Football: Liverpool recover from shaky start to beat Palace 4-3

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Premier League leaders Liverpool recovered from a poor first-half display as they came from behind to beat an impressive Crystal Palace 4-3 in an enthralling clash at Anfield on Saturday (Jan 19).
The win, secured by late goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, moves Juergen Klopp's side a provisional seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who face bottom club Huddersfield Town on Sunday.
Palace won at City last month and at times looked as though they could produce another upset but while this was far from vintage Liverpool their prolific strikers helped them avoid a slip-up.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, two Liverpool goals inside the opening eight minutes of the second half changed the momentum of the match.
"The result is massive, we have 60 points now, it's crazy, it's an important number," said Klopp.
"I'm really proud, a few things happened that we don't really need, we're a bit short now on players but we have a few days and need to use the time now for recovery."
Palace, the last team to win at Anfield in the league back in April, 2017, took a shock 34th minute lead, against the run of play, when Andros Townsend slotted home a fine pull-back from Wilfried Zaha.
Liverpool equalised 47 seconds after the interval when the ball looped high into the area where Salah skilfully converted with the outside of his left foot after Virgil van Dijk's long-range effort was blocked.

LIVERPOOL BUZZING

Suddenly Liverpool were buzzing and it was no surprise when Brazilian Roberto Firmino put them ahead, collecting a pass from Naby Keita and beating veteran Palace keeper Julian Speroni with a slightly deflected low shot.
But the visitors were not about to roll over and they fought back to level at 2-2 in the 65th when James Tomkins was left unattended to head in a Luka Milivojevic corner.

Speroni, Palace's 39-year-old third-choice, then gifted Liverpool a goal when his one-handed waft at a harmless-looking James Milner cross fell for Salah to tap in after 75 minutes.
Salah now has 50 goals in his 72 Premier League appearances and is the current top scorer in the league with 16.
Milner was sent off in the 89th for a second yellow card after a late challenge on Zaha before Mane added the fourth for the hosts with a solo strike in stoppage time.
There was still time for Palace to strike again with Max Meyer beating Alisson Becker with a low shot which the Brazilian keeper would have expected to save.
Liverpool's back line then handled some late pressure from Palace to seal the three points.

MASSIVE RELIEF

"It's a massive relief," said Klopp.
"We knew for different reasons the game would be difficult. Crystal Palace traditionally do well against Liverpool and with the physicality it was clear it would be like the first half was.
"We had to stay positive, being one down is not a massive blow, we just needed to win the second half and did what we had to do," he added.
Hodgson, whose side are hovering just above the relegation zone despite excellent performances against some of the top clubs, said he felt a mixture of pride and disappointment.
"I'm very proud of the team. You know they have extremely good players, you know it will be a hard task and it will require a lot of discipline and we did well to come back to 2-2 and 4-3 at the end after conceding a very unfair goal.
"You need character and personality and good team spirit, people prepared to stick to the game plan even when it's not going your way.
"We knew if we deviated from the plan we could find it very difficult but we stuck to our way of playing and really I should be stood here congratulating the lads on getting something out if it," added the former Liverpool and England manager."

Football: Man City blast 'false accusations' as Uefa opens spending rules probe

ZURICH (AFP) - Uefa on Thursday (March 7) announced they were opening an investigation into whether or not Manchester City broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, a breach that could lead to a devastating Champions League ban.
However, English champions City insisted the accusations against them are false and that they welcomed the opportunity to clear their name.
German magazine Der Spiegel, using material purportedly obtained from the whistleblowing outlet Football Leaks, alleged in November that City had set up sponsorship deals to circumvent regulations limiting how much money owners can put into a club.
"The Investigatory Chamber of the independent Uefa Club Financial Control Body has today opened a formal investigation into Manchester City FC for potential breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations," said a Uefa statement on Thursday.
"The investigation will focus on several alleged violations of FFP that were recently made public in various media outlets."
City responded immediately by saying they supported the investigation and that they had nothing to hide.
"Manchester City welcomes the opening of a formal Uefa investigation as an opportunity to bring to an end the speculation resulting from the illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails," the club said in a statement.
"The accusation of financial irregularities are entirely false. The club's published accounts are full and complete and a matter of legal and regulatory record."

City had earlier responded to Der Spiegel's claims by saying there had been an "organised and clear" attempt to damage the club's reputation.
A ban from Uefa competitions, including the Champions League, is a potential punishment if City are found guilty of FFP breaches.
City were fined €60 million (S$90 million) and subjected to squad, wage and spending caps in a 2014 settlement agreed with Uefa following a previous breach of the rules.
City coach Pep Guardiola has always insisted that City would accept a ban but does not believe it is likely after discussions with the club's UAE owners.

QUESTIONS FOR PSG, MILAN

"We will not be banned, no. That's what I think because I trust in my chairman, with my CEO, what they have explained to me," he said.
"If it happens, because Uefa decide that, we will accept it and move forward."
City are not the only European heavyweight to be caught up in claims of breaking financial fair play rules.
French champions Paris Saint-Germain quashed reports they could be forced to sell either Kylian Mbappe or Neymar in a bid to circumvent eventual FFP sanctions.
Qatar-owned PSG, who splashed a combined total of more than €400 million in 2017 for Brazil star Neymar and France World Cup winner Mbappe, blasted allegations as "totally false and ridiculous".
Former European champions AC Milan were warned in December that they risk being excluded from European competition if they fail to "break even".
Milan had already been banned for a year from the Europa League due to breaching FFP regulations before winning an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last year.
But Uefa said the former seven-time European champions again face suspension from continental competition in future seasons "should the club not be break-even compliant at 30 June 2021".

Reds' date with destiny in 'final'

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp claimed destiny will decide whether Liverpool win the Premier League, after Divock Origi's "fairy-tale" winner at Newcastle ensured the title race will go to the final day of the season.
Despite losing Mohamed Salah to a head knock in the second half, his replacement headed home Xherdan Shaqiri's free kick for a 3-2 away victory. It enabled the Reds to regain a two-point lead over Manchester City with one game left.
Afterwards, Klopp said his players had done their part in a bid to end a 29-year English title drought by "qualifying for our final on Sunday against Wolves".
He said: "What can I say? It's just brilliant. That was really a big moment. I accepted long ago that we will do everything, absolutely everything, and the boys will throw whatever they have on the pitch.
"We do everything, we cannot do more. Can you get more than 94 points? Not really. The boys tried everything, even when we had the draws, they tried everything to win.
"The boys showed in each second that they really want to win it. We knew what we had to do and the boys did it in a very difficult game.
"Credit to Newcastle. Wow. If people doubt the teams that don't play for anything any more, that they are halfway on the beach already, that was the opposite."

  • Liverpool's Premier League goals by substitutes this season, more than any other team.

With Barcelona visiting Anfield tomorrow for the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, the manager had a difficult balancing act to strike, making four changes to the side that lost 3-0 at the Nou Camp last week.
Trent Alexander-Arnold was one of those recalled and he was to have an eventful evening at both ends, adding two assists to take his season's tally to 11, the same as Andy Robertson on the opposite flank.
His corner found Virgil van Dijk completely unmarked to open the scoring for his fifth goal of the term.
But Newcastle levelled with their first serious attack after Salomon Rondon's shot was saved on the line by Alexander-Arnold's arm, only for Christian Atsu to put the rebound away.
After surviving Ayoze Perez's strike that smashed off the crossbar, Liverpool took a 2-1 lead into the break with Salah's cushioned finish off Alexander-Arnold's cross.
Rondon equalised early in the second half and the game looked set for a draw - until Origi came to the rescue, just as he did with a late winner against Everton in December.
The blot on a thrilling night at St James' Park was confirmation that one of their "Fab Three", Roberto Firmino, would miss the Barcelona clash with a groin injury.
Klopp, though, was more hopeful over Salah's availability, adding: "Mo got the hip of the goalie in his head and then was on the ground.
"When we came in (after), he was sitting in the dressing room and had watched the game.
"He was then fine but, of course, we have to wait. He got a proper knock in that situation."
Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez could have taken charge of Newcastle for the last time at home.
The Spaniard's contract runs out this summer and his four seasons at the club have been clouded by a frosty relationship with owner Mike Ashley.
He said: "It is so simple, you can see the potential. I am really proud and pleased we stayed up, but I would like to do something more."

Emery Gunning for signings

Emery Gunning for signings

LONDON • Unai Emery was pleased with the "progress and passion" of his young attackers after Arsenal's 3-0 FA Cup third-round victory against Blackpool on Saturday, but he also made no secret of his intention to bring in reinforcements during January's transfer window.
The Gunners cruised to victory with teenager Joe Willock scoring twice - becoming the youngest Arsenal player to score in an FA Cup tie since Aaron Ramsey in 2010 - before Alex Iwobi added gloss to the scoreline.
"I think the club is working on the possibility to take some players who can help us during these next four months," said Emery.
"Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position."
Arsenal are reportedly in negotiations with Barcelona over the signing of 24-year-old midfielder Denis Suarez who played for Emery at Sevilla during the 2014-15 season.
Suarez, who spent two years at Manchester City as an academy player between 2011 and 2013, has played 46 league matches for Barcelona in 21/2 seasons but has never been able to hold down a regular starting place.

SHOPPING LIST
Maybe the transfer market can help us with a centre back, but it is not easy because also (Konstantinos) Mavropanos is coming back after injury. Also a winger, right or left, one player can help us in this position.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is clear which positions he wants to reinforce.

The Spaniard, who has one international cap, won in 2016, is under contract with Barcelona until 2020 and would cost around £20 million (S$34.6 million).
Asked whether he saw Suarez as a winger, Emery added: "He was playing in his career, and with me also, as a right or left winger."
Emery retained only four players in the starting line-up from the 4-1 Premier League victory over Fulham on New Year's Day, and it was the young attackers who shone, with Willock ably supported by fellow 19-year-olds Eddie Nketiah and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
Emery said: "We need players with commitment. We need players who are prepared when the team needs them and can step up. We mixed experienced players in the squad with some young players like Joe, Eddie and Ainsley.
"It was a good combination. They showed us they are progressing with the team and, mostly importantly, they showed their passion."
Willock's day could have been even better but a linesman's flag ruled out a hat-trick goal.
"The linesman crushed my dreams with the hat-trick, but that's football and, hopefully, I can get another opportunity soon. Hopefully, the boss keeps believing in me," said the midfielder.
Arsenal's team bus was briefly delayed on their way to the match after a Blackpool fan climbed onto its roof in protest at the Lancashire seaside club's owners.
The fan was photographed sitting on top of the coach at Arsenal's team hotel shortly before the London side were to depart for the match at Bloomfield Road.
Supporters of third-tier Blackpool have regularly protested against club owner Owen Oyston and many are boycotting home games with gates averaging only 4,129 at their 17,000-seater ground which hosted Premier League football in 2010-11.
The man was eventually arrested and the Arsenal team arrived in good time for kick-off.
Asked if the incident had affected their preparations, Emery said: "There was no change for us. We prepared as usual and I am proud of our work today.
"We had big commitment, good concentration, we were competitive and we imposed our quality little by little."

Football: Valladolid players paid to lose game to Valencia on final day of La Liga, says judge

(THE GUARDIAN) - The final-day La Liga victory against Valladolid that secured Valencia's place in the Champions League was prearranged by a criminal gang and up to seven players from the losing side, according to remarks from the judge investigating match-fixing in Spain.
Wire taps carried out by police over the past six months, following suspicions raised by a second division game between Huesca and Gimnastic de Tarragona at the end of the 2017-18 season, have now allegedly caught the former footballer Carlos Aranda, suspected of being the leader of the conspiracy, outlining the result required and claiming that seven players had been bought.
According to extracts of the investigation which were published in the newspaper El Mundo, the former Real Madrid and Leeds United defender Raúl Bravo, accused of organising match-fixing with Aranda, met the Valladolid captain Borja Fernández in a bar during the build-up to the final game of the season.
Fernández then set up a meeting with a number of players. In one of the recordings, Aranda can allegedly be heard saying: "Look brother, Valencia have to win the first half and in the second, OK?"
Valencia won 2-0, with a goal in each half. Valladolid had secured survival the week before, while Valencia needed to win to take the final Champions League place.
Their 2-0 victory denied Getafe the chance to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history. There is no suggestion that Valencia, owned by Singapore billionaire Peter Lim, were involved in the conspiracy in any way or were aware of it.
Prosecutors believe that this was driven by gambling, not the interests of the clubs. The initial investigation began when the league alerted to suspicious betting patterns at the end of last season in the second division; now the investigation has expanded to include this highly significant first-division match.
In one of the recordings, according to El Mundo, Aranda is heard telling someone: "No one can find out about this and no one means no one, eh. Not your friends, no one."
That same day, wire taps are said to reveal that he called the bookmakers he owns in Málaga and said: "Bet €10,000 (S$15,420) and you'll take €20,000."

He and Bravo were among those arrested last week, accused of leading the criminal gang. They were released on bail having been in jail in Zuera, Zaragoza province.
Fernández was also arrested. All three have denied any wrongdoing.
Borja's representatives put out a statement saying that the player does not even bet and his agent, Gustavo Mateos, told Radio Marca: "He has no doubt about his honour but he is worried. He has asked me to tell the people of Valladolid not to doubt him, that they (can) trust in their captain. Everything will be cleared up. He is sunk. He answered every question: he is the person most interested in finding out what has happened."
When Aranda was released from prison, he said: "In the end, they have put in (prison) those who have the least guilt. I would like to thank the people from the jail, the people from Zaragoza in prison and Huesca. We don't know why (we're here). That's why we came, because we don't know (why) and nor do they."
Bravo said: "Thanks to the local police, the national police, civil guard, judge and fiscal because the truth is that the treatment has been spectacular from the start, they have treated us very well and I can't say anything more. At trial, who is guilty and who is not will be seen."

(REUTERS) - Goals from Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min helped Tottenham Hotspur overcome Leicester City 3-1 in an entertaining Premier League match at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Feb 10).
Tottenham went ahead through Sanchez who scored his first goal for the London club by meeting Eriksen’s whipped cross with a diving header in the 33rd minute, although Leicester’s players complained he was in an offside position.
Leicester missed the chance to equalise on the hour mark when substitute Jamie Vardy’s penalty – his first touch after coming on – was pushed away by Hugo Lloris after Jan Vertonghen was adjudged to have fouled James Maddison in the box.
“Lloris saved us a few times and we were lucky that he took out the penalty which gave us confidence. You felt that in the whole stadium, and we’re happy to have Hugo,” Eriksen said.
Tottenham doubled their lead three minutes later as Eriksen collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a fierce shot past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.  Vardy made up for his earlier miss by tapping in from close range 14 minutes from the final whistle after a well worked move allowed Ricardo Pereira to drill in a cross from the right.
After a sustained period of Leicester pressure, Son settled nerves of the home supporters by slotting in Tottenham’s third with a solo run from the halfway line.  Victory took title contenders Tottenham to 60 points from 26 matches, five points behind leaders Liverpool and two adrift of champions Manchester City who play Chelsea later on Sunday.
Eriksen said Tottenham had showed plenty of character to see off a determined Leicester, a quality that could help them in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg clash against Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund.
“We didn’t make life easy for ourselves,” the Dane said. “The last three games we won in the last 10 minutes, which shows the character of the team and we did that again today. It’s going to be the same on Wednesday.”
Tottenham had a first-half penalty claim denied after Harry Maguire appeared to bring down Son with the referee booking the South Korean for simulation, a decision manager Mauricio Pochettino described as “unbelievable”.
“When you compare the situation with the penalty for Leicester, unbelievable... I’m more relaxed because we won,” Pochettino added.  “Do you think that we’re a team trying to cheat a referee? Come on, we’re one of the nicest teams on the pitch.”
Leicester boss Claude Puel bemoaned his side’s finishing.
“Throughout the game we had a feeling we can score... we had chances and half chances,” the Frenchman said. “It’s difficult to accept with all the good intention to go without the reward.
“We need a little more conviction and a clinical edge.”

Relegation clouded by Sala tragedy: Warnock

Relegation clouded by Sala tragedy: Warnock

LONDON • Cardiff City's relegation fate was sealed on Saturday, but manager Neil Warnock felt that losing their Premier League status paled in comparison with the loss felt by the death of Emiliano Sala in January.
The Argentinian striker, who is the club's record signing at £15 million (S$26.9 million), died after his plane crashed in the English Channel, just days before he was set to make his debut against Arsenal.
Warnock, who saw his side go down with a game to go following their 3-2 home defeat by Crystal Palace, claimed the tragedy "puts it into perspective".
He said: "Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that and I didn't think it would affect the players in the way it did.
"I did think he would score 10 or 15 goals, he was the type we needed. It wasn't to be."
It is the third time the 70-year-old has suffered relegation from the top flight, with previous clubs Notts County and Sheffield United dropping a division in 1992 and 2007 respectively.
But Warnock, who has yet to confirm whether he will stay at the Welsh club after their second top-flight relegation in five years, was adamant his latest setback was different, insisting the home fans were proud of what his players had achieved as "they know we've given it our best".

PUTTING FOOTBALL INTO PERSPECTIVE
Yes, we've got relegated, but life is far more important. You can't plan for something like that.
NEIL WARNOCK, Cardiff manager, lamenting Emiliano Sala's death.

He added: "For a while, it looked like the remarkable resilience showed by everyone at the club following the tragedy might bring its own reward when something approaching normality returned.
"But, no matter what spirit the players showed, deficiencies in quality were clear.
"They (the fans) knew when I took over the club was in a mess, it's been reborn - everybody is singing from the same hymn sheet.
The Bluebirds boss also highlighted their 2-1 home loss to Chelsea in March as the turning point, admitting the "result killed us that night in the dressing room".
Referencing the moment defender Cesar Azpilicueta scored an offside equaliser six minutes from time, he said: "It was really low that night. They have kept fighting, so I have no complaints.
"The problems we have had to put up with throughout the season, I have nothing but praise for everybody. It makes such a difference when you hear the crowd."

Football: Kante strike the difference as Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 1-0

(REUTERS) - Chelsea kept up their pursuit of the Premier League's top three clubs with a 1-0 win away to London rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday (Dec 30), thanks to a strike by N'Golo Kante early in the second half.
Chelsea had to work hard to break down Palace who had taken seven points in their previous three matches, including a shock win over champions Manchester City, but seemed content to allow their visitors most of the possession.
After a sterile first 35 minutes, Willian smacked the post with a swinging free kick and Ross Barkley hit the same upright soon afterwards with an acrobatic overhead effort.
Kante broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when his darting run into the Palace penalty area was spotted by defender David Luiz who fed the France World Cup winner to score from close range.
Palace substitute Conor Wickham spurned the hosts' best chance of the game when he toe-punted a shot over the bar in the drying minutes.
Chelsea remain in fourth place in the Premier League, one point behind Manchester City - who play later on Sunday - and two points adrift of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur, but 11 behind leaders Liverpool. Crystal Palace remain in 14th spot.

A second-half strike from N'Golo Kante was enough for Chelsea to beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in the Premier League and send them five points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal. He told the United official website: "It's a great feeling to know the manager and the club back me, I'm looking forward to repaying them!
"This is my ninth season with the club and I am delighted to be continuing my progression with this team.
"It is a real honour to play for Manchester United and we are all now concentrating on the busy schedule of games throughout the festive period," added Smalling, who has made 18 appearances for the club this season.

Sturridge, Moreno out, Origi next to go?

LONDON • Divock Origi has emerged as a cult hero for Liverpool last season, scoring seven goals, mostly off the bench, as the Reds won the Champions League and were pipped to the Premier League title by Manchester City.
But the 24-year-old's future at the Merseyside club is in doubt, while the club confirmed on Tuesday that England striker Daniel Sturridge and Spanish defender Alberto Moreno will leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.
Belgium striker Origi, who has 21 appearances last term, said yesterday: "I don't know if I'm going to stay (at Liverpool) but... I'll think about my future and make a decision. I don't want to talk too much about my future right now.
"But Liverpool know my qualities and they have recently made an offer of a contract extension. That's the first step.
"I am feeling comfortable at Liverpool and that's important... Obviously, I have personal goals in my mind but I put the team first."
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has praised the departing Sturridge and Moreno.
Sturridge scored 67 goals in 160 appearances since arriving from Chelsea in 2013, while Moreno has played 141 times since joining from Sevilla in 2014, although both have increasingly played bit-part roles under Klopp.
The German told the club website: "Daniel has earned the right to be considered a modern-day Liverpool great, I would think.
"He came to the club while we were trying to rebuild and re-establish ourselves. Some of the goals he has scored for Liverpool were so, so, so important.
"Alberto is a person whose personality is reflected in how he plays, full of life, full of energy, always positive, an unbelievable character who is always willing to give all of himself for the team.
"We will miss them of course, but we can say farewell with the best words possible, guys, you leave as European champions."
Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup after they beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid last Saturday, and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has yet to come down from his "massive high".
Admitting it had been "a great season to look back on", the 20-year-old, who had a record-breaking 12 assists, the most by a defender in the Premier League, told Sky Sports: "Apart from a few niggles, I cannot pick out a bad moment.
"We're up there with one of the best teams in the world now and we've got respect from every big club in Europe.
"It's a dream come true and it's something that you always want to do. You don't expect to be in these situations and you never know if you will be again, so for now, I'm trying to soak it up.
"To have a major trophy under the belt now is massive.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to push on for the club and get some more."

Captain's absence fuels Ajax hope

MADRID • Santiago Solari's future is likely to hinge on Real Madrid winning the Champions League.
But, with the team's deficiencies laid bare in back-to-back home losses to Barcelona, his side are staring at the possibility of their campaign being a total write-off.
After being knocked out of the King's Cup and 12 points off the pace in Spain's LaLiga, a third loss in as many games against Ajax today in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie could see the three-time defending European champions' season being wiped out in a week. Real lead 2-1 from the first leg.
Real's players are feeling the pressure, with defender Dani Carvajal admitting: "It's probably been one of the toughest weeks in my time here."
For the first time in 15 years, Real have suffered three consecutive defeats at their Santiago Bernabeu home, starting with Girona's comeback win and followed by the Barcelona double blow.
With Real captain Sergio Ramos suspended after his deliberate yellow card in Amsterdam, Ajax believe they can profit from the defender's absence after the Dutch FA also lent them a hand by postponing their weekend league match to leave them fresh for the trip.

PUT IN A SPOT
When you put him (Bale) on the left, the kid doesn't produce or suffer. On the right too. As second striker too.
PREDRAG MIJATOVIC, ex-Real Madrid player, on Gareth Bale's best position.

Frenkie de Jong, who will join Barcelona in the summer, is eager to further endear himself to the Nou Camp faithful by inflicting more pain on their rivals.
The Netherlands midfielder told Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad: "Real Madrid are obviously the favourites (but) maybe Sergio Ramos will regret it if Ajax pull off an upset on Tuesday."
But the 32-year-old Ramos feels he still can guide his teammates from the sidelines.
Issuing a rallying cry to "continue working and keep winning games", he said: "We have another final in the Champions League on Tuesday and we will fight for it."
However, it is not only in defence that Real have issues, with Gareth Bale also woefully off form, having failed to complete 90 minutes in LaLiga since the end of November.
Former Real forward Predrag Mijatovic has questioned the output of the Wales forward, who was heavily booed by fans in both Clasico meetings, claiming he "has not delivered as he should" since arriving in 2013 as their club-record signing.
He told Spanish radio station Cadena SER: "I want to ask a question, 'Can anyone explain what position is ideal for Bale after five years?'.
"It's that when you put him on the left, the kid doesn't produce or suffer. On the right too. As second striker too.
"Five years (on) and I'm not able to explain myself, in what position you should put him."

LONDON • With two losses and three draws in the Premier League, Goodison Park has not exactly been a fortress this season, much to Jordan Pickford's chagrin.
Everton also have just one win in their last seven league games, but the goalkeeper has demanded they "get that (winning) momentum going", starting with Leicester today.
Urging his teammates to arrest a three-game winless home run, he said on the Everton website: "Leicester is another tough game and it comes less than 70 hours after we finished at Brighton, but our target is to get the three points.
"If we get that result, it will spark a good start to the new year. We did not get the result we wanted to finish off 2018, but that is football and we have another game to turn it around in a short space of time.
"Yes (we have goals in the side) but we couldn't get that one against Brighton (losing 1-0 on Saturday).
"We work hard and we have a lot of depth in our squad and hopefully, those things will help us achieve the win."
Like the Toffees, the Foxes are no model of consistency after crashing back down to earth following their last-minute 1-0 league loss at home to Cardiff at the weekend.
The manner of the loss was bitterly disappointing for the King Power faithful as it had come on the back of two impressive league wins in succession over Chelsea and champions Manchester City.
But Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy told his teammates on the club website to "stay focused" and put that upset to the back of their minds ahead of their trip to Merseyside as they had "a big game against Everton".

Football: Toffees aim to start new year on winning note

With weeks of the season left the Blues had an outside chance of securing European football by finishing seventh but couldn't overtake Wolves. May. After a relatively comfortable home win against Burnley, the Blues rounded out the season with an entertaining 2-2 draw away at Tottenham. So that was the 2018-19 season.

Football: Liverpool seal Christmas top spot as Salah and Van Dijk sink Wolves

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool will spend Christmas on top of the Premier League after goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk earned them a 2-0 win at Wolves on Friday (Dec 21), opening up a four-point lead over second-placed Manchester City.
City can reduce that gap back to a point with a win over Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday, but Juergen Klopp's side will enjoy their Christmas dinner perched in first place.
In driving rain, on a foul night at Molineux, Wolves began brightly, the promoted side showing why they are in seventh place and Moroccan midfielder Romain Saiss forced Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker into an early save.
But Liverpool grabbed the lead in the 18th minute with a beautifully-worked goal. After a clever exchange with Sadio Mane, Brazilian midfielder Fabinho's pull-back was exquisitely turned in off the outside of his foot by Salah.
Jonny and Matt Doherty both tested Alisson before the break, suggesting that Wolves were still very much in the game but it was the visitors who extended their lead in the 68th minute.
Salah drifted a ball into the box towards Van Dijk and the towering Dutch defender calmly slotted past Rui Patricio from close range.
That killed off Wolves although substitute Morgan Gibbs-White should have scored near the end after a slip-up from Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.

Liverpool passed another stringent test of their Premier League title credentials as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk gave them a 2-0 victory at Wolverhampton on Friday that guarantees top spot at Christmas. Salah's 11th goal of the season was a classy one and helped subdue a dangerous Wolves side who had made a lively start.

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat
LONDON • Massimiliano Allegri wants to be considered for the Manchester United manager's job when it becomes available at the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham manager, remains United's first choice but other candidates, including the Juventus coach, have not been ruled out.
United are committed to conducting what club officials have called a "thorough and extensive" recruitment process to determine who should succeed caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Allegri, 51, led Juventus to four successive Serie A titles and took the Italian club to the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017.
The Times of London reported that he is understood to have been taking English lessons and would like to work in the Premier League. The Italian is particularly keen on taking the job at Old Trafford, which is vacant after the sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier this month.
Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid manager, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, has claimed comprehensive victories over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town in his first two matches in charge, but it is understood that the chances of the Molde manager being given the job full time are slim.

SPEED MERCHANT
The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit. He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER , caretaker manager of Manchester United, on his striker Marcus Rashford.

The Norwegian club have insisted that the former United striker will return to his role in May.
Striker Marcus Rashford has played well in Solskjaer's first two league games, scoring the first goal of his reign against Cardiff and nearly setting up Diogo Dalot for a goal against Huddersfield.
Still, Solskjaer believes that Rashford can improve and, having scored 126 goals for the club himself, intends to give some advice to the 21-year-old on how he can become more ruthless.
"The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit," Solskjaer told Norwegian broadcaster TV2.
"He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm and just aim to put the ball past the goalkeeper."
The 45-year-old is also expecting a far tougher challenge when United host Bournemouth in the league tomorrow and when they travel to Newcastle on Wednesday.
"With all due respect to Huddersfield, the two battles against Bournemouth and Newcastle will be more difficult," he said.
Paul Pogba, who had a turbulent relationship with Mourinho, has found a new lease of life under Solskjaer with two assists and two goals in his last two starts.
"He's very important for us and when he plays at his best, he can make the difference in every game," midfielder Nemanja Matic said of his teammate.
"He played very well against Huddersfield but I think that he can do even more. Slowly, game by game he can improve. It was very important for him to score some goals."

Football: Scotland slump to humiliating 3-0 defeat in Kazakhstan

ALMATY, KAZAKHSTAN (AFP) - Alex McLeish refused to quit as Scotland manager after their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign got off to a "horrible" start with a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Kazakhstan on Thursday (March 21).
The Kazakhs, ranked 117th in the world, struck twice inside 10 minutes through Yuriy Pertsukh and Yan Vorogovskiy to leave an under-strength Scotland shell-shocked in the Group I clash in Nursultan.
McLeish's men secured the safety net of a playoff to qualify via the Nations League in November and already that looks like their only realistic route to a first major tournament in 22 years as Baktiyor Zainutdinov's terrific header made it 3-0 six minutes into the second half.
It was one of the most embarrassing results in Scotland's history and McLeish admitted his players had paid the price for their woeful start.
"It was horrible. They hit us with two blockbusters," McLeish said. "It was disappointing not to see a great reaction from that.
"At half-time we tried to change it a wee bit to see if we could unsettle Kazakhstan, but they were very sharp on the night.
"It's a sore one. The facts are that we were beaten by a team ranked lower than us.
"On paper, we should win but I think you have to give Kazakhstan a bit of credit for the way they played." Scotland have a painful history of falling victim to shock results against the game's minnows, but Kazakhstan are the lowest ranked nation to beat Scotland.
In terms of the misery inflicted only a 1-0 defeat against Lithuania in a European Championship qualifier in 2003 and a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica in the 1990 World Cup compare to the Kazakhstan shocker.
A draw against the Faroe Islands in 2002 was another low point, as were the 1978 World Cup draw with Iran and a 4-0 thrashing by Norway in 2009.

McLeish to battle on

When it was put to McLeish that it could be enough to cost him his job, the former Rangers boss vowed to fight on.
"I'll just continue doing my job and suffice it to say I'm not going to get drawn into that question," he said.
"It possibly puts more pressure on me. We have introduced a few new names over the last year or so and it can take time, but I know we don't have time." Asked if the loss was the worst of his career, McLeish added: "I don't really rank defeats. I just feel in terms of losing then I have to bounce back.
"I always feel low after a defeat but I'm pretty good at bouncing back." Without captain Andy Robertson and the highly-rated Kieran Tierney, McLeish was forced to name Graeme Shinnie in an unfamiliar role at left-back, and the Aberdeen skipper was exposed for both the first two goals.
Scotland looked longingly for an offside flag that never came as Pertsukh ran onto a long ball over the top and fired high past the helpless Scott Bain.
The visitors never recovered and Shinnie was caught ball-watching as Vorogovskiy was picked out by Islambek Kuat's pass to slot past Bain again.
Kazakhstan scored just six goals and failed to win a game in their entire qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup.
However, they had half that goal tally and the three points sewn up before the hour mark when Scott McKenna was outjumped by Zainutdinov, who directed his header across Bain into the bottom corner.
Scotland were also without Ryan Fraser and Charlie Mulgrew, who were not selected in agreement with their clubs due to the plastic surface the match was played on.
Bouncing back with victory away to San Marino on Sunday (March 24) is now imperative for Scotland to have any chance of automatic qualification from Group I by finishing in the top two.
But with Russia and World Cup semi-finalists Belgium also in the six-team group, Scotland already have a mountain to climb.

Solskjaer effect has Pogba back in form

Solskjaer effect has Pogba back in form

LONDON • One of the reasons Ed Woodward appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United's interim manager was based on the belief that the Norwegian could get the best out of Paul Pogba.
It was the former striker who gave a 16-year-old Pogba his debut for United's reserve team in 2009 and his admiration for the midfielder has not dimmed.
Four months ago, when Jose Mourinho's faith in the player was waning, Solskjaer, who is on loan from Norwegian club Molde till the end of the season, said he "would absolutely, no doubt build the United team around him".
His ringing endorsement was repaid by Pogba, who scored only his second brace in the Premier League, in their 3-1 home win over Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
With the midfielder adding to his two assists in the 5-1 win at Cardiff, Solskjaer feels that United are finally seeing the "Paul I know".
He said: "He is one I really enjoyed (watching today). The Paul I've known since he was in the reserves and youth team with me.
"He has always been a happy boy, he's always had a big smile on his face. Paul loves playing for this club. He's a United boy through and through, a kid who knows what it means to play for United."
Pogba had been benched for the three league games prior to Mourinho's sacking, but Solskjaer has shown faith since taking over, restoring the French World Cup winner to his two starting line-ups.
While the Red Devils again cruised to victory, the outcome could have been different if goalkeeper David de Gea had not kept out an effort from Laurent Depoitre moments before the hosts' second goal, scored by Pogba.
"Dave's save was the defining moment. One of the best saves I've seen," said Solskjaer.
The 46-year-old also touched on his return to Old Trafford, where he spent 11 seasons as a player.
He said: "It's special to walk out there, hearing the crowd again singing my song. Normally, they started after I scored a goal, not before the game after I walked out.
"I'll never forget these two games."
