, inflicting a third successive defeat on Cardiff, who have just five games left to avoid the drop.
Brighton are anything but safe in 17th after slipping to a third successive defeat of their own, with Bournemouth's comprehensive victory moving them onto 41 points with safety in sight.
Brighton and Cardiff meet on Tuesday at the Amex Stadium, where victory for Brighton would leave them eight points clear of the effectively doomed Welsh club.
Elsewhere, 16th-placed Southampton also moved one step closer to survival with a 3-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, while relegated Fulham secured just their fifth league win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Everton. Sunday's action kicks off with second-placed Manchester City facing a tough trip to Crystal Palace - one of the few sides to have beaten Pep Guardiola's men this season.

Solskjaer stays upbeat despite United wobble

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Manchester United were the architects of their "own downfall" after they were beaten by Wolves for the second time in three weeks.
Tuesday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux in which Ashley Young was sent off for two bookable offences means United have little margin for error if they are to finish in the top four.
Scott McTominay gave the away side an early lead - his first for the club - but Diogo Jota equalised after a mistake by Fred before Chris Smalling scored an own goal to inflict Solskjaer's first defeat since he was appointed on a full-time basis.
While the Norwegian had no complaints about referee Mike Dean's decision to send off Young just before the hour mark, he was frustrated that his players failed to convert more of their chances.
He said: "A very good start, we should have been three up. It was a very good performance until they scored the second goal.
"But for their goalkeeper, we should have won. That's football for you and that's why it's the game we all love, it's not like maths."
Asked whether the wobble - United have picked up three points out of a possible nine - means things are "resetting" at Old Trafford after an excellent initial impact, Solskjaer claimed he could not "control the result".

  • 3

Points won by Manchester United out of a possible nine in their last three Premier League matches.

He added: "We don't look at it as that. We can control what we do on the pitch performance-wise, and we've played well enough tonight.
"So I don't think there is any kickback. I was very pleased with the chances and the intent."
The result means the Red Devils remain fifth, and two points behind Arsenal, who have a game in hand.
They still need to face league champions Manchester City and Chelsea at home, while Luke Shaw will be suspended for their next two games after collecting his 10th yellow card of the campaign.
However, Solskjaer insisted he was still "confident" and that "it is going to be difficult for anybody who plays against us".
The 46-year-old, who revealed he had an eye on the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona next Wednesday, added: "Now we need 15 (points) from the last six (matches), so we don't have room for many more losses.
"It is a difficult run, but then we are a very good team as well.
"We will use one or two days to analyse and recover, and then we will prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge."
Separately, Fulham became the second club to be relegated after a 4-1 loss at Watford on Tuesday.
Despite splurging over £100 million (S$177.9 million) on players since winning promotion last year, it has been a wretched term for the Cottagers, who have the league's worst defensive record, shipping 76 goals in 33 games.
Owner Shahid Khan yesterday apologised to the fans for the debacle before stating that the club's hierarchy "hold ourselves accountable".

Jurong East Stadium, 5.30pm
Former national defender Noh Rahman got his coaching career in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) off to the best possible start on Wednesday after he guided Home United to an impressive 3-0 win over Geylang International.
But the 38-year-old, who took over the reins on an interim basis from Saswadimata Dasuki last Friday, has not had much time to enjoy his maiden victory.
With a wry smile, he told The Straits Times yesterday: "Being a player and a coach are two very different things.
"As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games.
"As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game."
He is expecting a much tougher challenge today against defending champions Albirex Niigata at the Jurong East Stadium.

NO TIME TO REST
As a player, you just have to focus on what you eat, how you train, and to give your best in games. As a coach, the minute one game ends, you're already thinking about the next game.
NOH RAHMAN, Home United's interim head coach, is slowly becoming aware of the huge demands of the job.

The Japanese team went undefeated last season en route to a third straight league championship, but a new league rule this term means Albirex had to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two of them starting and playing the entire first half.
Albirex are smarting after a 4-2 defeat by Hougang United on Wednesday, their second loss of the season, and are fourth on 11 points after seven games, one ahead of fifth-placed Home.
Said Noh: "It's a 5.30pm kick-off on a hard (artificial) ground, and it could be hot. We are expecting a tough game."
During a 20-year playing career which he called time on at the end of 2016, he earned 79 international caps as well as a reputation for being one of the most professional local footballers around. Widely respected by his peers, he won two league titles (2001, 2002), two Singapore Cups (2012, 2013) and two AFF Suzuki Cups (2004, 2007).
One of the first things the rookie coach did after his appointment was to consult a group of six senior players. "It was quite a lengthy meeting where we shared quite a lot of things, and I appreciate the players (for) being honest," he said.
Veteran full-back Juma'at Jantan, 35, was one of those involved.
Said Juma'at: "In football, one of the most important things is communication. If we have that, things will fall into place.

"Noh is a no-nonsense type on and off the field and the players, even myself, look up to him. And he is open (to feedback) as well, so I think he is the best choice to lead the team for now."
Juma'at, along with Izzdin Shafiq, Abdil Qaiyyim and South Korean midfielder Song Ui-yong in the squad, were teammates with Noh when he played at the Protectors from 2013 to 2015.
Asked if he felt weird coaching players he once shared a pitch and changing room with, Noh said: "Yes, a little bit. But they are great, they know where the line between a coach and the players is. And I appreciate the fact they understand their roles in the team well."
Home youngster Adam Swandi recalled that Noh was one of the established seniors when he received his first Lions call-up in 2013.
The 23-year-old, who scored against Geylang, said: "Coach Noh has a lot of experience and he is a role model for players like me.
"He has so much to offer our team and Singapore football."
Noh said he has been told by the club that a new head coach would be appointed within six weeks, and is looking forward to returning to his role of assistant coach, which he said was "to assist and learn".

AFC Cup: Tampines Rovers revitalised by break, ahead of clash with Cambodia's Nagaworld

SINGAPORE - Tampines Rovers have spluttered a little following a fine start to the season, but head coach Kadir Yahaya on Tuesday (April 16) said he believes a 10-day break ahead of their AFC Cup Group F game with Nagaworld FC on Wednesday has rejuvenated the squad.
The Stags had won four and drawn one of their first five games in all competitions, scoring 15 goals along the way, but then squandereda host of chances in a 0-0 draw with Albirex Niigata in the Singapore Premier League on March 29.
They rebounded by beating Nagaworld 5-1 in Phnom Penh three days later, but then slipped to a 2-1 loss to Brunei DPMM in Bandar Seri Begawan on April 7. Kadir said the travelling took its toll on his players.
Speaking at the pre-game press conference at the Peninsula Excelsior Hotel, the 51-year-old said: "It has been a much-needed break.
"We have been travelling, training, playing and it is tiring, especially for the national team boys who came back (from international duty in late-March).
"Some had niggling injuries, some were not 100 per cent fit, but we have got them rested and now they're coming back fresh. We hope the rest will see us give a good performance tomorrow."
Tampines defender Amirul Adli, 23, said he and his teammates are very motivated to bounce back from the DPMM loss.
"We are looking at the big picture; there are a lot of games this season and this is just one setback," he said. "We'll learn from our mistakes in the Brunei game, and we are raring to go. We will use the loss as a motivation for us to get back to our winning ways and do even better from now on."
Despite their handsome win in the first meeting with the Cambodian team , Kadir warned the scoreline flattered the Stags.
"The game was quite even, and at 1-1 (Nagaworld) had clear chance to make it 2-1 but were not able to take it," noted the former Singapore defender. "After that we controlled the game and scored our goals... So we are taking this game very seriously."
Tampines top Group F with seven points after three games, followed by Vietnam's Ha Noi (four), Nagaworld and Myanmar's Yangon United (both on three points).
Nagaworld coach Meas Channa, however, is bracing for another onslaught at the Jalan Besar Stadium. The 35-year-old singled out the Stags trio of Japanese winger Ryutaro Megumi, Canadian attacker Jordan Webb and Serbian playmaker Zehrudin Mehmedovic as danger men.
"Tomorrow's game will be very tough for us," said Channa, whose side were also trounced 10-0 by Vietnamese side Ha Noi in an earlier Group F game.
"We played well in the first half (in Phnom Penh) so we will try to do that again, but we may have to be more defensive in the second half."

Football: Tampines Rovers' new signing Zehrudin Mehmedovic proving to be an instant hit

SINGAPORE - In the short span of two and a half months and two games, Zehrudin Mehmedovic has proved that he could turn out to be an astute signing and key player for Tampines Rovers in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season.
Despite the language barrier, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder has settled down well with the Stags, scoring two goals in their last two games against Yangon United (3-1 win in the AFC Cup Group F opener) and Hougang United (5-1 win in SPL opener) last week.
"I'm very pleased that I played a part in helping the team win. We played two strong teams so I feel proud that I played a part in the two victories," said the Serb, who can speak only basic English.
Mehmedovic was brought in by Tampines' assistant coach Fahrudin Mustafic, who said: "He's a young player, but he's very creative. These days, there aren't many No. 10 players who can give you quality final passes and can receive the ball around the box and score.
"So he adds that extra quality and he's doing well so far. It's a huge step for him to come to a foreign country, but he has been training hard and showing signs of improvement."
While Mustafic acknowledged that the young player still has a long way to go, he believes that if Mehmedovic continues to work hard, he can stamp his mark on the SPL.
Setting his sights on a trophy this season, the youngster said: "I came here to win something with Tampines."
After two wins, the Stags hope to continue their good start to the season with another victory against local rivals Home United at Our Tampines Hub on Friday (March 8).
The Protectors won the Community Shield on Feb 23 after beating SPL defending champions Albirex Niigata in a penalty shoot-out, but lost 1-0 to Brunei DPMM in their first league game last week.
"I think the fans can expect a good exciting game as both teams play attacking and entertaining football," said Mustafic.
Home will miss their influential South Korean midfielder Song Ui-young, who scored 20 goals for the Protectors last season but is sidelined with a groin injury.
Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said: "Song is a good attacker and we are missing his creativity and ability to bang the goals in. But we still have players we can rotate and experiment with to adapt to his absence.
"Tampines have started the season well and scored goals from different sources, but that doesn't mean we will sit back. We will still be going for the three points with our own style," he said.

Football: I cannot stop Messi alone, admits Liverpool's Van Dijk

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk insists he will not face a personal duel against Lionel Messi in his side's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona.
Van Dijk is in contention for player of the year awards in England thanks to his transformative effect on Liverpool since becoming the world's most expensive defender when moving from Southampton for £75 million (S$130 million) last January.
However, the Dutchman believes a collective effort is required to halt Messi, who has scored 45 goals this season, two of which helped Barca beat Manchester United 4-0 on aggregate to progress to the last four.
"I think he's the best player in the world but we'll see. It's going to be a great match-up for all of us," said Van Dijk, who netted himself as Liverpool thrashed Porto 4-1 on Wednesday to complete a 6-1 aggregate victory.
"It's about doing it all together, it's never one-v-one, it's never just me against a particular striker.
"It's always us against everyone and I think that's the only way we can defend well."
Liverpool's defence could be further bolstered for the Premier League and Champions League run-in by the return of Joe Gomez. Gomez formed a formidable partnership with Van Dijk earlier in the season before breaking a leg in December.

Gomez made his return as a substitute in northern Portugal and is also preparing himself for the prospect of facing the "best player in the world" in Messi.
"It'll be a difficult game. They're one of the best in the world, clearly, and they've probably got the best player in the world and many others around him," said Gomez.
"So it's going to be a difficult game, but that's what the Champions League is about.
"You don't get this far to have easy games and we know you have to earn your place in the next round."

Ole aiming for European glory

Ole aiming for European glory

LONDON • Manchester United can ride their resurgence to mount a realistic challenge for the Champions League, said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is edging closer to becoming the club's permanent manager.
United's remarkable upturn under the Norwegian, who arrived as interim boss in December, continued with a stylish 3-0 Premier League win on Saturday at Fulham - where his agent Jim Solbakken was alongside Ed Woodward, United's executive chairman, and Avram Glazer, one of the club's co-owners, in the directors' box.
United's next opponents are Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 tomorrow, and Solskjaer suggested United can not only overcome the Parisians but are also capable of going all the way in Europe's top club competition that they last won in 2008.
While the club are yet to close the door on other possibilities such as offering the post to Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino, defeating PSG could make Solskjaer's case to replace Jose Mourinho on a full-time basis a stronger one.
"Anything's possible, definitely," said Solskjaer regarding the PSG tie. "We are performing well and, hopefully after this round, teams and supporters can talk about us as a challenger (for the Champions League).
But he felt that talk of a United run for the English title was overblown, although the team could still have some influence over the eventual champions.
He said: "It's too far, the teams ahead. But we've got Liverpool, we've got City (still to play), so we might have a say in what's happening at the top of the table."

PSG'S PLAN D AGAINST UNITED
We have lots of Plan Bs. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a Plan D. It is super difficult... But we will be ready on Tuesday.
PSG COACH THOMAS TUCHEL, on dealing with the injuries to his key players.

The 45-year-old, who has won 10 of his 11 games in charge while on loan from Molde and has taken United from sixth into fourth in the league, is being entrusted to influence United's long-term planning.
His belief in Phil Jones was a factor in the defender signing a contract extension and his playing principles was an influence in the sale of the physical Marouane Fellaini.
But it is his immediate task that could determine his future, although he may be helped by an injury to Edinson Cavani, PSG's all-time leading scorer who has netted 22 times this season.
The talismanic Brazilian Neymar is not expected back from a metatarsal injury until early April.
Cavani appeared to hurt his leg while taking the penalty three minutes before half-time that gave the hosts a 1-0 Ligue 1 win over Bordeaux on Saturday. PSG suffered their first league defeat this term, a 2-1 loss at Lyon, the previous week.
Sports daily L'Equipe reported that a scan yesterday revealed a torn thigh muscle and suggested he may also miss the March 6 return leg. Coach Thomas Tuchel admitted "the news will not be good" and he might need to resort to "Plan D".
He said: "It is too much. These are quality players for decisive matches. Not everyone can play at that level in the Champions League. We don't have a second Edi.
"We have lots of Plan Bs. Without Ney, maybe without Marco, maybe without Edi. We have a Plan D.
"It is super difficult... But we will be ready on Tuesday."
French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe could start as a lone striker at Old Trafford, supported by Julian Draxler and Angel di Maria, who spent one underwhelming season at United after signing for a then-British record £60 million (S$105 million).

Old Glory is a nickname for the flag of the United States. The original "Old Glory" was a flag owned by the 19th-century American sea captain William Driver (March 17, 1803 - March 3, 1886), who flew the flag during his career at sea and later brought it to Nashville, Tennessee, where he settled.
