Spurs blasted for lacking hunger, mental strength
LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino was damning in his assessment of his Tottenham players after they lost 2-1 at Southampton, accusing them of "complacency" and "arrogance" before suggesting that they do not have the mental strength required to win major honours.
Spurs looked on course for victory, having taken the lead through Harry Kane's 26th-minute goal and they were utterly dominant against their relegation-threatened opponents on Saturday.
But then came a quite incredible turnaround after the break as the Saints recorded their first home victory over Spurs since returning to the Premier League in 2012.
Yan Valery equalised before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner nine minutes from time as Spurs threw away their advantage.
Spurs were incredibly poor after the interval, especially in defence, and their manager, who was forced to watch from the directors' box, having been hit with a two-game ban for improper conduct, was not sparing in his criticism.
"It is so difficult to understand the way we played the second half," said Pochettino. "We showed a lack of hunger that you need to kill the game and, if you want to be a contender, to fight for things, you cannot play like this.
"We started to take some risks that were unnecessary and that was the main problem. It gave them belief and they started to build their game.
"When you lose the momentum after 45 minutes, that is about mentality, that is about being strong and keeping it right."
Spurs have three defeats and a draw from their past four league games, a curious run given their fine Champions League last-16 victory over Borussia Dortmund and one that puts their hopes of finishing third in jeopardy.
Admitting that it would be a "massive challenge" for Spurs to stay ahead of their top-four rivals, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all within striking distance, Pochettino added: "We are fighting against big sides.
"People talk about perceptions, but we need to realise if you do not fight with intensity for the Champions League, you will struggle.
"We had a big gap, welcome to the reality, we are under pressure to win games."

Does Lebron lack Mental Toughness? It seems to me that he has physical strength but lacks mental strength. The playoffs are really more of a mental challenge than a physical one, and I think lebron is mentally still a child, until he gets his head under control I don't think he's ever going to win a championship.

Spurs fans have unfortunately become accustomed to the side lacking the drive, desire and mental toughness to see jobs out in the past, but the fact that we shrugged off going a goal behind on Saturday to continue to dominate the game and eventually win it is a testament in itself.

Eden Hazard was anonymous once again and the lack of drive and purpose within the team after the half-time interval was embarrassingly obvious. Gunners master Napoli but Ramsey's injury sours win

LONDON • Aaron Ramsey could have played his last game for Arsenal ahead of his summer move to Juventus after limping off injured in their Europa League quarter-final second-leg tie at Napoli on Thursday.
The Welsh midfielder looked to have picked up a hamstring injury half an hour into the 1-0 win at the Stadio San Paolo after a high tackle on Napoli's Piotr Zielinski.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery, whose side beat Napoli 3-0 on aggregate to set up a last-four clash with Valencia, said he didn't know whether Ramsey, 28, would play again this season.
"It is a muscle injury. Normally it will be some weeks out for him. I don't know if we'll see him again before the end of the season," Emery told BT Sport.
Ramsey's injury was the one sour note on an otherwise excellent evening for Arsenal in Naples.
Once Alexandre Lacazette's free kick went in in the 36th minute, the tie was never in doubt.

Goals Alexandre Lacazette has had a hand in since his debut for Arsenal in August 2017 - 33 goals, 13 assists in all competitions, more than any other player for the club.

Emery was delighted that his team put in a heroic shift.
"I am very proud of my players and of our work," he said.
"We showed the players have the habit to play matches against good teams in a good atmosphere, and show big personality."
In the other semi-final, Chelsea will meet German side Eintracht Frankfurt after they were given a fright by Slavia Prague in a 4-3 home win on Thursday that saw them seal a 5-3 aggregate victory.

Record number of European victories in a season by an English team - Chelsea, after their 4-3 Europa League win over Slavia Prague.

Already 1-0 up from the first leg, Chelsea were 4-1 ahead at half-time through three goals in the first 17 minutes at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of Pedro, an own goal by Simon Deli and Olivier Giroud.
But the Czech side restored their pride with two early second-half goals from Petr Sevcik as they threatened a remarkable comeback.
Chelsea, however, held on to set up a last-four meeting with Frankfurt, who beat Benfica 2-0 to go through on away goals after the tie ended at 4-4 over two legs.
A relieved Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said his team need to be more consistent if they are to reach the final in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.
"As usual in the last two months, we started very badly in the second half," the Italian said.
"We need a solution. In the last 10 matches, we've started the second half like in this match, so we need to solve this problem."

Football: Former England star Paul Gascoigne faces assault trial for kissing incident

LONDON (AFP) - Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne will stand trial for sexual assault in October after allegedly kissing a woman without consent on a train, a judge ruled on Tuesday (Jan 8).
The 51-year-old ex-Tottenham and Lazio player was arrested on a train between York and Newcastle in August.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court in Middlesbrough in north-east England to formally enter a not guilty plea, the Press Association news agency reported.
His lawyer Michelle Heeley told the court that a number of character witnesses will give evidence "about his propensity to kiss people in a non-sexual manner".
Gascoigne, who has struggled with alcoholism since he retired from top-flight football, wore a blue suit and an open-neck shirt and spoke out during the hearing.
"I'm worried to bits. I'm scared," Gascoigne told judge Simon Bourne-Arton, who granted him unconditional bail.
When told he would have to turn up for the trial, Gascoigne said: "I cannot wait. I have done nothing wrong".
The trial on one charge of "sexual assault by touching" is set to be held on Oct 14.
Gascoigne - known as "Gazza" - made his name with Newcastle before going on to play for Tottenham, Italian giants Lazio and several other teams including Rangers.

The midfielder, widely regarded as one of the most talented players of his generation, was also a key member of the England side that reached the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. He won 57 caps in total.
Gascoigne was one of the first big-name footballers to arrive in China when he made the shock decision to be a player-coach of second division Gansu Tianma in 2003 but he lasted just a handful of games.
In an interview published on Tottenham's website last year, he said: "Sometimes when I look back and people say to me 'do you regret anything in your career'?
"Perhaps I left Spurs too early. I loved it there. The players, the staff, everyone was class and the team spirit was phenomenal, absolute class. We had a great team."

Record 3.5 billion tuned in to 2018 World Cup

PARIS • A record audience of more than 3.5 billion people watched this year's World Cup in Russia, with the final between France and Croatia attracting 1.12 billion viewers, world football's governing body revealed on Friday.
Fifa said 3.572 billion viewers - more than half of the global population aged four and over - watched some part of the official coverage, which was broadcast live from June 14 to July 15.
The global in-home television audience watching at least one minute accounted for almost 3.3 billion viewers, a 2.2 per cent increase on Brazil 2014, according to Fifa's audit of audience data.
A further 309.7 million caught the action on digital platforms, public viewing areas or in bars and restaurants.
The most-watched games after France's 4-2 final victory were England's semi-final defeat by Croatia and the other last-four clash between France and Belgium.
"These figures really do support the claim that Russia 2018 was the best World Cup ever," said Fifa's chief commercial officer Philippe Le Floc'h.
"The fact that half the world's population was watching reflects not just the high quality of our award-winning live coverage, but also that fans everywhere are insatiable for world-class football."
The coverage reached around 1.6 billion individuals in Asia, with 655.7 million (18.4 per cent of the global total) from China, who failed to qualify for Russia 2018.
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar.

Football: Klopp not underestimating 'world's best side' Man City

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Liverpool will need all their fighting qualities to overcome the "best team in the world" Manchester City in Thursday's blockbuster Premier League meeting between the two, manager Juergen Klopp said on Wednesday (Jan 2).
Shortly after City manager Pep Guardiola described table-toppers Liverpool as Europe's best team in his news conference, Klopp returned the compliment with interest and said City could not be taken lightly despite a dip in form.
Defeats by Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester City last month have left Guardiola's side in third place with 47 points, seven points behind unbeaten Liverpool and one behind fellow title contenders Tottenham Hotspur.
"We have to be brave, we have to be full of desire, angry again, all that stuff - like in all the other games - but with the knowledge that the opponent is still the best team in the world," Klopp told a news conference.
"I said it weeks ago because it's 100 percent my opinion; the way they play and all the things they have achieved and the things they will achieve. Nothing has changed, only the points changed, but not the preparation for the game.
"And we are a very, very, very good football team as well. That's why we have the amount of points, that's why we had the results, that's clear. But we prepare for one game."
James Milner missed Liverpool's last two games due to a hamstring injury but the midfielder is in contention to feature against his former side.

"He was back in training with us yesterday for the first time, so we will see," Klopp said.
"His influence on the team is massive... experience is always important if you know how to use it."

Football: Manchester City owners ponder India venture

LONDON (AFP) - The owners of English Premier League champions Manchester City are considering adding a team in India to their global portfolio of clubs, chief executive Ferran Soriano said on Monday (March 4).
A fortnight ago City Football Group (CFG), bankrolled by Sheikh Mansour of the Abu Dhabi royal family, announced they had purchased a stake in Chinese third-rier club Sichuan Jiuniu.
That took the number of clubs under the CFG banner to seven, with the group also owning or having stakes in New York City, Melbourne City, Japan's Yokohama F Marinos, Atletico Torque and Girona, as well as star side Manchester City.
"We have some interest in some markets and countries where there is a genuine football passion and opportunities, like China, but also India," Britain's Press Association quoted Soriano as saying.
"So there might be other opportunities in Asia.
"With all these developments we have to be patient. We've been looking at India for nearly two years now. I'd say this year we'll end up doing an investment in India," he added.
CFG was established as an umbrella organisation in 2013 when City's initial sister club was launched in New York and Soriano said there was still room for significant investment beyond its existing seven teams.
"As we see it now, there is a natural pace of growth that we will follow that takes us to more than seven teams, but not 100 teams.
"I cannot see 10 years ahead but the group might have two or three teams more. Is this going to change in five years and we're going to have more? Maybe, (but) I don't know that.
"But to complete the vision that we had six years ago, I think we will have maybe two or three clubs more."

Football: Molde owners will support me if I stay at Manchester United, says temp boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

(REUTERS) - Manchester United caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said the owners of Norwegian club Molde sent him to Old Trafford with their blessing and asked him to try to turn his temporary stint at the club into a permanent role.
Solskjaer, an ex-United striker who played under former manager Alex Ferguson, has revitalised the team since taking over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, sparking a seven-game unbeaten run in the English Premier League.
United were 11 points off the top four when Solskjaer was appointed, but have since narrowed that gap to five points ahead of their trip to Leicester later on Sunday (Feb 3), making the Norwegian a strong candidate to be given the job permanently.
Solskjaer, who was loaned to United by Molde until the end of the season, said that the Norwegian club's owners, businessmen Kjell Inge Rokke and Bjorn Rune Gjelsten, would support him if he stayed at United.
"When I rang the owner and said United had called and that he always knew that this had been my dream, he said: 'Go over, enjoy yourself - and please don't come back'," Solskjaer told the British media ahead of Sunday's match.
"Both owners wished me all the best because they knew this is something I dreamed about. To get the backing from them was fantastic. If I go back to Molde, I will do my best for them - but it depends when I go back."
Solskjaer added that he would be happy to keep advising United's hierarchy on matters such as player transfers even if he did not become permanent manager, saying his knowledge of the club's culture gave him a useful perspective.

"I am always in the position to tell United who they should look at, and that will continue after the summer if I'm not still here," he said. "I will always advise the club, especially if they ask me."

It seems Salah's position is influencing his stats. Some of the differences in the numbers are logical. Salah dribbles more and makes defensive actions more frequently when he is on the right, rather than when he is the focal point of the team. He also has more touches in the penalty box when playing centrally too.

Spurs' drive to succeed

Spurs' drive to succeed

LONDON • In 2016, Daniel Levy gave Mauricio Pochettino a Bentley Bentayga as a "sign of appreciation" to him for turning down Manchester United, who went on to appoint Jose Mourinho.
With Tottenham having made history this season after reaching their first Champions League semi-final, one would imagine the club chairman is preparing an even more outlandish present, especially if Spurs go on to do the unthinkable and claim silverware this season.
However, Pochettino remains "fearful" that Levy will take back his £160,000 (S$282,000) gift.
Ahead of today's Premier League home match against relegation-threatened Brighton, where a win will boost their hopes of securing a top-four place, he jokingly called the luxury car "more like a loan".
The Spurs boss said: "We'll see if it was a present at the end of my contract here (which ends in 2023). I will tell you if it was a present or to only give me the facility to drive. Maybe on the last day, he says, 'Mauricio, give me the keys!'.
"We hope we can keep going, getting the same result. It is going to be fantastic and it is going to be helpful for us playing in the new stadium with our fans.
"We hope and wish to repeat the performances of the previous results... We are not thinking of Ajax (next week). Now our energy is in Brighton."
But, while Levy remains one of the more tight-fisted power brokers, having signed zero players in the last two transfer windows, he is keenly aware of the impact Pochettino has had, with Spurs punching above their weight in comparison to their bigger-spending rivals.
Securing Champions League football for a fourth consecutive season will help Spurs to fend off any would-be suitors in the summer, and defender Ben Davies has called on his teammates to "kick on and try to win every game between now and the end of the season".
The Wales international added: "That's the target and it starts against Brighton on Tuesday. It will be tough, they are fighting for everything... We have to be ready."
The 25-year-old is expecting the feel-good factor from their new £1 billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to continue to provide a lift, with three wins in as many matches, while scoring seven goals and conceding none.
In other good news, captain Hugo Lloris will return from injury, although Moussa Sissoko is ruled out.
It also bodes well that their opponents have failed to score in their last five league matches.
Seagulls boss Chris Hughton has been forced to defend his players, whom critics have accused of "downing tools".
He told reporters ahead of their trip to his former club: "Absolutely, that's not the case. We have to find formulas and pull out results to get the points that we need."
"I have lots of memories as a (Spurs) player and as a coach. How much I'll enjoy it will be down to the performance the team put in, but I'm hoping I can enjoy it."

Man City could get transfer ban: report
LONDON • Manchester City are set to be banned by Fifa from making signings in the next two transfer windows after they broke rules related to the protection of youth players and third-party ownership, according to a report in The Sun.
The club are already being investigated by the Football Association and the Premier League over allegations related to youth transfers and Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
Uefa is also looking into potential breaches of FFP, an investigation that could result in City being banned from playing in the Champions League.
A transfer ban for the English champions would come less than a month after Chelsea were hit with the same sanction for 29 breaches of Article 19 of Fifa's regulations on the transfer and status of players.
Fifa has been investigating City's international transfers for several years. According to The Sun, Fifa believes City have crossed the line with regard to their relationship with Nordsjaelland and the Right To Dream football academy in Ghana that is also owned by the Danish club's president, Tom Vernon.
Last year, two players from the academy, Sierra Leone's George Davies and Ghanaian Dominic Oduro, told Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten that they signed for City and played in youth matches before they turned 18. Both have since left the Etihad.
That investigation was broadened later last year when another Danish newspaper, Politiken, published a story that said City had a secret deal with Vernon to have first refusal on the best prospects from Right to Dream.
If true, that would be a breach of the rules preventing the third-party ownership of players.
Neither Fifa nor City were available for comment on Thursday.

Football: Thailand axe Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after Asian Cup horror show in 4-1 loss to India

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac following a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by India in their opening Asian Cup football game at the weekend.
The 65-year-old Serb, who took charge of Thailand in 2017, paid the price after the War Elephants conceded three second-half goals to slump to a shock defeat in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Jan 6).
Thai football chiefs took a dim view of their Group A flop and acted swiftly to remove Rajevac the morning after.
"The result is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve," Thailand's FA president Somyot Poompanmoung said.
"Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as president of the football association, I cannot stand still with this problem."
Former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai will assume control of the team when they face Bahrain on Jan 10 and hosts United Arab Emirates on Jan 14, Thai officials added.
Rajevac, who has had spells in charge of Algeria and Qatar, famously steered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup where they were beaten on penalties by Uruguay.
But he was left shell-shocked by Thailand's horror show against underdogs India, whose veteran striker Sunil Chhetri scored twice, overtaking Lionel Messi's 65 international goals in the process.
Lamenting his side's abject display, Rajevac admitted that India were worthy winners.
"They were phenomenal - they ran more, were more aggressive and wanted it more," he said.
"They absolutely deserved to win. But we underperformed, especially in the second half."
Rajevic has been criticised for his defensive style but the Serb clearly felt otherwise after watching Thailand over-run by a hungry India side.
"It's not always about technical ability and skill on the ball," he said. "We lacked power, strength and aggression. We need to put more pressure on the ball and show more passion."
Thailand, appearing for the first time in the Finals since co-hosting the Asian Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition.
Cricket-mad India find themselves as unlikely leaders of Group A thanks to their first Asian Cup win in 55 years.
The Emiratis were held 1-1 by Bahrain in Saturday's curtain-raiser.

Emery won't shift blame to men for Wolves debacle
LONDON • Unai Emery refused to give up on Arsenal's Champions League qualification hopes after seeing his men embarrassed by Wolves in a 3-1 Premier League defeat at Molineux on Wednesday.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota all scored in the first half to condemn the Gunners to a third defeat in four games, severely denting their hopes of a top-four finish with just three games to go.
While the Arsenal manager Emery admitted that his fifth-placed team (66 points) were outplayed, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos netting a consolation, he insisted they would continue to fight for Champions League football next season. They are in a battle with Tottenham (70 points), Chelsea (67) and Manchester United (64) for two spots in Europe's top club competition.
After their seventh away loss, with just a clean sheet this term, he was asked whether he would have harsh words with his players.
He said: "I am usually very critical with myself and I am angry with myself that we didn't do the game plan, (but) not with the players.
"First, it is with me and after that, my style and idea is to look in front and find a solution, not who is the player who is worst.
"The solution for me is... on Sunday at Leicester, (we) get our best performance and the best possibility to take the three points."
Wolves, who are seventh and remain on course for their best finish since their sixth place in 1980, were clinical in their finishing.
But Arsenal's wounds were also to a large extent self-inflicted - no thanks to careless passing, brittle defending and an erratic display of goalkeeping from Bernd Leno, who was culpable for the hosts' second and third goals.
Emery refused to criticise his No. 1, adding: "I don't want to speak individually about the players. We need to recover our confidence."

There is one massive reason Arsenal got thrashed last night in the Europa League final against Chelsea and that is the manager Unai Emery. Now, I will say straight up I am not calling for him to be sacked or anything like that and I do believe that he needs at least one more season to try and build the team in his image but neither will I make any more excuses for him.

Minnows Yangon can pack a punch

Minnows Yangon can pack a punch

Tampines Rovers could seal passage to the Asean zone semi-finals of the AFC Cup with a win over Yangon United at the Jalan Besar Stadium today, but Stags head coach Kadir Yahaya has warned his charges to be wary of the Myanmar side.
With two matches left, Tampines lead Group F with 10 points, three ahead of Vietnam's Hanoi FC.
Cambodian side Nagaworld and Yangon have three points apiece but the former are third because of a better head-to-head record.
Yangon are all but out of the running for a place in the knock-out stages - they are unlikely to finish as the best second-placed team among the three Asean groups - which makes them a threat, according to Kadir.
At the pre-game media conference at the Copthorne King's Hotel yesterday, the former Singapore international said: "They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective.
"They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, keep our shape and composure."
The caution is understandable after Tampines struggled before beating Nagaworld 4-2 through three goals in the dying minutes in their last game on April 17.

UNBRIDLED ATTACK
They have nothing to lose, and so the danger we are facing is that they are playing with no objective. They can attack at will, and for us it is important to remain calm, keep our shape and composure.
KADIR YAHAYA, Tampines head coach, on Yangon's attack.

Kadir said of that match: "We expected their (Nagaworld's) fast counter attacks, and there were some lapses in concentration on our part which resulted in them equalising (to make it 1-1)."
"Credit to the players, they kept fighting and eventually we got the goals and result we wanted."
His experienced stars like Khairul Amri and Daniel Bennett will be key to getting a win against Yangon to lift the team after their poor run of just three draws in their last four Singapore Premier League (SPL) matches.
Kadir believes that squad rotation - essential when competing in the AFC Cup - affects the team's consistency, and pointed to how Home United also suffered domestically during their run to the Asean zone crown last year, and how the Protectors posted stronger results in the SPL after the group stage of the AFC Cup.
Home won just twice in their first seven SPL games last term, but notched 10 wins in their next 17 matches to finish second.
Yangon coach Myo Min Tun is expecting a tough night for his charges, especially without first-choice goalkeeper Kyaw Zin Htet (illness) and Guinean striker Sekou Sylla (suspension).
"Tampines have many good and skilful individual players, like the two wingers (Ryutaro Megumi and Jordan Webb)," noted the 35-year-old, who scored for Myanmar against Singapore in the 2008 AFF Suzuki Cup.
"Tomorrow will be very difficult for us, but we will do our best to challenge and show our level and our team's playing style."

Football: Geylang International's teen scorer Vasileios Zikos Chua wants more than just a place in record books

Football: Geylang International's teen scorer Vasileios Zikos Chua wants more than just a place in record books

SINGAPORE - He had planned to play it cool, but after scoring for the first time in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) last weekend, Geylang International's teenage striker Vasileios Zikos Chua could not contain himself.
He wheeled away from goal at full speed, arms outstretched, and screamed at the top of his lungs, in an expression of pure joy not too dissimilar to former Italy striker Marco Tardelli's iconic manic celebration at the 1982 World Cup.
Vasileios, who turned 17 the day after scoring in Geylang's 1-0 win over Young Lions, became the third-youngest player to score in Singapore's 24-year-old professional football league, and its youngest match-winner.
Hariss Harun (16 years, 174 days) is the youngest scorer in the league when he netted against SAFFC in 2007, while Fareez Farhan (16 years, 331 days) is the next-youngest when he scored in 2011.
"I had a few things in mind (for the celebration), and usually I'll just jump and pump my fist in the air.
"But after I scored, I just lost control of the situation," the youngster sheepishly told The Straits Times, ahead of Geylang's game against Hougang United on Saturday (April 20).
Born to a Singaporean father and a Greek mother, Chua grew up in Kastoria, northern Greece, and moved to Singapore when he was 10.
His given name, Vasileios, means "King" in Greek, but is a mouthful for Singaporean tongues, and so his teammates and coaches call him "Bill", a shorter, direct translation.
Chua acknowledges he is still learning to juggle his professional football ambitions with his studies - he is a first-year student at Nanyang Junior College - but adds that milestones, like his maiden strike, give him the motivation to keep going in both.
"It was an extremely special moment, and it meant a lot to me," he said.
"Growing up and wanting to be a professional, it's a huge landmark to get your first goal. It was a dream come true.
"All I want to do now is give 100 per cent in all the games I play, and make sure I'm not content with what I have now; I have to keep improving and working hard."
Geylang coach Noor Ali, who coached Vasileios at Tanjong Katong Secondary School for four years, said: "Bill is a smart boy. As a coach, I'm proud to see a young player who can balance his studies and football, because I think that comes only with the right attitude.
"But he has just turned 17, and football-wise, he still has a long way to go."
Noor is hoping his side can continue their good form with a third win on the trot but noted Hougang, who are one spot above fourth-placed Geylang on the SPL table, are no pushovers.
It is perhaps a testament to the improvement of both teams - who occupied the bottom two spots last season - that a win for either on Saturday would propel them up to second in the league for at least 24 hours.
"We'll go out and play our normal game, but we also know Hougang have good quality and depth in their squad, and we have to keep an eye out for two or three players," said Noor.
"Both teams want to do well and move up the table, so I'm expecting a tough game."

Football: Benzema double helps Madrid win hectic game at Valladolid

VALLADOLID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid ended a three-game losing streak by winning 4-1 at Real Valladolid in a chaotic game on Sunday (March 10) in which the hosts had two goals ruled out, missed a penalty and hit the woodwork while the visitors had Casemiro sent off late on.
Karim Benzema scored twice after the interval with a penalty and a header from a corner to give Santiago Solari's side a 3-1 lead, after Raphael Varane struck in the 34th minute to cancel out Anuar Tuhami's goal for Valladolid five minutes earlier.
Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric then showed his class to stretch Madrid's lead in the 85th after Casemiro was dismissed for earning two bookings.
Modric's goal completed a highly entertaining and eventful match at the Jose Zorilla stadium, which experienced a power cut before kick off, although the game began on schedule.
The victory is unlikely to extend Argentine Solari's stay as coach, with reports in the Spanish media predicting he will be sacked on Monday having only taken the reins in mid-November.
Madrid had endured one of their worst ever weeks before the game, exiting the Champions League in the last 16 with a 4-1 home defeat by Ajax Amsterdam after sustaining successive losses to Barcelona which ended their hopes of winning any silverware.
Sunday's win took Madrid to 49 points and they are 12 adrift of leaders Barca and five behind second-placed Atletico Madrid.

MISSING PLAYERS

Solari's first game in charge of Real in La Liga was against Valladolid back in November and on that occasion his side also rode their luck, winning 2-0 with goals in the final 10 minutes after the visitors had hit the woodwork twice.
Real had a total of six players unavailable for this game including Gareth Bale, Vinicius Jr, Lucas Vazquez, Dani Carvajal and captain Sergio Ramos, but Solari still left Spain international Isco out of his matchday squad.
Valladolid made a determined start and were awarded a penalty when Oscar Plano's shirt was tugged by Alvaro Odriozola, but Ruben Alcaraz blazed over the bar from the spot - the fifth penalty in a row his side have squandered this season.
Valladolid forward Sergi Guardiola then had two efforts ruled out for offside in the space of two minutes after Video Assistant Referee (VAR) reviews.
However, the striker played a big part in Valladolid finally taking the lead, sliding to meet a cross at the far post and rolling the ball towards Anuar who tapped in from close range.
Madrid levelled thanks to some sloppy goalkeeping from Valladolid's former Barcelona goalkeeper Jordi Masip, who lost an aerial contest with Nacho, and Varane calmly knocked the loose ball over the line into the net with his studs.
The goal killed Valladolid's momentum and while Madrid did not sparkle in the second half, their superior quality shone through with Benzema's double and Modric's classy finish.

Barcelona have to learn to hit the target: Valverde
LYON • Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde let his players know in no uncertain terms their struggles in front of goal could cost them dear, admitting their 0-0 draw at Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie was a "dangerous result".
While the Spanish champions had the lion's share of possession on Tuesday, they were profligate with only five of 25 shots on target.
The home team, who were missing suspended captain Nabil Fekir, almost made them pay when Martin Terrier hit the bar early on.
Lionel Messi and his teammates were once again left frustrated on their travels and have now gone six away matches without winning in the knockout stages, scoring just a single goal in three years.
Luis Suarez's European form is of particular concern to Barcelona fans - he has yet to open his account this season and again failed to net away from the Nou Camp - a drought that dates back to Sept 16, 2015.
But Valverde dismissed Suarez's critics, insisting he was not worried as the Uruguay international was still "generating scoring chances, which is what is asked of a striker".
He said: "Even if he doesn't have chances, he creates them for his teammates. Opponents are frightened of him.

"Football is like that and strikers will have these streaks. The important thing is to have chances."
Defender Gerard Pique also backed his teammate to rediscover his touch in front of goal, claiming if "Suarez has shown one thing, it is that he has a lot of goals in him".
However, with Barcelona not at their flowing best after a run of four draws in their past five matches, Valverde conceded "the tie is in the air" when Lyon arrive in Spain for the second leg on March 13.
The Spaniard added: "I don't think it's very easy to win away from home in the Champions League. We have absolutely dominated and they have not lost in this competition this season.
"We played good football, but you have to hit the target as well, and we didn't. We deserved a better result and did enough to win. It just wasn't our night. We are on the right road, though and... we will try to win it in front of our fans."
