Football: Son says South Korea need to be 'better' at Asian Cup
DUBAI (REUTERS) - Son Heung-min played an influential role in keeping South Korea at the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 22) but warned his team mates they needed to step up their game if they want to end their 59-year wait for the title.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward, playing his second match at the tournament, helped South Korea to a laboured 2-1 extra time victory over Bahrain, which earned them a quarter-final match-up against Qatar.
"I think we're better than that," he told reporters.
"We got the result, the performance was not great but sometimes you take the result. We are looking forward to playing the quarter-final, which will be another tough match."
Son came in for some close attention in what was sometimes a rough match but scoffed at the suggestion that he might be being targeted as the most high-profile player at the continental championship.
"Sometimes it's difficult when you play such a team who play 10 players in defence, you don't find the space and everyone can be a target," he added.
"We should learn from this and play better."
Â
Son only joined his team mates in the United Arab Emirates for their final group match against China as part of a deal with Spurs that allowed him to play for his country at last year's Asian Games.
The 26-year-old said that his experience in the English Premier League would help him cope with playing another match on Friday against the youthful Qatari team at Abu Dhabi's Zayed Sports City.
"It about mentality I think," he said.
"Yes, I'm tired, after the game I'm tired, of course, but I'll try to recover as quickly as possible and play again in three days.
"It's the same when I play for Tottenham."

Football: Watford's Andre Gray strikes late winner to spoil Brendan Rodgers' Leicester debut against former side
(REUTERS) - Watford's Andre Gray scored a stoppage-time winner as Leicester began life under new boss Brendan Rodgers in underwhelming fashion, suffering a 2-1 defeat at his former club in the English Premier League on Sunday (March 3).
Watford clinched victory in the second minute of added time as Troy Deeney latched on to a poor goal kick by Leicester custodian Kasper Schmeichel and fed substitute Gray, who held his nerve to score.
Watford had taken the lead through Deeney in the fifth minute, as the striker got his body across Wes Morgan and rose well to head home Gerard Deulofeu's whipped ball from a free kick for his first goal in 10 matches at Vicarage Road.
Leicester responded after the break, as Jamie Vardy ran onto a fine through ball from midfielder Youri Tielemens and dinked his finish over Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster for his 10th league goal of the season.
Despite conceding early, Leicester looked lively as the first half wore on but were unable to convert their good build-up play into clear chances, as Watford comfortably maintained their defensive discipline.
Watford began the second half on the front foot as Deulofeu combined well with Roberto Pereyra to tee up Abdoulaye Doucoure, whose curling shot from distance was swatted away by Schmeichel.
Vardy, who endured a heavy collision with Foster earlier in the match, was substituted minutes after scoring as he appeared to suffer a delayed reaction to the knock.
Watford, eighth on 43 points, are at champions Manchester City next, while 11th-placed Leicester (35) host second-bottom Fulham.

Football: Zohore gives Cardiff 2-1 win over Southampton in thrilling finish
SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Cardiff City's Kenneth Zohore struck deep into stoppage time to secure a crucial 2-1 win on Saturday (Feb 9) at fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton, who thought they had snatched a point with a 91st-minute equaliser.
Southampton's Jack Stephens bundled the ball into the net in added time, but Cardiff went back up the other end and substitute Zohore scuffed home a shot to give Cardiff only their second away win of the season.
After a slow start, Southampton upped the tempo in the second half but they were hit by a sucker punch when centre back Sol Bamba pounced, volleying home Callum Paterson's knockdown from Cardiff's first corner of the game in the 69th minute.
The win lifted Cardiff out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, while Southampton will slip into the bottom three if Burnley get at least a point in Saturday's late kickoff against Brighton and Hove Albion.
It was another emotional day for Cardiff following the recovery of the body of striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane that crashed taking him to join up with the Welsh club after he signed from French side Nantes.
The game was preceded by a minute's silence for the 28-year-old Argentine, who was Cardiff's record signing, and the players of both teams wore black armbands.
After beating Bournemouth 2-0 last week, the victory over Southampton marked the first time Cardiff have won back-to-back games in the Premier League, and Bamba believes his side had a little help from above.
Â
"It can't get better, scoring the first goal in front of our fans. A lot goes through your mind. I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points," he said.
After picking up nine points from the first five league games of 2019, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was left to rue his side's defending.
"If you score an equaliser in added time, you have to take a minimum of one point. It would help us a lot for the mentality, the atmosphere and the feeling for the future," he said.
"What we did now was to roll a big stone in our way, and to remove that will take a lot of time."

Asian Cup 2019: Vietnam and China through to quarter-finals
DUBAI • Jordan had not conceded a single goal en route to the round of 16 at the Asian Cup, but Vietnam showed they were far from overawed by their opponents' greater pedigree to triumph 4-2 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 following extra time yesterday.
The Middle Eastern side became the first team to book their place in the knockout stage, beating reigning champions Australia and Syria to win Group B, while the Vietnamese had only squeaked through by virtue of having a superior disciplinary record to Lebanon.
Yet there were no signs of any inferiority complex from Park Hang-seo's Vietnam side as they matched Jordan for effort, with little to separate the teams in a tightly contested match at the Al Maktoum Stadium.
Vital Borkelmans' men, however, opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Their goal was disputable though, with Vietnam having some grounds for grievance.
They were penalised for a high boot, with Jordan being awarded an indirect free kick inside the box. It also looked like Yousef Al-Rawashdeh had touched the ball to tee-up Baha Abdel-Rahman, who lashed it into the roof of the net.
But the AFF Suzuki Cup champions did not let their heads drop.
Going behind galvanised Vietnam and they responded by peppering Amer Shafi's goal, with Do Hung Dung coming closest to breaching the Jordan defence.
And they were rewarded for their tenacity with Nguyen Cong Phuong's volleyed equaliser six minutes after the break.
Nguyen Trong Hoang sent an inviting cross into the area and Phuong got between their backline to flick the ball into the net.
But, while both teams went in search of the winner, neither could find the breakthrough.
In the shoot-out, Jordan fluffed their lines with Baha Faisal hitting the bar, while Dang Van Lam proved to be Vietnam's hero, saving Ahmed Samir's effort.
Although Amer Shafi palmed away Tran Minh Vuong's attempt, substitute Bui Tien Dung then converted his penalty, sending his side through to a meeting with powerhouses Japan or Saudi Arabia, who play each other today, on Thursday.
In the later match, China beat Thailand 2-1. Supachai Jaided opened the scoring for the Thais in the 31st minute, but goals from Xiao Zhi and Gao Lin (penalty) in the second half saw the Chinese through to the quarter-finals.

OLOMOUC, CZECH REPUBLIC (REUTERS) - Czech Republic eased to a 3-0 win over Montenegro helped by an own goal and a penalty in the second half on Monday (June 10) as they claimed a second consecutive win in Euro 2020 qualifying.
The victory moved the Czechs level on six points with Group A leaders England, who beat them 5-0 at Wembley in their opening match and have a game in hand having played only twice.
The Czechs opened the scoring against Montenegro in the 18th minute when Jakub Jankto slammed a left-foot volley into the net from a tight angle after Pavel Kaderabek sent over a deep cross.
Their lead was doubled just after the break when Boris Kopitovic deflected Patrik Schick's cross into his own goal after the forward had rounded a defender.
Schick got the third with a penalty in the 82nd which he smashed home after being sent sprawling in the area.
Montenegro - who fired Serbian coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic on Saturday (June 8)after he pulled out of Friday's qualifier against Kosovo which they drew 1-1 - have two points along with Bulgaria, who conceded an added-time goal in a 3-2 home defeat by the Kosovans, who are third with five points.

Football: Singapore fall short in bid to qualify for AFC U-23 Championship finals despite beating Mongolia 3-1
SINGAPORE - The Singapore national Under-22 team ended their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualification campaign unbeaten after defeating Mongolia 3-1 on Tuesday (March 26), but their joy was dampened by elimination from an insufficient points tally.
Fandi Ahmad's men finished second in Group G with five points from three games, which included 1-1 draws against Hong Kong and group winners North Korea.
The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will join host Thailand in the 2020 finals in January.
Even before the last round of fixtures was played on Tuesday, Oman, Bahrain, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Australia, Myanmar, Malaysia and Vietnam all occupy second place in their respective groups with six points.
Despite bowing out, Fandi was happy with how his charges fared in the campaign, saying: "It all went very well even though we have difficulties. The teamwork is there, the coaching staff are very together, the camaraderie is very good.
"We didn't qualify, but we gave our all. The boys sacrificed a lot and to finish second in the group, without a defeat, is something that has never happened in this age group."
In three previous editions of the AFC U-23 Championship in 2013, 2016 and 2018, Singapore had never reached the finals and suffered at least a defeat in each qualifying campaign and never finished higher than third in their group.
The Young Lions were stunned after just three minutes at the MFF Football Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on Tuesday when Mongolia's Batbayar Khash-Erdene steered a looping header past goalkeeper Zharfan Rohaizad.
The Republic equalised in the 33rd minute through forward Amiruldin Asraf's header from a Hami Syahin cross from the left.
Two minutes before half-time, centre-back Irfan Fandi arrived at the far post to meet left-back Syahrul Sazali's free kick and power his header emphatically past goalkeeper Sanchir Anand. And, in the 71st minute, forward Ikhsan Fandi flicked the ball on for Hami to sprint clear and score the third goal.
Fandi, 56, said: "We're just happy that the boys came back with good fighting spirit and good discipline. I know these Mongolian players are fighters, they fought very hard and they are good players and a hard-working team."
The Under-22s have another major assignment this year in November's SEA Games and Fandi hopes that he can mould them into a unit that can deliver a historic gold medal.
He said: "This is a good team that we have to keep together. The coaching staff are very satisfied with the performance of the players."

Stay calm, urges cancer-hit Sevilla boss
SEVILLE • In the second cancer diagnosis to hit Sevilla coaches in just two years, Joaquin Caparros revealed on Sunday that he was suffering from chronic leukaemia.
Speaking after their 2-0 LaLiga victory over Valladolid, he also announced he had yet to undergo any treatment.
However, the 63-year-old, who took over last month after Pablo Machin was sacked, reassured the home fans that the condition was under control before appealing "for everyone to stay calm".
The Spaniard told reporters: "I have caught it early and can live a normal life. I want to enjoy my job and am grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity (to continue coaching)."
Previously Sevilla's sporting director, Caparros is now acting as caretaker coach until the end of the season. His appointment has coincided with an upturn in fortunes, with the team winning four of his six games in charge.
Another former Sevilla coach, Eduardo Berizzo, announced in November 2017 that he was suffering from prostate cancer.
He was sacked a month later following a string of bad results.
The victory over Valladolid moved Sevilla up to fifth in the table after two goals in the final six minutes from Roque Mesa and Munir El Haddadi.
They are now only a point behind surprise package Getafe, who they play on April 21 after a crunch derby at home to Betis on Saturday.
Urging his players to focus on securing the goal of a Champions League spot and not to get distracted by his illness, Caparros said: "That is our objective and we are going to do everything we can to achieve it."
In response to the upsetting news, Caparros received plenty of good wishes from the football fraternity in Spain, with Athletic Bilbao, who he managed from 2007 to 2011, tweeting: "You have all our support. You are a lion and you will come out a winner."
Separately, fourth-placed Getafe kept their own remarkable bid for Champions League qualification on track by edging past Bilbao 1-0 courtesy of Angel Rodriguez Diaz's winner.

LONDON (REUTERS) - Huddersfield Town were relegated from the Premier League on Saturday (March 30) after a 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace and results elsewhere meant they could not survive in the top flight.
Victories for Burnley at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton away at Brighton & Hove Albion ended Huddersfield's two-year stay in the Premier League.
With six games still left to play this season, they become the second team ever to be relegated from the Premier League before the end of March.

Xavi hangs up his boots, aspires to coach Barca
TEHERAN • Xavi Hernandez hopes to one day become the coach of Spanish champions Barcelona, the club where he spent 17 years of his 21-year senior career.
But for now, the 39-year-old, who officially hung up his boots on Monday, indicated that he will stay in Qatar to begin his coaching career.
He is likely to remain in a highly paid role with his club Al Sadd, rather than return to Spain.
"The idea is to start as a coach in Qatar, where there is less pressure, to test myself and get some experience," he told Spain's Efe agency in Teheran just hours before Al Sadd faced Iranian side Persepolis in their last group match of the AFC Champions League on Monday.
"I eventually want to return to Europe and hopefully Barcelona but I'm excited to start as a coach, although I'm not ready yet for the top level. I need to walk before I can run but obviously my ultimate goal is to end up becoming Barcelona coach.
"Football can be played in many different ways but I've always been a huge fan of Barcelona's approach.
"The way in which they control the game and keep the ball is the style I've grown up with and it is the style I'll use when I'm a coach."
Al Sadd coach Jesualdo Ferreira predicted that Xavi will become a great manager in future, adding it was beautiful to work with "one of the best players in the world".
Xavi helped Spain win the World Cup in 2010 and also four Champions League and eight LaLiga titles with Barcelona. But he ended his career on a low key when Al Sadd were beaten 2-0 by Persepolis.
Several home fans brandished banners reading "Adios Xavi" to show their appreciation of the player who with Andres Iniesta formed the backbone of one of Barcelona's greatest ever sides.
Xavi was also honoured by the Persepolis management who presented him with a jersey featuring the No. 6 he has worn in his career.

Football: Australian players' union demands World Cup prize-money parity
MELBOURNE (REUTERS) - Australia's soccer players' union has launched a campaign calling for prize-money parity at the women's and men's World Cups, and offered support for the country's footballers to take legal action against global governing body Fifa.
The winning team at the women's World Cup in France, which starts on Friday, will receive US$4 million (S$5.47 million) in prize money from the tournament's total pool of US$30 million. In contrast, France banked US$38 million for winning the men's tournament in Russia last year.
Professional Footballers Australia Chief Executive John Didulica and other PFA executives wrote to Fifa last week demanding an immediate doubling in prize money for the women's tournament, saying the players were "victims of discrimination".
"The PFA expressly reserves the rights of the players to have this matter resolved through appropriate means including mediation and arbitration," the letter, addressed to Fifa's Chief Officer for Women's Football Sarai Bareman, said.
The PFA has launched a website (www.ourgoalisnow.com) outlining the campaign's aims and instructing women's players how to participate.
Australia's Matildas, quarter-finalists at the last women's World Cup in Canada, have thrown their weight behind the campaign, with players posting its logo and video on their social media accounts.
Gender pay disparity in football was put in the spotlight in March when the US women's team sued the US federation, alleging gender discrimination three months before their World Cup title defence.
Although prize money at the women's World Cup in France is double the amount from Canada, the pay gap with the men's tournament actually increased to US$370 million from US$343 million. The men's prize money grew from US$358 million at the 2014 Brazil World Cup to US$400 million in Russia.
Fifa is hosting its first "Women's Football Convention" in Paris on June 6-7 where it said leaders from the world of sports and politics would discuss the development and empowerment of women in soccer.

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's winning start as Manchester United's caretaker manager ended with a 2-2 draw at home to Burnley on Tuesday (Jan 29), but his side avoided defeat in spirited fashion with two late goals.
Goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood had given Burnley a 2-0 lead before a late rally from United with a penalty from Paul Pogba in the 87th minute and a stoppage-time goal from Victor Lindelof saved their blushes.
Solskjaer had won his opening six Premier League games after replacing Jose Mourinho in December and the result means United missed out on a chance to go level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
Burnley, who are now unbeaten in five and move up to 15th, went ahead in the 51st minute when Ashley Barnes blasted home after being put through by Jack Cork.
The Clarets doubled their lead in the 81st minute when Chris Wood headed in a cross from Ashley Westwood at the back post.
But United got a foothold when Jesse Lingard was pulled down by Jeff Hendrick and Pogba drove home the penalty.
In the second minute of stoppage time Burnley keeper Tom Heaton parried an Alexis Sanchez header but Lindelof reacted well to fire in the equaliser.
Premier League leaders Manchester City recovered from two goals down to beat Championship side Swansea City 3-2 at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday to progress to the FA Cup semi-finals.

Europa League hat-trick hero Giroud hoping for EPL chance
Europa League hat-trick hero Giroud hoping for EPL chance
LONDON • Olivier Giroud has not given up hope of regaining a place in Chelsea's Premier League team, with his prolific form in European competition as he seeks to extend his stay for a further year.
The Frenchman's hat-trick in last Thursday's 5-0 thrashing of Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine established him as the leading scorer in this season's Europa League, with nine goals in as many games.
Yet the striker, an £18 million (S$31.9 million) signing from Arsenal in January last year, has played only 56 minutes of top-flight football this year.
Giroud signed an 18-month contract but there is an option for Chelsea to extend his stay by a year.
Asked whether he would accept life as a substitute at the Blues, he said: "No chance. I'm a competitor and I want to play every single game and to be happy on the pitch.
"I am not picking the team, the manager makes the choices. I play in the Europa League and I am happy to help the team. The Premier League is another thing. I'm 32 but I'm still young. I feel very well physically."
Giroud, who has made only 12 Premier League starts and scored four league goals since arriving at Stamford Bridge, must now displace Gonzalo Higuain, who joined in January on a loan deal.
The 31-year-old Argentinian missed the trip to Ukraine owing to illness but should be in contention for the Premier League match at Everton's Goodison Park today.
Two goals on his third start for the club in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield suggested Higuain would not take long to find his feet.
His form since then, however, has been underwhelming. A return of just one more goal, in the win at Fulham, would be much more acceptable if the forward's all-round play was helping to bring out the best in other players around him.
There has been limited evidence of that, and there is certainly a case to be made that Giroud provides a focal point up front.
The problem for Maurizio Sarri is that the fight for a top-four finish - Chelsea have 57 points, three behind fourth-placed Arsenal - means he has little margin for error and it remains to be seen if Giroud is rewarded with a start today.

Football: Spurs star Alli ruled out until March
LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham have suffered a fresh injury blow after England midfielder Dele Alli was ruled out until March with a hamstring strain.
Alli was forced off in the closing stages of Tottenham's 2-1 win at Fulham on Sunday (Jan 20) and scans have confirmed the extent of the star's injury.
The 22-year-old's absence is a massive setback for Tottenham, who are already without England striker Harry Kane until March due to an ankle ligament problem.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is also without South Korea forward Son Heung-Min, who is on international duty for several weeks.
"Following scans and clinical assessment, we can confirm that Dele Alli has suffered a hamstring strain," a statement on Tottenham's website said.
"Dele will now undergo a period of rehabilitation with our medical staff with the expectation of returning to training in early March."
Alli is set to miss a host of crucial games, including Tottenham's Champions League last 16 tie against Borussia Dortmund.
His injury also puts a huge dent in third-placed Tottenham's slender hopes of chasing down Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Tottenham will now face Chelsea in Thursday's League Cup semi-final second leg without three of their key players.
England midfielder Eric Dier, just back from appendix surgery, is a contender to step in for Alli, while Fernando Llorente deputised for Kane in the win over Fulham.

'Cold' Emery won't play to Arsenal crowd
LONDON • Unai Emery insisted that he would continue to make "cold" decisions after he was booed by Arsenal fans at the Emirates on Tuesday, when he took off Alexandre Lacazette and brought on Aaron Ramsey during the 4-1 Premier League win over Fulham.
The Gunners manager said he would not listen to supporters because it was his job to make the tactical move to stop Jean Michael Seri advancing from midfield.
Seri came on when Fulham trailed 2-0 and won possession at the start of the move that reduced the deficit. He looked as though he might create an equaliser.
The home supporters initially booed Emery but striker Lacazette, who scored his side's second goal, turned their reaction into cheers by applauding the Emirates crowd.
Midfielder Ramsey then scored within four minutes of coming on.
"We need to make decisions with a very cold mind that is for the best," said Emery, whose side have won only two of their last six games in all competitions.
"I understand the supporters, but I need to do my work. Our challenge is to improve defensively.
"Tactically, we thought we needed to change for more balance. We knew Seri was coming and needed a player close to him."

The Gunners were shaken by a 5-1 thrashing from leaders Liverpool last Saturday exposing their defensive frailty, and that weakness was evident again against the Cottagers. Their nerves were eased in the 25th minute when Granit Xhaka struck after collecting a chip into the box from Alex Iwobi on his chest and slotting home.
Following Lacazette's goal to make it 2-0, Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back for Fulham in the 69th minute before Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rounded off the win for Arsenal.
Shkodran Mustafi came off at the interval after he felt a recurrence of the hamstring injury suffered last month. Arsenal are short of centre-backs but Emery said he had not spoken to Gary Cahill, available on loan from Chelsea.
"We can sign one or two players if the transfer market gives us an opportunity," he said. "But it is not easy."

MADRID (REUTERS) - Holders Real Madrid were sensationally knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday (March 5) after being thrashed 4-1 at home by an outstanding Ajax Amsterdam who overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the quarter-finals 5-3 on aggregate.
Moroccan midfielder Hakim Ziyech fired Ajax into a shock seventh-minute lead after a lay off from the outstanding Dusan Tadic, who also provided the pass for David Neres to double the Dutch side's advantage in the 18th.
Madrid, who were missing inspirational captain Sergio Ramos through suspension and hit the woodwork twice in the first half, came out stronger after the interval but were dealt a fatal blow when Serbia international Tadic crowned his sensational display by hammering into the top corner in the 62nd minute.
Substitute Marco Asensio gave Madrid a glimmer of hope by striking back but it was quickly extinguished by a breathtaking free kick from Lasse Schone, condemning Real to a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions.
Things got worse for the hosts, who had won the last three Champions League titles in a row, when Nacho was sent off in stoppage time for two bookings.
Ajax, who have won the trophy four times, most recently in 1995, reached the last eight of Europe's top competition for the first time since 2003.
Thirteen-times winners Madrid, who have lifted the trophy in four of the last five years, and had reached at least the semi-finals for the last eight seasons, suffered their earliest elimination since 2010.
Madrid, who had suffered consecutive home defeats to Barcelona in the run up to the game and are an embarrassing 12 points behind the Catalans in La Liga, endured rotten fortune throughout the game, losing Lucas Vazquez and livewire Brazilian teenager Vinicius Junior to injury in the first half.
The night could have gone very differently had Madrid defender Raphael Varane headed under the crossbar instead of against it in the fifth minute, moments before Ziyech scored.
Ajax had Madrid on the ropes after the second goal and should have further increased their advantage, as Neres chipped wide when clean through against Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.
The Belgian later leapt across his goal to parry a shot from Ziyech, and used his body to thwart Tadic.
He made some more impressive saves in the second half but was powerless to stop Tadic's thunderbolt and was caught out by Schone's free kick, which looked to be a cross but went straight in.
Real substitute Gareth Bale blasted against the near post in the first half and suffered a painful end to the match. The Wales forward was forced to stay on the pitch after appearing to injure his ankle late on as coach Santiago Solari had used all three substitutes.

Mbappe sent off in Cup shock
PARIS • Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday's French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.
PSG substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot kick over the bar in the shoot-out, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.
"It has been talked about enough at the club in the last few weeks for us to realise that we have achieved something historic," said Rennes coach Julien Stephan.
It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and the returning Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. PSG looked poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe's own goal gave Rennes hope and Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to force extra time.
Penalties were already looming when Mbappe, who endured a frustrating evening, was shown a straight red card in the 118th minute.
He caught Rennes defender Damien da Silva on the knee with his studs, and can expect a lengthy ban.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said: "He had a slight muscle injury yesterday, he stopped training early and went to hospital for tests. Maybe that was in his head. You got the feeling he was lacking confidence and didn't feel free. The red card at the end, it's not him."
PSG fell short of securing the double in Tuchel's first season in charge, which will also be remembered for the club's Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.
"I am sad," said Neymar. "We weren't quite up to it, but there is no point crying about it now. There is nothing we can do."

Football: Suspended Thierry Henry set to lose Monaco job
PARIS (REUTERS) - Thierry Henry was suspended by Monaco on Thursday (Jan 24) and looked set to lose his job as coach after only three months in charge at the Ligue 1 club, with former manager Leonardo Jardim expected to take control from Friday.
"Monaco have decided to suspend Thierry Henry... until a final decision (on his future) is made," the principality club said in a statement.
Jardim, who was sacked himself last October and replaced by Henry, was expected to be unveiled as the manager on Friday after agreeing terms on a two-and-half-year contract late on Thursday, L'Equipe reported.
Portuguese coach Jardim led Monaco to the Ligue 1 title in 2017, the same year they reached the Champions League semi-finals, before being sacked after a poor start to the current season.
Monaco, who appointed the former Arsenal and France striker to replace Jardim in October, have picked up only two points in their last five Ligue 1 encounters and sit second from bottom in the table.
The principality side were also knocked out of the French Cup in the last 32 by Ligue 2 side Metz on Tuesday.
This followed a 5-1 demolition at home by Racing Strasbourg in their last league outing with the club showing no signs of improvement since signing midfielder Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea earlier this month.
During that game, Henry made an abusive remark to a Strasbourg player and later apologised.
The club said Franck Passi, Henry's assistant coach since December, would be in charge of the team's training on Friday.
Passi has previously had caretaker roles at Lille and Olympique de Marseille.
Henry, who started out playing for Monaco and went on to enjoy a stellar club career with Arsenal and Barcelona, worked as assistant coach for Belgium for two years until 2018 but had never been in charge of a team in his own right.
Henry, 41, played for Monaco for five seasons, winning a league title with them in 1997.
Henry said earlier on Thursday that he would downsize his squad ahead of a crucial game at fellow strugglers Dijon in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
"We need guys who want to save the club, who don't think about themselves. We're going to war," he told reporters.
"But despite the results we are still alive," he added, refusing to speculate on his future at the club.
Monaco are three points from the safety zone with 15 points from 21 games. Under Henry, they have won only four out of 20 competitive games.
Their only chance of a trophy this season is in the League Cup, where they will face En Avant Guingamp in the semi-finals next week.

Monaco are three points from the safety zone with 15 points from 21 games. Under Henry, they have won only four out of 20 competitive games.
Their only chance of a trophy this season is in the League Cup, where they will face En Avant Guingamp in the semi-finals next week.

Football: Fulham relegated after 4-1 thrashing at Watford
LONDON (REUTERS)- Fulham were relegated from the Premier League after collapsing to a 4-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday (April 2), a result which left them 16 points adrift of the safety zone with five games remaining.
The West London side, owned by American businessman Shahid Khan, return to the second-tier Championship just a season after winning the promotion playoffs.
They go down with Huddersfield Town, who on Saturday became only the second team to be relegated from the Premier League before the end of March.
The third relegation spot is currently occupied by Cardiff City but Burnley, Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion are all just five points above the Welsh side.
Fulham went into the game knowing they had to avoid defeat to extend their battle against the drop but Abdoulaye Doucoure put Watford ahead in the 23rd minute with a superb left-foot strike from the edge of the box after bursting from midfield.
Fulham, who have not won away all season, fought back to score through Ryan Babel 10 minutes later, the Dutchman latching on to a pass from Ryan Sessegnon and rounding keeper Ben Foster before slotting home.
But after Will Hughes restored Watford's lead in the 63rd minute with a thundering volley from the edge of the box, Fulham fell to pieces.
Troy Deeney made it 3-1 with a tap-in six minutes later and Kiko Femenia added the fourth in the 75th to complete Fulham's misery.
Fulham were promoted to the top flight after beating Aston Vila in the playoff final but despite Khan investing an estimated £100 million (S$170 million) in new players, the biggest spend by any promoted club, they struggled from the outset with manager Slavisa Jokanovic sacked in mid-November.
Italian Claudio Ranieri was brought in but failed to turn things around for the West London club and was also sacked, on Feb. 28, with former player Scott Parker taking over.
"Obviously bitterly disappointed, devastated for the football club and fans," Parker told the BBC.
"We always knew it was a tough ask. It's the way we lost the game which was most disappointing for me."
Asked where the season had gone wrong, 38-year-old former England midfielder Parker was reluctant to offer an explanation.
"I think in the initial reaction - I have ideas of (where it went wrong) but it's not the time to broadcast it. When a club gets relegated you know there are some serious issues.
"At this moment in time, I'm not thinking anything. Just pure disappointment," he said.
But Fulham's US defender Tim Ream slammed their approach.
"We haven't shown a togetherness, unity, desire, passion. We've shown it in bits and pieces in the first half then go dead and flat.
"What we do in the match is a product of what we do between Monday to Friday," he said.
