Football: Tampines Rovers, Home United and Hougang United aim to dethrone Albirex Niigata in S'pore Premier League
SINGAPORE - Since 2015, no local team have won the Singapore Premier League (previously known as S-League), and no team could break the Albirex Niigata title monopoly since 2016.
But a trio of regular contenders and dark horses have emerged in a bid to end the Japanese team's dominance in the 2019 season.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers proved their mettle early on with a 4-0 pre-season win over the White Swans and will be keen to show they are way better than their fourth-placed finish last season.
With chairman Desmond Ong handing out multi-year contracts since coming on board in 2017, the Stags are benefiting from the stability and continuity as their players are showing a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities on the pitch.
Even as 19-year-old Singaporean Joel Chew and 20-year-old Serb Zehrudin Mehmedovic look set to be a revelation in midfield with their intelligent play, Tampines are also banking on those at the other end of the experience spectrum to make a difference.
Canadian Jordan Webb, 30, is entering his 10th SPL season and for a winger, has an outstanding record of 79 goals in 208 league games, while 41-year-old centre-back Daniel Bennett is into his 21st SPL season.
Possibly the longest-serving import in the local professional game, Webb has thrilled fans with his ability to take on and beat defenders. He said: "Time moves so fast. I want to play for a few more years and win some silverware.

"Having kept the bulk of players from last season definitely helps in terms of chemistry. I would be selling us short if I say we are not going for all the trophies. We have good atmosphere, good ideas and the energy levels are high."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee added: "Many are raving about Joel's talent and potential but we need to be careful with expectations and give him every chance to succeed.
"As for Daniel and Jordan, it is not about age. They are as good as any player in their positions in the local game and we wouldn't sign them if we didn't think they can contribute. Besides their abilities, they are great leaders to those learning the ropes.
"We want to be effective in and out of pre-season. It is not just the results, but the performance that defines who we are. If we can win and entertain with attractive football, that would be the ideal scenario."
Two-time winners Home United are also another local side to have gotten one over Albirex this season, when they beat the defending champions on penalties for the Community Shield last Saturday.
The Protectors were the best local side last season, finishing league runners-up and winning the AFC Cup Asean zonal final. Like Tampines, they have retained 17 of 24 players, including South Korean lynchpin Song Ui-young and the evergreen Shahril Ishak who combined for 40 goals in all competitions last term.
They also boast of arguably the league's best local Under-23 trio in forward Adam Swandi, central midfielder Hami Syahin and central defender Taufiq Muqminin.
With their last major trophy coming in the form of the 2013 Singapore Cup and their last league title in 2003, Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said it is time to end the drought.
He added: "We want to build on our successes last season and go one better. Fifteen years without a league title is too long and we will have to work hard and keep our concentration even with our AFC Cup commitments to end that wait.
"Beating Albirex on penalties is good for our confidence and it should one of the most open seasons in recent years but we won't write them off as they can only get better training full time without National Service or school commitments.
"They played with five at the back against us and we couldn't score, so it is up to us to find ways to adapt and penetrate against such teams in the future."
Meanwhile, the dark horses in the nine-team SPL have to be Hougang United, who added considerable firepower to a team that scored a league-low of just 22 goals in 24 games last season.
While they have never finished in the top half or won any major titles, the Cheetahs are gunning for history, with coach Clement Teo declaring that "third would be an underachievement".
Retaining forwards Iqbal Hussain, Shahfiq Ghani and Fazrul Nawaz, they have since signed Faris Ramli and welcomed back Croat Stipe Plazibat and captain Zulfahmi Arifin.
They initially secured the services of 2015 and 2016 top scorer Rafael Ramazotti, only for the Brazilian to go missing and sign for Mexican club FC Juarez.
Teo was positive and saw this development as a blessing in disguise as it allowed him to shore up his defence with South Korean centre-back Kong Howon.
He said: "We wanted two foreign strikers to give us more firepower, but it was also true that Afiq Yunos was our only natural centre-back.
"The Ramazotti incident allowed us to sign Kong and it was a bonus we picked up Faris, and he will give us a different dimension with his ability to take on players. Yes, we have many attackers, but this also means there is a good and healthy competition to start a game.
"With the team we assembled, we feel we need to be in the title race. Among our players, the mindset is even a draw is an underachievement."
Zulfahmi, who has returned after one season with Thailand's Chonburi, added: "Any team can win the league this season and Albirex are beatable. It depends on who are the most consistent across 24 games.
"Thanks to our chairman Bill Ng and the management, we now have quality attackers and a great team, so we got to be more adventurous and clinical than before to fight for the targets we want to achieve."

Football: Ronaldo hat-trick fires Juventus into Champions League quarter-finals
TURIN, Italy (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo shot Juventus into the Champions League last eight on Tuesday (March 12) with a hat-trick that saw his side overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit against Atletico Madrid with a thrilling 3-0 win in Turin.
The Portuguese struck either side of half-time to level the aggregate scores before crashing home the decisive penalty kick four minutes from the end.
Ronaldo was signed from Real Madrid in order to help Juve turn domestic dominance into European success and he pulled off his most important display for the Serie A club since arriving in pre-season with his team with their backs to the wall following their 2-0 defeat in Madrid last month.
The 34-year-old rose to head home Federico Bernardeschi's 27th-minute cross to get the ball rolling before repeating the trick with Joao Cancelo's swinging ball two minutes after the break to get the Allianz Stadium roaring with belief.
With the tie delicately poised he stepped up to score the winning goal of a pulsating tie from the spot after Bernardeschi was brought down by Angel Correa, keeping alive Juve's hopes of a first Champions League title since 1996.
Liverpool's victory over Tottenham Hotspur to take the Champions League title on Saturday will let the club make another claim: it'll become the first global soccer team to bring in more than 250 million pounds ($316 million) in a season from broadcast income.

Football: No let-up for English league leaders
Football: No let-up for English league leaders
LONDON • 'Tis the season to be jolly and Liverpool certainly have much reason to be jovial given their four-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.
But, with three games coming up in nine days, vice-captain and midfielder James Milner has warned that there is no time for merry-making and urged the Reds to adopt a business-like approach.
Jurgen Klopp's men start the hectic festive period with a Boxing Day home clash with former manager Rafael Benitez's Newcastle - the only team they have not met this season - before taking on Arsenal on Saturday and a potential title decider against City on Jan 3.
"Boxing Day always seems to have a different feel," Milner told liverpoolfc.com. "There are plenty of distractions... But, as players, we have to focus on the job at hand and make sure we're not distracted.
"It is the time of the year for family and you have to make time for that but, when you're training on Christmas Day and then going to the hotel and preparing for the game, your mind has got to be on that.
"We've got a good group of players who have done that very well this year and a lot of players who are very experienced around Christmas time and know what it's about.
"It's a tough time of the year, so it's important we keep the hammer down and keep pushing and keep trying to get those results."
The Reds are yet to taste defeat in 18 games this season but former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas feels that they will not emulate Arsenal's "Invincibles" side of 2003-04.
"It's not unrealistic (for Liverpool to go unbeaten) because of the standards that they've set and the way that they are playing," he told BT Sport. "We felt this about Manchester City last year and they fell just short of it and I feel like the same will probably happen to Liverpool at some point.
"It might be a weird game that catches them out, it might not be the obvious one. I do believe there will be a game where they will get beaten this season."
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson agrees with Jenas that Liverpool will slip up at some stage.
"I don't think Pep Guardiola will be too concerned about a four-point gap with 20 games left to play," said the 71-year-old, who coached the Reds from 2010-2011, after the shock 3-2 win against City.
"One of those is going to be against Liverpool but, even without that game, the chances are that Liverpool will go somewhere and something like this will happen.
"Someone will beat them against the odds, there is a long way to go yet and there will be an upset somewhere along the line."
Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who missed the last three games with a twisted ankle, is back in training and could be restored to the starting line-up. Midfielder Naby Keita, who suffered a number of knocks against Wolves before being replaced early in the second half, is also in contention.
Liverpool have scored 39 goals in 18 Premier League games this season and Newcastle midfielder Mohamed Diame has warned the Magpies that they will have to be miserly in defence if they are to get a good result at Anfield.
"We know it will be tough, we know we will run a lot, but we need to be ready," the Senegal international told NUFC TV.
"We're going to start the game at 0-0 and we have to make sure we keep our clean sheet and try to score when we get the chance because in most games, you get at least one or two chances.
"We have to stay strong, stay compact and make sure we are ready for this game. They are a team which has a lot of potential up front with top players, so we need to be strong, keep the shape and keep fighting as we are doing."

Low savours 'good signal'
WOLFSBURG • Germany coach Joachim Low was pleased with the "learning experience" his new-look, young team have gained after making a promising return to the international stage with a 1-1 friendly draw with Serbia on Wednesday.
The Germans, knocked out of last year's World Cup in the group stage and relegated in the Nations League, had only one player (goalkeeper Manuel Neuer) from their 2014 World Cup win in their starting line-up as they look to rebuild and improve after a disastrous 2018.
Substitute Leon Goretzka scored the equaliser in the 69th minute at the Volkswagen Arena in Wolfsburg after in-form youngster Luka Jovic had headed the Serbs ahead in the 12th.
"In the first half, the automation in this new team, playing together for the first time, did not function that well," said Low.
"But, in the second half, the team sent a very good signal that we can increase pressure and we can increase the tempo.
"We had a lot of chances and we missed the final touch a bit. That is also part of the learning experience. Overall, I am very satisfied with the mentality, the pressure we created."
It was a totally new side as Low sent world champions Mats Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller into international retirement in a surprise decision last week as his team prepare to launch their Euro 2020 qualification campaign against the Netherlands in Group C on Sunday.
With Kai Havertz, Julian Brandt and Leroy Sane playing behind forward Timo Werner, the hosts were more aggressive and quicker than in recent games and needed only three minutes to get a shot on target.
Serbia went ahead after 12 minutes as their first corner bounced off the back of two players to land perfectly for Jovic to head in his first international goal.
Germany were vulnerable in the first half but raised their game after the break, although they wasted several chances and were frustrated by goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic.
But they kept their foot firmly on the gas and were rewarded when Goretzka clinched the vital goal with a shot at the edge of the box.
Serbia were left with 10 players in stoppage time when Milan Pavkov was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sane.
The Manchester City winger was taken off, but Low said his injury was not too serious and he would be fit for Sunday.
"It was a vicious foul. Sane was lucky and got away with not getting hurt, but such fouls can break bones," he said.
Sane also confirmed that he was not badly injured and that the tackle "looked worse than it was".
Germany will need an even bigger effort on Sunday with a tricky match at big rivals Netherlands. Serbia also play their first qualifier that day, at title holders Portugal.
"The Netherlands have had a good development and will be a different kind of test for us," Low added.

Football: Pochettino gives backing to under-fire Lloris
Football: Pochettino gives backing to under-fire Lloris
LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (April 2) that Hugo Lloris will remain in goal for Tottenham despite a series of costly errors this season.
Lloris has endured fresh criticism after his fumble led to Toby Alderweireld's decisive own goal in the final minutes of Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
It is not the first time this term the Tottenham captain has made a mistake that ended up haunting his team.
But Spurs boss Pochettino has always backed the France World Cup winner, even in the wake of a drink-driving charge earlier in the campaign.
Pochettino confirmed Lloris would be in goal for Tottenham's first game in their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
"He is my captain. He's one of the best keepers in the world. There's no doubt," Pochettino said.
"There's no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he's going to be in the goal.
"It's a situation that is so painful because I think we deserved more (at Liverpool), but in that kind of situation, which happens in football, it's only to be strong and back our player.
"I think Hugo is going to be, like always, great for us. He was great for us.
"He was so important in all that process in five years, and for sure he's going to be one of the most important players for the future of the club too."
Tottenham's return home to their 62,062-seater stadium could not have come at a better time as they look for a morale boost after a wretched run.
They have taken just one point from their past five Premier League games, which has seen them not only drop out of the title race but also put their top-four place in serious peril.
There were signs of promise in the cruel loss to Liverpool and Pochettino is sure that their new home will be graced by Champions League football next term.
"Of course, the best stadium in the world must have the Champions League," he said.
"It would be a shame to not be in the next Champions League.
"But we are going to fight. We are in the top four, disappointed with the last result but of course it's not the same.
"Against Liverpool we deserved more, played really well second half, the feeling was so good. Playing like this I have no doubts we are going to be in the top four and playing in the Champions League next season.
"It's in our hands. It's a mini-league and playing five games in our new stadium will be a big boost for our players and fans. It's up to us to achieve that."
Tottenham, who have been playing at Wembley for the past two years, have had a painstaking wait following frustrating delays to the stadium's opening this season, which have postponed their moving-in date from August 2018.
But Pochettino is ready for a special day in the club's history.
"It's going to be very special, at last the new stadium is a reality," he said. "Now it's so close, just over 24 hours until we play in our new home.
"It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone will realise the magnitude of the project."

"It's going to be very special, at last the new stadium is a reality," he said. "Now it's so close, just over 24 hours until we play in our new home.
"It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone will realise the magnitude of the project."

LONDON • Manchester City yesterday hit out in a strongly worded statement after a Uefa probe into allegations of Financial Fair Play (FFP) irregularities was sent for a final judgment at European football's governing body.
The chairman and chief investigator of Uefa's Club Financial Control Body investigatory chamber, Yves Leterme, has concluded City have a case to answer and has referred the matter to the adjudicatory chamber, which will rule on the matter.
Members of the investigatory chamber are thought to have recommended a Champions League ban if the allegations of misleading Uefa over FFP are proved.
City, who have denied wrongdoing, expressed anger and are expected to take their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if Uefa finds the club guilty.
An official statement read: "Manchester City is disappointed, but regrettably not surprised, by the sudden announcement of the referral to be made by the chief investigator Yves Leterme.
"The leaks to media over the last week are indicative of the process that has been overseen by Mr Leterme.
"Manchester City is entirely confident of a positive outcome when the matter is considered by an independent judicial body.
"The accusation of financial irregularities remains entirely false and the referral ignores a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence provided by Manchester City.
"The decision contains mistakes, misinterpretations and confusions fundamentally borne out of a basic lack of due process."
The club have been facing allegations since November that they falsely declared as sponsorships worth millions of pounds that were in fact an investment from the club's owner, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan of Abu Dhabi's ruling family.
The accusations are based on "leaked" internal City e-mails and other documents published by German magazine Der Spiegel.
Uefa's statement yesterday read: "The Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) chief investigator, after having consulted with the other members of the independent investigatory chamber of the CFCB, has today decided to refer Manchester City to the CFCB adjudicatory chamber following the conclusion of his investigation.
"The CFCB investigatory chamber had opened an investigation into Manchester City on March 7, 2019 for potential breaches of FFP regulations that were made public in various media outlets.
"Uefa will not be making any further comment on the matter."
No timescale has been put on when a verdict was expected.

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool still have the look of Premier League champions despite a goalless Merseyside derby draw at Everton that saw them fall a point behind Manchester City at the top of the table.
After a run of four draws in their past six league games, Liverpool ended the weekend behind City for the first time in three months having played the same number of games as Pep Guardiola's defending champions.
Everton's run without a derby win extended to 19 games stretching back to 2010.
However, the celebrations from the home supporters on the final whistle indicated how much they believe they have damaged Liverpool's hopes of securing a first league title in 29 years.
Klopp, however, remained defiant and continues to see evidence that his players have the resilience to cope with the pressure of one of the most tense title races in years.
"I don't have to give my players any advice, they know already," said Klopp. "They're not little boys any more.
"Sometimes you have the lead and people say it's done when there are 20 games to go to the end of the season, and now they have one or two more points than us. It's the beginning of March, who cares?
Â
"I believe 100 percent in our chances. I know that game-by-game my feeling gets better about the boys because they look ready for it.
"Today, of course, we didn't score, that can happen. A difficult game, opponent, and the wind and weather circumstances didn't help for football in general, it was just a fight.
"We were ready for that today and now we have a point more than before - all good."
The game, and league table, could have had a very different look had Mohamed Salah not missed the best chance of the game on 28 minutes.
Morgan Schneiderlin's error in midfield allowed Fabinho to play a first-time through ball which sent the Egyptian bearing down on goal with only Jordan Pickford to beat.
But the England goalkeeper, who was at fault for Liverpool's dramatic 96th-minute winner when the sides met in December, did well to spread himself and beat away Salah's shot.
Salah also missed the best opportunity of the second half when a bad touch allowed Michael Keane to make a magnificent last-ditch challenge.
The African player of the year, who scored 44 goals in an incredible first season at Anfield, has now scored just once in his last seven games.
"When you see the situation, he is doing everything right," Klopp said of Salah's wasted chances. "He takes his decision a millisecond earlier or later and the defender can jump in.
"We had our moments but there is no reason for taking it or not taking it, you have to fight against the circumstances, against the opponent, and the boys did that." There were other chances for Liverpool, the best of which fell to Fabinho 21 minutes from time, but he took too long to control and allowed Lucas Digne to make a tackle.
Yet, Everton could even have snatched a long-awaited win near the end when substitute Richarlison's low cross just eluded Bernard.
"We knew how much this fixture means to the fans," said Pickford. "If you can't score, then don't concede."

Footballer Ben Davis fails to report for NS
Footballer Ben Davis fails to report for NS
Footballer Ben Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement yesterday.
In response to queries from The Straits Times, Mindef said: "Mr Benjamin Davis is an NS defaulter. He failed to report for NS as required. He is also staying overseas without a valid exit permit.
"Mr Davis has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable upon conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to three years."
ST understands that Davis was required to enlist last Thursday.
His father Harvey Davis did not reply when asked to respond to the Mindef statement.
However, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) expressed its dismay at the news and issued a strongly worded admonition of the player, whom it capped at the Under-19 level. Davis was also called up to the senior national team last year but was not fielded.
A spokesman said: "The FAS is extremely disappointed with Mr Benjamin Davis' default of his NS obligations. It is thoroughly irresponsible on the part of Mr Davis, and also reneges on his (and his father's) assurance to the FAS that Mr Davis would discharge his NS commitments and play for the Singapore national team."
The spokesman added that the association had supported Davis' application to defer his NS, on the basis that he had agreed to play for the national team, and had benefited from the resources used to educate and train him. "While the matter will now be dealt with by Mindef, the FAS wishes to state categorically that we do not condone such conduct nor did it ever arise in our discussions with Mr Davis that he would seek to avoid his liability," said the spokesman.
A former student at the Singapore Sports School, Davis, 18, moved to London in 2016 to join English Premier League (EPL) club Fulham's academy, where he is registered as an English national.
He was born in Thailand to an English father and a Thai mother.
The Phuket-born player signed professional terms with Fulham last July, becoming the first Singaporean footballer to do so with a top-tier English club.
After he signed, Mindef confirmed that his application for NS deferment had been rejected as he did not "meet the criteria for long-term deferment from full-time NS".
Â
Â
Â
The decision sparked a debate among the sporting fraternity and the general public about issues such as maximising sporting talent and the need to maintain Singapore's security.
In August last year, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen laid out the reasons for the rejection in Parliament, highlighting that "there was no commitment to serve Singapore and our national interests" despite Mr Harvey Davis' contention that if his son were to become the first Singaporean to play in the EPL, it would "make Singapore proud".
Dr Ng reiterated that "deferment... cannot be for that individual, no matter how talented, to pursue his own interests or career, even if it vicariously brings credit or fame to Singapore".
He also noted that Mr Harvey Davis had "consistently refused" to pin down a date for his son to return to serve NS. Mindef has also noted that there are programmes in place to help national athletes continue training while serving NS.
In the last 15 years, only three athletes - swimmers Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen, and sailor Maximillian Soh - have been granted long-term deferment.
Schooling and Quah have represented the Republic at various Olympics, with the former making history by winning gold in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Games.
Davis enjoyed a strong start in his first season with the Fulham Under-18 team - he scored once in 10 games, making 13 tackles and 16 interceptions while racking up a pass accuracy of 90 per cent - but ST understands he has found the going tougher in his sophomore season.
A source, who did not want to be named, said that Davis' performance was adversely affected after news emerged that his application for NS deferment had been rejected.
While he started 12 of Fulham Under-18s' first 14 matches of the season, he has played only 136 out of a possible 630 minutes in their last seven games. He also earned the call-up to the Under-21 team for four games, but was an unused substitute on each of those occasions.
Fulham did not reply to ST's queries by press time.Â
Based on a sentencing framework introduced by the High Court in July 2017, there are four bands of sentencing based on the length of the period of default:
- For those who evade NS for two to six years, the starting point is two to four months' jail
- For seven to 10 years, the starting point is five to eight months' jail
- For 11 to 16 years, the starting point is 14 to 22 months' jail
- For 17 to 23 years or more, the starting point is two to three years' jail.Â
NS defaulters who are under the age of 40 are still required to serve if they return.
A defaulter's sentence may be discounted based on various factors, such as the length of period of default, how substantial his connection to Singapore is, whether he voluntarily surrendered or was arrested, and whether he pleaded guilty or claimed trial.

Home United snap Albirex Niigatas title-winning streak
Home United snap Albirex Niigatas title-winning streak
The long trophy streak has, at long last, been broken.
After hoovering up all 11 trophies on offer in the previous three seasons, Albirex Niigata finally tasted defeat when Home United triumphed 5-4 on penalties to lift the Community Shield last night as the new Singapore Premier League (SPL) season kicked off.
The season curtain-raiser, played before 4,626 fans at Jalan Besar Stadium, ended goalless after 90 minutes and no extra time was played.
But it was a new SPL rule that was a talking point for the White Swans, apart from a rare defeat.
For this campaign, the Japanese club have to sign at least four Singaporean players, with at least two of them starting and playing the entire first half.
Against Home, Albirex coach Keiji Shigetomi started with Firas Irwan and Zamani Zamri in wide midfield at the beginning. But both were replaced respectively by Sota Sugiyama and Shuhei Sasahara at the break.
The tactician explained: "When we were preparing for this match, it (replacing the two local players at half-time) was already in our plans.
"The two boys are very young, still only 18. They helped to keep the shape (of the team) and worked very hard but, in the second half, I wanted to retain more possession.
"That's why I brought on the Japanese players, who are able to retain the ball better."
With or without the local players, what was noticeable yesterday was a change in Albirex's style.
Swaggering and stylish, they won the SPL after an unprecedented unbeaten campaign that saw them win 21 and draw three of their 24 fixtures last term. Also, apart from their consecutive clean sweeps from 2016 to 2018, Albirex did a double in 2015 by winning the Singapore and League Cups to totally dominate the local scene.
Against Home yesterday, Albirex played more direct balls out of defence, did not press as intensely and the backline struggled with clearing the ball at times.
Shigetomi said: "It was a very difficult game. It was very tight defensively and there's not much space on the pitch."
Home's Hami Syahin was the man who denied the White Swans their space in attack.
An attacking midfielder by vocation, the 20-year-old impressed in a deep-lying role and buzzed all over midfield to recover possession.
In a scrappy first half, chances were few as both sides sized each other up with a series of crunching tackles.
The best chance of the game fell to the Protectors in the 35th minute, but Shahril Ishak was unable to connect with the teasing cross from Iqram Rifqi, with goalkeeper Kengo Fukudome beaten.
Both teams missed two of their first five kicks during the shoot-out.
At the sudden-death stage, it was Hami who scored the decisive attempt after defender Naruki Takahashi's effort rebounded off the bar.
Home's gritty win delighted their new head coach Saswadimata Dasuki, who said: "In terms of effort and commitment, the boys put in a great performance.
"They really want to fight for their places. And we have senior players like Shahril, Juma'at (Jantan) and Izzdin (Shafiq) guiding the youngsters.
"Even at 0-0, we did not panic as we controlled our emotions and tempo.
"I told the boys from the beginning that we want to go for the title. There will be lots of hard matches and we have to take care of ourselves physically and mentally."

LONDON • While the neutral observer may be wondering what all the fuss is about over Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has yet to start in the Premier League, Bayern Munich believe he can be their equivalent of Jadon Sancho.
The Borussia Dortmund winger opted to leave Manchester City for Germany in August 2017 in search of more playing time, and the England international has not looked back since, becoming one of the hottest prospects in European football.
The six-time defending Bundesliga champions also clearly feel Hudson-Odoi has what it takes to follow in Sancho's footsteps, which is why the English winger has been the subject of four separate bids since last month - the latest being £35 million (S$60.2 million), catapulting the relatively unknown 18-year-old into the limelight.
But Chelsea have been incensed at the lengths Bayern are going to court their academy product, who has been handed successive starts in their last two games against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham for the first time in his career.
While the club are still hoping a run in the first team, which could continue today in the league against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge, might persuade him to stay, it appears his head has been turned.
According to Sky Sports, Hudson-Odoi wants to leave the club and, with only 18 months left on his deal, he holds all the cards.
With his contract situation leaving Chelsea in a bind, Blues boss Maurizio Sarri directed his ire at the Bavarian giants at his press conference yesterday, claiming Bayern "did not respect our club" after sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said in midweek Hudson-Odoi was a player they "would definitely like to have".
He blasted: "It's not professional because they are talking about a player under contract with Chelsea. I am very, very happy with the player because he is improving a lot in the defensive phase.
"Now he needs to improve in some movements without the ball. He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player and I would like to have him in the future."
The Italian revealed he had recommended to the club hierarchy that two players be signed in the January transfer window, but declined to give any names or state their positions. "I spoke with the club and the club know very well my opinion," he said.
He also shot down speculation over Willian's future, despite British media reports linking the "very important" Brazil forward with Barcelona, insisting "it's impossible to lose him in January".
However, Sarri hinted that misfiring £60 million club-record signing Alvaro Morata could leave on loan, but reiterated it would only happen if there was a like-for-like "replacement" for the striker, who has scored just five league goals in 16 games this term.

GETTING BETTER
He is working very well at the moment, so I am happy with the player.
MAURIZIO SARRI, Chelsea manager, rates the 18-year-old winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is also wanted by German champions Bayern Munich.

Hougang United 4
Geylang International 1
Hougang United's dead-eye over the dead-ball, Zulfahmi Arifin, proved the difference in the 4-1 romp over Geylang International at the Jalan Besar Stadium yesterday that lifted the Cheetahs to second in the Singapore Premier League.
The Hougang skipper provided assists for Jordan Vestering (7th minute) and Afiq Yunos (67th), from a corner kick and a free kick respectively, with Amir Zalani (55th) and Fazrul Nawaz (83rd) scoring the home side's other goals.
A header by Dutch midfielder Barry Maguire in the 49th minute had given Geylang hope for a fightback, but proved mere consolation.
Geylang coach Noor Ali said the difference in quality between the two sides was telling - only four in his matchday squad have earned Singapore caps, compared to half of Hougang's 18-man team.
"We had our chances but, at the end of the day, quality is what counts," said the 43-year-old.
"They don't pay Zulfahmi (well) for no reason, and his delivery of the ball was something we found very hard to contain."
Zulfahmi, 27, recently scored his first international goal for Singapore, curling home a fine free kick from 25m in the 1-1 draw with Oman on March 23.
Aside from his pinpoint deliveries yesterday, he was also a calming influence on the Hougang backline, playing in the centre of a five-man defence, before moving into a midfield role in the second half.
Hougang coach Clement Teo, however, felt his skipper did not play at his best.
"I've known Zul since he was 16 and this boy has got tremendous talent," he said. "But there were phases of the game where he should have done better."
Despite seeing his team leapfrog Tampines Rovers into second place before the Stags play Balestier Khalsa today, Teo believes his charges still have much room for improvement.
He said: "Credit to the players, they have shown they are able to play and fight for each other.
"But it's only the sixth game and the team have got a lot of potential. We need to take it one game at a time. We can't think that now we're already (second), we're doing good enough."

Football: Silverware matters most to Emery as Arsenal aim to win for missing Mkhitaryan
BAKU (AFP) - Henrikh Mkhitaryan's Arsenal teammates stated their determination to win Wednesday's Europa League final against Chelsea in Baku for the absent Armenian star, as Gunners boss Unai Emery told his team to focus on winning silverware rather than worrying about a possible return to the Champions League.
The build-up to this London derby European final has been marred by Mkhitaryan's decision not to travel for the game because of fears over his safety due to an ongoing political dispute between his home country and neighbouring Azerbaijan.
He had already skipped Arsenal's trip to the Azeri capital for a group game against Qarabag last October.
"He is very important for us, on the pitch and off the pitch, and we want to give him as well a trophy tomorrow," said Granit Xhaka, the Swiss midfielder.
Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, who previously played with Mkhitaryan at Borussia Dortmund before moving to England last year, posted a picture on Twitter earlier this week of the two in training under the caption "Missing you bro".
"We were five or six years together so I know him very well, we are very good friends. We have to play for him and for the players who are injured and if we win this game it is also for them," he said at Tuesday's (May 28) pre-match press conference.
It remains to be seen if Mkhitaryan's absence will handicap Arsenal on the field at the Baku Olympic Stadium, as the Gunners prepare for a huge twin challenge.
They are seeking their first European trophy in 25 years and also have to win in order to reach the Champions League next season after missing out on a top-four place in the Premier League. In contrast, Chelsea have already secured a return to Europe's top table.
"We have two targets - the first and most important is to win a title," said Emery, who has already won this competition three times with Sevilla.
"Each title is very important for a team like Arsenal or Chelsea, in England and also in Europe."
Emery's own desire to win this competition for a fourth time in six years is understandable, but for Arsenal there is also a need - financially and in terms of prestige - to return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
"For a club like Arsenal we have to be in the Champions League. It's an amazing and important game tomorrow because we want to give us, the fans and the club the Champions League back," said Xhaka.
"I think if you see the season, maybe we deserved to be there in the top four. But this is a big game, a final, we can take a trophy and we can go back to the Champions League."
Meanwhile, Emery refused to be drawn on whether Petr Cech would start in his final game for the club before retiring.
The veteran goalkeeper has been strongly linked with a return to Chelsea, his old club, in an upstairs capacity, which could have a role in Emery's decision whether or not to play the 37 year-old here.
Cech has played most European games this season, while the German Bernd Leno has been the first choice in the Premier League.
"I can speak about Petr Cech a lot, but above all he's a great man, a great professional," said Emery.
"It is going to be his last match tomorrow because he will finish his career and I want to do something important with him, playing or not playing."
