Klopp hails Salah as he targets 97-point total
LONDON • Jurgen Klopp was "blown away" by the brilliance of Mohamed Salah's strike against Chelsea as he urged Liverpool to produce a flawless finish to the English Premier League title race.
The Egypt international struck an astounding goal just two minutes after fellow forward Sadio Mane - his 13th in 16 games - opened the scoring at Anfield as the Reds regained a two-point lead over Manchester City with a 2-0 Premier League victory against Maurizio Sarri's side on Sunday.
While Klopp was thrilled by what he described as a complete team performance, it was Salah's emphatic finish past Kepa Arrizabalaga that left him momentarily speechless.
He said post-game: "I didn't think anything in that moment, but I know I was really happy because I was in line with the ball and maybe I saw first that it would go in.
"It was a really outstanding finish and I don't want to minimise that but I loved the first goal, too. I was immediately reminded of the 4-3 against Borussia Dortmund.
"Hendo (Jordan Henderson) instead of Milly (James Milner) and Sadio instead of Dejan (Lovren), but good team play, good cross, good header. The performance was really good, but you need the goals and we got them."
Salah has 19 league goals, 22 in total, but had been on a barren run by his high standards with one goal in 10 games before he sealed the win against his former club.
Asked about the drought, Klopp said: "The answer in football is always work rate and the work rate of all three up front was outstanding."

Although Liverpool are only four wins from their first league title since 1990 should City slip up in any of their remaining five matches, Klopp has insisted the focus is on finishing the season with 97 points and not on what Pep Guardiola's team produce.
The German added: "The biggest challenge for us is always facing the world outside. We play our game.
"We only try to collect as many points as possible. What is it now, 85? Four games to play, 97. Let's try. If that's enough, then perfect. If not, we cannot change it.
"By the way, on this point, we can finally close the slipping book. Robbo (Andrew Robertson) slipped (during the game) and nothing happened, so it's not a Liverpool thing. Done."
Defender Virgil van Dijk also urged his teammates to take it game by game, despite the red half of Merseyside anticipating they will finally end 29 years of title hurt next month.
He said: "We just focus on our games, we have a massive game next (at Porto) in the Champions League, then to Cardiff which will be tough as well."

Football: Crouch returns to Premier League with Burnley in Vokes swap deal
BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Former England international Peter Crouch returned to the Premier League on Thursday (Jan 31) at the age of 38, signing a short-term contract to join Burnley from Stoke City with Wales striker Sam Vokes heading in the opposite direction.
No financial details of the deals were disclosed, but British media reported that Vokes was valued at around £9 million (S$15 million).
Crouch was part of the Stoke team relegated to the second-tier Championship last season but has not started a game since September.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool forward, whose deal with Burnley runs until the end of the season, has previously played for six Premier League clubs in his career and scored 108 top-flight goals.
He also won 42 caps for England, scoring 22 goals between 2005 and 2010.
Despite his age, Crouch said he still had the ambition to play at the highest level.
"I still want to achieve things," he told Burnley's website.
"I want to get more games and I would love to add to the 100 Premier League goals.
"My game has probably changed a little bit. I'm not 25. But my attributes haven't waned. I never really had blistering pace, so I haven't lost that. I know I can impact games at this level."
Vokes, who waved goodbye to Burnley fans after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, has signed a 3-1/2-year contract at Stoke, having struggled to secure a regular starting place of late at Turf Moor.
The Wales international won two promotions to the Premier League with Burnley in his seven seasons with the club, scoring 62 goals in 258 appearances.
"It's great to have it finally done," he told Stoke's official website . "It has been a long day and a lot of waiting around but I am delighted - I just can't wait to get started now."
The 29-year-old joined Burnley from Wolverhampton Wanderers and was part of the Wales team which reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016.
"Burnley was a huge part of my life, I really found my home there and I made a lot of good friends there, but it was time for me to move on - and what better club to do that with than Stoke City," Vokes added.

Football: Retaining EPL title the 'toughest of my career', says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola
LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Pep Guardiola said Manchester City's 2018/19 Premier League success was the toughest title triumph of his illustrious managerial career.
City came from behind to win 4-1 away to Brighton on the final day of the season on Sunday (May 12) - a result that meant the reigning champions finished just a point in front of second-placed Liverpool, who won 2-0 at home to Wolves.
In most seasons, Liverpool's tally of 97 points would have seen them crowned champions.
Guardiola, celebrating his eighth domestic championship in 10 seasons that have featured Spanish LaLiga and German Bundesliga titles with Barcelona and Bayern Munich respectively, was in no doubt about Liverpool's quality.
"We worked a lot," he said. "I have to say congratulations to Liverpool of course. Thank you so much. They helped to push us and to increase our standards from last season.
"To compete against this team pushed us to do what we have done. It's incredible, 198 points in two seasons."
"I think last season Manchester City made the standards," Guardiola added. "That is the level in the Premier League and Liverpool have helped us to be there all the time."
Â
Guardiola's side secured exactly 100 points in winning the title last season but the manager was arguably even more impressed by their efforts this term, even if the overall tally was lower.
"To win the title, we had to win 14 games in a row," he explained.
"For two to three months, we cannot lose one point and we did it all playing in all competitions until the semi-finals of the Champions League.
"It's incredible. Normally, if you get 100 points the tendency is to go down but Liverpool helped us to be consistent.
"This was the toughest title in all my career."
But Guardiola said next season could be even more competitive.
"It will be tougher, but we will be stronger, too," he said.
"When you can win two in a row I have the feeling that next season we will come back and try to be who we are right now."
Sunday's result meant Liverpool's wait for a maiden Premier League title - their last domestic championship was in 1990 - goes on, although they could yet win the Champions League if they beat Tottenham Hotspur when the English rivals meet in a Madrid final on June 1.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, whose 22 goals this season made him a joint-winner of the Premier League's Golden Boot award, said the Anfield club would challenge again next term.
"We lost only one (Premier League) game all season," the Egypt forward said.
"We gave everything. We got 97 points. We will fight next season for the title."

TURIN, Italy (REUTERS) - Cristiano Ronaldo headed a late equaliser to deny Torino their first win away to neighbours Juventus for 24 years as the two sides drew 1-1 in Serie A on Friday (May 3).
Sasa Lukic stunned the recently-crowned Serie A champions by capitalising on a mistake by Miralem Pjanic to give Torino the lead but the visitors were foiled by one of Ronaldo's trademark headers with six minutes left.
Torino, needing a top-four finish to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, are sixth with 57 points, two behind fourth-placed Atalanta. Juve clinched an eighth successive title two weeks ago.
"Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes and lacked quality with the final pass, otherwise we would probably have won," said Torino coach Walter Mazzarri.
"If you don't score a second goal against these teams, you are unlikely to win - and we were punished by the phenomenon that is Ronaldo."
The match was being played one day before the 70th anniversary of the Superga air disaster which killed 18 Torino players and officials, wiping out the most successful team in the club's history.
Torino last won away to Juventus in 1995 but for over an hour looked as if they could finally end that run against their more glamorous neighbours.
Lukic put them ahead when he dispossessed Pjanic and curled his shot into the net in the 18th minute.
Juventus spent most of the second half lobbing crosses into the penalty area while Torino nearly had a second when Ola Aina broke through the defence only to fire over the bar.
Juve's tactic finally paid off with six minutes left with Leonardo Spinazzola got to the byline and Ronaldo headed in from the cross for his 21st Serie A goal of the season to maintain his side's unbeaten home record in the league.
"It would have been an unfair defeat, we played a good game," said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri.
"Our passing was a little imprecise in the final 20 metres but, in the second half, Torino didn't have any more shots on goal."

Football: Salah penalty sends 'mature' Liverpool seven points clear again
BRIGHTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed his side's maturity as Premier League contenders after breaking down an obdurate Brighton thanks to Mohamed Salah's 50th-minute penalty in a 1-0 win on Saturday (Jan 12).
Klopp's men had lost their last two games in very contrasting fashion as Manchester City inflicted Liverpool's only Premier League defeat of the campaign nine days ago before a much-changed side lost in the FA Cup to Wolves.
Liverpool were far from their fluent best on England's south coast, but ground out a vital win to move seven points clear of City at the top of the table thanks to a 13th clean sheet in 22 league games this season.
"The headline before the game was 'be ready', the headline after the game is 'very mature'," said Klopp.
"It's so important. On the good days everybody can win; on average days not a lot of teams can win football games and, on a bad day, only a few can win.
"Today was not a bad day but it was a difficult day because Brighton is doing really well."
Salah was just one a number of first-team regulars to return from Monday's defeat by Wolves, but the Egyptian and the rest of Liverpool's forward line were starved of service before the break as Brighton sat deep and the visitors dominated possession without any cutting edge.
"It was very hard but that is how it is," added Klopp.
"I liked the performance. It wasn't an opera of football but it was a really nice song."
Salah immediately signalled a change in Liverpool's intent after half-time as his powerful shot at the end of a purposeful run was well saved by David Button.
Brighton, though, were architects of their own downfall moments later. Salah was given too much room inside the area to turn and Pascal Gross then hauled down last season's Premier League player of the year.
"I feel for Pascal because Mo Salah is probably the most dangerous player once he gets in those positions one on one," said Brighton boss Chris Hughton, who had no complaints over the penalty award.
Salah stepped up to blast the penalty past Button and move level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the league's top-scorer on 14 goals for the season.
One moment of madness from Gross undid Hughton's gameplan to defend and frustrate the league leaders.
Yet, the German midfielder had a chance to make amends almost immediately with Brighton's best opportunity to level, but his shot was bravely blocked by Fabinho.
From then on Liverpool looked more likely to add to their lead than concede as Firmino's fierce strike from outside the box was placed too close to Button before Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane fired wide.
Salah passed up a glorious chance two minutes from time when he turned James Milner's driven cross wide from point-blank range.
That could have proved costly when Florin Andone escaped in behind the Liverpool defence in stoppage time, but his low cross found no takers.
And Liverpool held out to ensure a largely forgettable 90 minutes could be remembered as another important step on course to the title come May.

Football: We might need 105 points to win EPL title, says Liverpool boss Klopp
WOLVERHAMPTON (REUTERS) - Jurgen Klopp said his Liverpool side may need to surpass Manchester City's record points total to win the Premier League after a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday (Dec 21) guaranteed them top spot at Christmas.
Goals by Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk were enough to take Liverpool four points clear of champions Manchester City who face Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Liverpool, who have topped the Premier League table on three previous occasions without winning the title, have 48 points from 18 games and only two teams - Chelsea in 2005-06 and City last season - have had more points at that stage.
City won the title last season with a record 100 points but such has been the pace at the top this season that Klopp believes even more might be needed this time.
"Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league, but was it ever such a tight race?" Klopp said.
"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.
"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win, then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points from one down to five.
"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know!" he added.
Tottenham Hotspur, in third place, have 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea are on 37 before their home clash with Leicester City.
Liverpool's title challenge has been built on a rock-solid defence which has been breached only seven times in the League so far this season with Van Dijk outstanding.
The Dutchman even proved effective at the other end of the pitch on a rainy night in the Midlands as he scored his first Premier League goal to double Liverpool's lead.
"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," Van Dijk said.
"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I'm more focused on winning games."

Football: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named permanent Manchester United manager on 3-year deal
LONDON (REUTERS, AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Manchester United have appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager on a three-year contract, the English Premier League club said in a statement on their website on Thursday (March 28).
The 46-year-old Norwegian, the hero of the club's Champions League final win against Bayern Munich in 1999, has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions as caretaker boss since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
“From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club,†Solskjaer said in the statement.
“It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here.
“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve.â€
United have won 10 of their 13 Premier League games under Solskjaer and reached the Champions League quarter-finals with a dramatic victory at French champions Paris St-Germain.
Several members of the first-team squad, including record signing Paul Pogba, have praised him for restoring the confidence and freedom the team lacked towards the end of Mourinho’s tenure.
Â
Â
Â
Â
“More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club,†said Ed Woodward, United’s executive vice-chairman.
“This all means that he is the right person to take Manchester United forward. I want to thank Ole and the coaching team for everything they have done so far and congratulate him on this richly deserved appointment.â€
Fifth-placed United, who are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification spots with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, host Watford in the league on Saturday.
Solskjaer’s former United teammate Peter Schmeichel tweeted: “Congratulations my friend, it is well deserved. Up and onwards let’s chase some trophies.â€
Former United defender Gary Neville welcomed the appointment and urged the club to back the new full-time boss financially.
“I’m delighted for Ole,†he tweeted. “I didn’t think this would happen when he was appointed. However the results and spirit in the club have been incredible since he arrived and he deserves it. He now needs support in the transfer market in terms of finance and the right resource!â€
Another former United teammate of Solskjaer’s, Rio Ferdinand, tweeted: “Yessss Ole is officially at The Wheel... Signed, Sealed, Delivered! Manager of @ManUtd! I hope my Thank You is in post Ole.â€

'Never satisfied' Pep urges focus for FA Cup final
LONDON • More than £500 million (S$889.5 million) have been lavished on Manchester City, the most expensive squad assembled in Premier League history.
But it requires so much more than money to build a team of this extraordinary calibre, starting with a rare vision built on mastery of ball possession and the obsessiveness to bring it to life week after week.
Manchester United have shown that you can pour millions down the drain, or into Alexis Sanchez's bank account, and get nowhere without a strategy.
Only "special, special managers" can retain the league title - so many great coaches have failed to achieve it, including former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.
But, after City became the first side to retain the league crown since Alex Ferguson did so with United a decade ago, Pep Guardiola challenged his players to keep quenching his thirst for silverware.
His team matched their record total of 32 wins from last season and accrued a total of 98 points, the second highest in league history behind the 100-point tally they achieved last year.
Guardiola is more concerned with trophies than records, however, urging his players to retain their focus for Saturday's FA Cup final against Watford. The Spaniard is fully aware that City, who won the League Cup in February, are on the verge of an unprecedented domestic treble.
He said: "We're so tired but, at the same time, winning is so addictive and, in a few days, we have the FA Cup final. It will be, for most of us, the first time in our lives we have been in an FA Cup final.
"No team in England has done (the domestic treble) before and we have the chance to it. We have to be focused in this game. The FA Cup is not an easy title to achieve."
While the City boss, who has now lifted four major trophies since joining in 2016, is expecting to face a challenge from more than one rival next term, he has plans to recruit new players in a bid to win the league title three straight times - a feat only achieved by Ferguson.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri is reportedly at the top of his wish list, while Leicester defender Ben Chilwell is also of interest.
The 48-year-old said: "The big competitors are never satisfied. The feeling is never enough. In tennis, basketball and golf, they want more and more, and that is why winning back-to-back showed me this kind of thing that it was not enough, what they have done.
"We have to make the right decisions for next season to come back stronger, because Liverpool will maintain it and the other ones will be better.
"United must come back, Chelsea one more year with (Maurizio) Sarri will be better, Tottenham, we have seen in the Champions League and, when Arsenal do what they have to do, they will be there, too. We accept the challenge and I promise you we will be stronger."
However, whether Vincent Kompany - whose contract is up in the summer - stays is still up in the air.
The City captain, though, revealed Guardiola "starts everything off" and his "desire" from day one had transmitted to the rest of the players, giving them the confidence they "could win back-to-back titles straight away".

Ronaldo allays fears about hamstring injury in 1-1 draw
LISBON • Cristiano Ronaldo has played down the hamstring injury he suffered during Portugal's 1-1 Euro 2020 qualifying draw with Serbia, which could leave him facing a fitness race for the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
The star forward was forced off in the first half as his team stumbled to their second straight draw in Group B to leave them in third spot behind Ukraine and Luxembourg.
Danilo Pereira equalised for the home team after Dusan Tadic had opened the scoring for the visitors.
However, the 34-year-old sought to allay fears he will not be able to travel to Amsterdam, where Juventus will play the first leg of their quarter-final tie against Ajax on April 10.
The seven-time defending Italian champions smashed their transfer record to sign Ronaldo from Real Madrid in a €100 million (S$152.7 million) move last summer, with the aim of ending their 23-year European Cup drought.
Telling reporters he would "know more in 24 or 48 hours", the Portugal captain said: "I'm not worried, I know my body. It happens, it's football. If you go out in the rain, you get wet... I'm calm, I'll be back in one or two weeks."
Portugal struggled to breach Serbia's defence in his absence, although the hosts should have been awarded a penalty in the second half after defender Antonio Rukavina had handled the ball from Andre Silva's header.
Post-game, Ronaldo and coach Fernando Santos both said Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, who initially pointed to the spot, had apologised for overturning the decision.
Ronaldo said: "It was very clear, the referee should have given it. The linesman was 40 metres away, so it seems a bit strange."
Santos added: "We saw the incident in the dressing room afterwards, and neither we nor he (Marciniak) had any doubt, it was a penalty."
He also told Portuguese TV channel RTP: "He had no doubt, but that honesty does not help me. He gave a penalty... no one 40 metres away can make the decision it was not, especially when the referee saw it clearly.
"What will I do with the excuse? At least he called me to analyse. The assistant was there and I said that it was his fault."

Kovac's Bayern job safe: Rummenigge
BERLIN • Bayern Munich chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has all but confirmed Niko Kovac's position was safe after the Bundesliga champions secured the domestic double with a 3-0 victory over RB Leipzig in the German Cup final on Saturday.
The Bayern coach has fought off relentless criticism in his first year in charge of the Bavarian giants, as well as rumours that he would be sacked even if the club did win the league and Cup double.
But their emphatic win over Leipzig appeared to end speculation over the Croat's future, as home fans chanted his name before kick-off and after the final whistle.
Rummenigge, who was considered one of Kovac's strongest boardroom critics this season, also told German broadcaster ARD that parting company with 47-year-old was "never an issue".
He said: "We never questioned whether he would be here next season, that was never a topic for us. At the end of the day, trophies are what is expected at Bayern. The coach plays a central role here."
The German added that while it had been a "curious" term, with the team undergoing several rocky patches during the year and were also convincingly knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 by Liverpool.
However, having played "amazingly" at the Olympiastadion for their 12th double and 19th Cup, the victory was a final vindication for Kovac, whose team overcame a nine-point deficit from rivals Borussia Dortmund to lift the Bundesliga title for a seventh straight time.
Admitting he knew "how difficult the job is", the former Eintracht Frankfurt coach, who paid tribute to the travelling support with a loudspeaker at the full-time whistle, told ARD: "I had to stay calm. Trophies are important.

"Last year, I cried because I was leaving the club (Eintracht). This year, it was a bit less emotional but the emotions are always there."
Kovac is now the first coach to have won the Cup in two successive seasons with two different clubs, having beaten Bayern with his former team in last year's final.
Robert Lewandowski's brace and a late strike from Kingsley Coman sealed the victory and, afterwards, the Poland striker dedicated the trophy to long-serving teammates Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.
The duo will be departing the Allianz Arena in the summer on a free transfer, and Lewandowski told ARD that "they have done so much for the club and we have to thank them".

Football: Arsenal bounce back to rout feeble Fulham 4-1
LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal responded to their thrashing by Liverpool in the best possible manner reeling off a routine 4-1 humbling of struggling Fulham in their Premier League clash on Tuesday (Jan 1).
Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka had set Arsenal on their way with his fourth goal of the season. Alexandre Lacazette added the second after 55 minutes with their momentum temporarily halted as Aboubakar Kamara pulled one back after 69 minutes.
However, Welshman Aaron Ramsey came off the bench to make it 3-1 eleven minutes from time and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added a fourth.
Arsenal have yet to keep a clean sheet since beating Huddersfield Town on December 8, but a second win in six matches saw them move on to 41 points two points off the Champions League places.
Fulham have shown little sign of a recovery under Claudio Ranieri since he took over from the sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and are second from bottom.
The visitors did have their chances early on to break the deadlock.
First Fulham captain Tom Cairney sent Ryan Sessegnon clear of defenders with the simplest of passes only for the England under-21 star to sidefoot his shot wide of Bernd Leno's goal.
Then Andre Schurrle hit a dangerous low cross from the left and Sessegnon ran in behind Sead Kolasinac only to miskick with the goal at his mercy.
Fulham paid dearly for that miss in the 25th minute as Arsenal exposed the defensive frailties that have blighted their season.
Alex Iwobi spotted Xhaka advancing unmarked into the penalty area and flighted the ball into his path.
The midfielder had all the time he needed to control the ball and poke it past Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico.
Arsenal relaxed and created a series of chances, Xhaka and Sokratis having shots blocked, Aubameyang heading wide and Lacazette seeing a shot hit Rico's trailing leg.
A second goal arrived ten minutes into the second half.
It was Arsenal at their intricate, quick-passing best.
Iwobi, on the left, touched the ball forward to Aubameyang, who saw Kolasinac advancing inside him and rolled it into his path. The defender unselfishly squared for Lacazette to hit the ball past Rico from ten yards.
Kamara briefly gave Fulham hope when he made amends for Saturday's controversial penalty miss at home to Huddersfield - he had insisted on taking the spot kick himself - by arriving at the far post to convert Sessegnon's low cross.
The Gunners, though, put the game to bed 11 minutes from time.
Matteo Guendouzi and Kolasinac opened Fulham up down the left, Aubameyang smacked Kolasinac's low cross against the post and the rebound fell to Ramsey, who shot high past Rico's left hand.
Aubameyang made it 4-1 after 83 minutes when Fulham failed dismally to clear a corner and the Gabon striker's shot was deflected over Rico by Tim Ream's attempt to block.

Football: Man United to open 'experience centres' in China
LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United announced on Tuesday (Jan 8) they are opening a series of "entertainment and experience centres" in China as they seek to capitalise on a huge fanbase in the world's most populous country.
The first centres, developed in partnership with Chinese property developer Harves, are scheduled to open in Beijing ,Shanghai and Shenyang by the end of 2020.
Arsenal last year opened a club-themed sports bar and restaurant in Shanghai and French side Paris Saint-Germain also have a hub in the same city, equipped with indoor football pitches and a bar.
Each venue at the Manchester United centres will feature "interactive and immersive experiences" and will include restaurants and a club store, the Premier League club said in a statement.
"We first visited China in 1975 and we're proud to have seen our fan base in the region grow and develop their passion for United over the years," said Manchester United's group managing director Richard Arnold.
"This new concept will allow them to get closer to the club they love."
China has become an important pre-season destination for European clubs, competing with the United States to draw top teams.
United said last year they had more than 107 million followers in China, describing the country as one of the club's most important markets.
The 20-time English champions built an enormous global fanbase during the 1990s and 2000s, a period in which they dominated the Premier League.

Starting this blog has been an adventure. I have never been so intimately linked with a football club and its fortunes. There were certainly many ups and downs, thrills and spills. The Good. Gaining an understanding of the Club. Through my limited interaction with the Club's staff, i gained a minor insight about how running a football club works.

Football: Kedah-bound national defender Shakir Hamzah
Starting this blog has been an adventure. I have never been so intimately linked with a football club and its fortunes. There were certainly many ups and downs, thrills and spills. The Good. Gaining an understanding of the Club. Through my limited interaction with the Club's staff, i gained a minor insight about how running a football club works.

There is nothing new that we can learn about the life of Muhammad. No archaeological find can add to our knowledge. No lost record or forgotten document is expected to come to light which can tell us more about events and actions already known to history. All that remains is to interpret, and here is another attempt at interpretation. Page 7

Tricky tie, but City can fend off Wolves
Tricky tie, but City can fend off Wolves
LONDON • Pep Guardiola's revitalised Manchester City face a potentially tricky challenge at home to Wolves today (tomorrow morning Singapore time) as they attempt to cut the deficit to Premier League leaders Liverpool to four points.
However, City have shown enough just two weeks into the new year to suggest that their uncharacteristic collapse in form last month is firmly behind them.
The English champions' slump was triggered after Chelsea ended their unbeaten streak in the league and they subsequently lost successive league games, against relatively modest opposition in both Crystal Palace and Leicester.
But a victory over the Reds to kick off the second half of the term has completely rejuvenated the mood at the Etihad Stadium.
Since then, two Cup routs in the space of four days - albeit against lower league clubs Rotherham and Burton - have indicated the return of the clinical edge that characterised their play during last season's record-breaking campaign.
It was a mood reflected by Kevin de Bruyne, who has been injured for most of the first half of their campaign, against Rotherham when he showed visible dissatisfaction at being brought off after an hour, even though City were already leading by five goals.
While media reports have hinted at his anger, with de Bruyne reportedly refusing to return to the bench to watch the remainder of their FA Cup third-round 7-0 win, instead opting to head straight down the tunnel, Guardiola refused to address the speculation, claiming he "did not speak with him" over the Belgium forward's reaction.
Despite his petulance, de Bruyne remains in line to start just his second league game of the term when City take on Wolves.
Sergio Aguero and captain Vincent Kompany, who have not played since the Liverpool match, look set to return to the first XI, and Guardiola confirmed his team had a clean bill of health as "the rest (except for Benjamin Mendy) are fit".
The Spaniard also felt City could maintain their chase for honours on four fronts even though they are unlikely to reinforce by dipping into the January transfer market.
He said: "Sometimes, we have done it but, normally, when you want to buy one player, it is for the next five or six years and, normally, it doesn't happen in this window.
"The big clubs don't buy important players for six months. If you don't have injuries and are satisfied with the squad, you go with them."
Despite declaring his happiness with his players, he warned that Wolves would be no pushovers and they had no margin for error.
Recalling how Nuno Espirito Santo's men held City to a creditable 1-1 league draw earlier in the season at Molineux, he added: "They are strong physically, (at) counter-attack, set-pieces. They defend well, deep, they control many areas (through Joao) Moutinho.
"(Ruben) Neves, he can shoot from a long way. They are newly promoted and doing incredibly well."

Football: Guardiola dismisses Klopp's claim that Man City have no weaknesses
MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola on Friday (Dec 21) dismissed Jurgen Klopp's suggestion that Manchester City are a team with no sign of weakness as the two battle for the Premier League title.
Guardiola's City and Klopp's Liverpool appear increasingly to be the two main contenders in the title race, as the season approaches its halfway point.
With few slip-ups from either side, their meeting at the Etihad Stadium on Jan 3 looks a potentially significant moment in the battle for first place - a position held by unbeaten Liverpool going into the weekend's fixtures.
Yet Klopp claimed this week that the only team that can stop Guardiola's men from defending their title are City themselves.
Guardiola, though, says his team are fallible and can point to the fact that they lost their season's unbeaten league record at Chelsea this month as proof.
"Any team has strong points and weak points," said the City manager.
"Of course we have weaknesses. We are working on it, but that's normal. These kind of comments have to be put in perspective."
Guardiola's side, who are at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday, were a point off the top of the table before Liverpool went to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday.
Palace are 15th in the Premier League and have collected just one point from their past six away matches. Yet they have started to climb away from the relegation zone after home wins over Burnley and Leicester.
Palace have lost on all their seven visits to the Etihad and have suffered defeat in each of their past nine away games against City, a run going back to the days of Maine Road.
Palace, though, did end City's run of 18 consecutive league wins on Dec 31 last season with a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park, and might have won had goalkeeper Ederson not saved an injury-time penalty from Luka Milivojevic.
Roy Hodgson's side deserved he goalless draw they earned on their previous visit to Manchester, against United at Old Trafford on Nov 24, and Guardiola is wary of players such as Wilfried Zaha, Max Meyer, Andros Townsend and Milivojevic.
"They have quality players in Zaha, Townsend, Meyer, Milivojevic," he said.
"They have an incredible experienced manager. I saw the game against Chelsea (on Nov 4, when Palace lost 3-1), and it was so difficult to attack them.
"After winning 18 games in a row, you have to draw once eventually, that's normal. We played decent in the first half that day. But in the second half they were much better and missed a penalty.
"Palace bring worries because of the qualities they have. They know what they have to do. Maybe people expect better results from them than they got but in every game they have more chances.
"Winning against them is complicated, and tomorrow it will happen like this (and be difficult for us) if we are not completely focused."
Playmaker David Silva is back in training as he recovers from the hamstring injury he suffered against Chelsea but will not be available to face Palace.
Centre-back Vincent Kompany will be absent with a muscular problem but Kevin De Bruyne could make his first league start of the season, having played and scored in Wednesday's League Cup win at Leicester after recovering from two knee injuries.
Sergio Aguero, who started the Leicester match after coming back from a groin problem, will compete for a place in attack with Gabriel Jesus.

Albirex Niigata v Brunei DPMM Jurong East, 8.30pm
First versus third in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) tonight at the Jurong East Stadium, and both sides will be counting on the two most in-form players in the league to sparkle again.
Leaders Brunei DPMM will rely on Australian midfielder Blake Ricciuto, winner of the player and goal of the month awards for April, while Albirex will turn to 23-year-old playmaker Kyoga Nakamura, named the best young player.
Their individual brilliance might well be needed given that their March 15 game was a tight affair that ended goal-less after DPMM's Najib Tarif was sent off early in the second half.
Both coaches have their opposing danger men well-scouted.
Said Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi: "(Ricciuto) is a good player. His strengths are his height and strength, and he has good momentum, too."
The 1.80m, 81kg Ricciuto has six goals in 10 games this season, with five coming in the last six matches.
DPMM coach Adrian Pennock hailed his star for his boundless stamina.
Â
"He has fantastic energy and, for a central midfielder, he really gets around the pitch," said the English coach of the 26-year-old, who last played for New South Wales-based semi-professional side Rockdale City Suns.
"The other thing is his character. He has a very good head on his shoulders and that's very important coming into a new country, new league and new culture.
"I didn't want my import players to take 10 games to settle. By then, it'd be nearly half the season gone. That Blake is scoring goals and looking very dangerous hasn't surprised me."
Ricciuto's goals have helped DPMM to an unbeaten start, picking up 26 points in 10 games. Albirex have 17 points in nine games.
Former Stoke City assistant manager Pennock noted that Albirex have their own goalscoring midfield star.
Nakamura, who played for Japan in the Under-17 World Cup in 2013, scored the first and last goals in a 4-0 win over Home United, before scoring both goals in a 2-0 win over Geylang International. He last played in Japan's third-tier J3 league with YSCC Yokohama.
"He's a lovely footballer, and I like watching him," said Pennock. "His balance is very good, he's got a wonderful left foot, and he's one of the best players in the league.
"Obviously, he's a danger, but there are 10 other players we have to worry about as well because Albirex are a very good side."
Shigetomi believes there is more to come from his skipper, saying: "He is still getting used to the physical demands of the SPL."
Pennock is still confident despite missing four players - the trio of Nur Ikhwan Othman, Azwan Ali, and Abdul Azizi Ali are suspended, while Hendra Azam remained in Brunei for the birth of his child.
He said: "It's not the end of the world if we lose, and there are still a lot of games to play. We've put ourselves in a good position and the most important thing is for the boys to show up and perform."
