Football: Rashford strike lifts surging Man United into fifth
LEICESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer remains unbeaten 10 games into his caretaker reign of Manchester United as the rejuvenated Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba combined to earn a 1-0 win at Leicester on Sunday (Feb 3) to close in on the Premier League top four.
Rashford blasted home his sixth goal since Solskjaer took charge after taking an exquisite touch to control Pogba's lofted pass and United held out to move above Arsenal into fifth and within two points of fourth-placed Chelsea.
A 2-2 draw at home to Burnley in midweek is the only match Solskjaer has failed to win and much of that form is owed to the turnaround in both Rashford and Pogba's roles since Mourinho was sacked in December with United 11 points adrift of the top four.
Solskjaer again chose to leave Romelu Lukaku on the substitutes' bench, with Rashford preferred as his central forward.
The England striker took just nine minutes to respond with the crucial goal, having already missed a good chance when he headed over when unmarked from a handy cross by Nemanja Matic.
Rashford's confidence was clearly unaffected, as he took just four minutes to respond in style. Ricardo Pereira was the guilty party for Leicester with a dangerous ball that was intercepted by Pogba.
The Frenchman proceeded to display his deftness of his touch with a beautiful pass that was lofted over the Leicester backline for Rashford to run onto and he did the rest, taking a touch before drilling a low shot past a helpless Kasper Schmeichel.
However, as is often the case on the road, United relied on goalkeeper David de Gea for all three points as a Leicester side that have often troubled the top six this season improved after half-time.
Twice the Spaniard stood tall to deny Jamie Vardy, but De Gea's best save came from Rachid Ghezzal's free-kick that arrowed towards the top corner.
A Ghezzal goal would have been rich vindication for Leicester boss Claude Puel who was met with chants of "you don't know what you're doing" from his own fans for replacing James Maddison with the Algerian just after the hour mark.
Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire also failed to hit the target as the Foxes laid seige towards the United goal in search of an equaliser that never came to pile more pressure on the under-fire Puel.
His stock at Leicester remains on the slide but Solskjaer's at Old Trafford continues to soar.
Pedro scores an away goal as Chelsea recover from an early setback to draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

When Manchester City and Liverpool take to the field on the final day of the season tomorrow, it will be the eighth time in the Premier League era that the race for the title has gone down to the wire.
This season is also remarkable for the quality of the two contenders, with City and Liverpool on course to record the third-and fourth-best top-flight campaigns respectively since the league was formed in 1888 (behind Preston North End in 1888-89 and City last year).
City can secure back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history with a win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
But, if Pep Guardiola's men drop points and Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, the Merseyside club will secure their first league title since 1990.

Football: Liverpool fans in Madrid and Singapore celebrate Reds' Champions League win over Tottenham
SINGAPORE - They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday (June 1) with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.
Â
Â
Â
"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am on Sunday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."

Football: History made as women to referee men's AFC Cup clash between Yangon United and Naga World
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - The Asian Football Confederation announced Tuesday (May 14) that for the first time an all-female referee team will take charge of a men's continental club cup clash.
Japanese referee Yoshimi Yamashita and assistants Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi will officiate the AFC Cup match between Myanmar's Yangon United and Cambodia's Naga World at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.
"This will be the first time three female referees preside in the Asian Football Confederation's club competitions, marking a new milestone in Asian refereeing," the AFC said in a statement.
The AFC Cup is the second-string Asian club competition, a rung below the AFC Champions League.
Women officials have only previously been employed as assistant referees in AFC Cup matches, with Australians Sarah Ho and Alysson Flynn becoming the first in 2014.
"This is one of my dreams," said the experienced Yamashita, who officiated in the 2016 and 2018 Fifa U-17 Women's World Cup and 2018 Women's Asian Cup.
"We've worked very hard and this is the result."
Â
Assistant referee Teshirogi said her appointment will inspire female referees in Asia while Bozono said the experience will help in her preparations for the FIFA Women's World Cup in June, where the trio will be among 12 officials from the AFC.
"It is exciting to work with Yoshimi and Naomi. They are very experienced and have been very supportive. I will learn a lot from them," Bozono said.

Football: Vardy double gives Leicester comfortable 4-1 win at Huddersfield
HUDDERSFIELD, England (REUTERS) - Striker Jamie Vardy scored twice to help Leicester City to a commanding 4-1 victory over relegated Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday (April 6).
It was a fourth win in a row for manager Brendan Rodgers who took charge of Leicester in February as Huddersfield missed the chance to move off the bottom of the standings for the first time since December.
"We got off to a good start, getting the first goal of the game again, which is important," Rodgers told reporters.
"We had other opportunities to be more convincing in the first half on the breakaway but didn't quite finish them and the keeper made a couple of good saves."
Leicester's Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with a long-range strike following a corner in the 24th minute.
Vardy doubled the lead three minutes after the break when he got on the end of a sublime cross from right back Ricardo Pereira.
Huddersfield halved the lead four minutes later when midfielder Aaron Mooy converted a penalty after Caglar Soyuncu brought down Karlan Grant.
James Maddison restored Leicester's two-goal advantage with a free kick in the 79th minute.
Goalkeeper Ben Hamer misjudged the trajectory and took a step to his right before realising too late that the shot was headed to his left.
"When they scored the third our heads dropped and it's difficult," Mooy told BBC.
"We've had such a tough season and it's just another day when we were not good enough. It's been a really hard week emotionally."
Vardy sealed victory with a penalty when Terence Kongolo fouled him after he had rounded the goalkeeper.
It was his 104th goal for Leicester, going past former England striker Gary Lineker's haul for the club, and his 15th league goal of the season.
"I can take positives, we don't like the result at all," Huddersfield manager Jan Siewert said.
"At halftime we were down 1-0 and we changed it and came out and tried everything... and they scored too easily."
The result lifted Leicester to seventh in the standings with 47 points from 33 games, ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference.

Argentina coach fine after mishap
MADRID • Argentina's national football coach Lionel Scaloni has been released from hospital in Mallorca, Spain, after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle, the country's football association said yesterday.
The team also tweeted: "Lionel Scaloni suffered an accident today while cycling. He is now on his way home after being discharged from hospital."
Spanish daily El Mundo earlier said the former Lazio and Deportivo La Coruna defender, who was named Argentina's permanent coach in November, was taken to the Hospital Universitario Son Espases on the resort island with multiple injuries.
Local emergency services added the 40-year-old suffered a "facial injury" and "several bruises" after being knocked to the ground by a vehicle that was reversing near a school in the port of Puerto Portals.
However, he posted an update on his condition yesterday, with a reassuring message that read: "Many thanks for all the messages I've received, just a few stitches and home. Thanks to everyone."
Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia also corroborated his account, tweeting that "he was fine, he had an accident in Mallorca and thank God, he has been given the all clear".
Scaloni will oversee the team's Copa America campaign this year, with Argentina bidding to win their first major trophy since 1993.
He made seven international appearances before retiring from playing in 2015, joining Jorge Sampaoli as his assistant at Sevilla in 2016 and following him when he was appointed the national coach in 2017.
While the former Chile coach was sacked in the wake of Argentina's disastrous World Cup campaign - they barely scraped through their qualification group only to be eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual winners France - Scaloni stayed on as caretaker coach before being handed the full-time reins.

Signs of Manchester United revival in loss to City: Wes Brown
Signs of Manchester United revival in loss to City: Wes Brown
Alarm bells may have rung at Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-0 derby defeat on Wednesday, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly summoned to a crisis meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward the next day.
But former United defender Wes Brown saw a glimmer of hope, one that could spark a reversal of fortunes and hopefully propel the Red Devils to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.
"Manchester City have been the best team in the league over the last two years and they could not ease up on any games as well, but I felt we did well in the first half," said the 39-year-old.
"We kept the ball well, pressed a bit... then City came out in the second half and scored two goals.
"I am sure goalkeeper David (de Gea) will be disappointed, especially with the second goal, but mistakes happen."
Sixth-placed United face a must-win three-game run-in, beginning with Chelsea tonight. The Blues are fourth with a three-point cushion while Arsenal, in fifth, have two more points.
"The fourth spot is still alive, I reckon," added Brown, who will be watching the game with fans at the Clarke Quay Fountain Square during the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
"We've to win all our games and hope there's a fall elsewhere. It's all about creating our own chances, and getting a bit of luck on our side."
All three teams have blown hot and cold at the tail end of the season. Chelsea have won just three of their last seven games while Arsenal have lost three of their last four.
United have lost four of their last six, a dip in form which coincided with Solskjaer being made permanent manager on March 28.
Before that, United were unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions under the Norwegian, who took over after Jose Mourinho's sacking last December.
Asked what he felt had gone wrong, Brown, who played alongside Solskjaer in United's 1999 Treble-winning side, said: "I wish I could tell you. There's obviously been a drop in confidence somewhere, but I know from my playing days that when that happens, you just have to work harder as a team and pull it out from somewhere."
The former England man added that, regardless of whether United qualify for next season's Champions League, having the right players at the club will be crucial.
There has been speculation over the future of goalkeeper de Gea, record signing Paul Pogba and misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku, among others, in recent weeks.
Said Brown: "It's not like you can get rid of seven or eight players and bring in the same number of top-quality players in one summer. It'll take a period of time.
"But I'm sure Ole has got players in mind he wants to sign, and I'm sure he wants them in early. He knows what he needs... after (the 4-0 loss at) Everton, he talked about wanting more running, wanting people to be fitter.
"Ole's watching and seeing every day in training, and he understands who has been giving his all and who hasn't."

Man Utd's 6-1 loss to Man City is my 'worst ever day' - Sir Alex Ferguson. 24 Oct 2011; The warning signs have been there for Manchester United in home games against Chelsea, Basle and even
Alarm bells may have rung at Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-0 derby defeat on Wednesday, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly summoned to a crisis meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward the next day.
MASS EXODUS UNLIKELY
It's not like you can get rid of seven or eight players and bring in the same number of top-quality players in one summer. It'll take a period of time.
WES BROWN, former Manchester United defender, on the speculation over some players' futures.

TOKYO (AFP) - Former Japan striker Kazuyoshi Miura, who turns 52 next month, has extended his record as the J-League's oldest player after renewing his contract with Yokohama FC, the club said.
The veteran footballer, admiringly nicknamed "King Kazu" for his spirited on-field style, will kick off his 34th career season this year, the second division club announced on Friday (Jan 11).
"I thank fans for supporting me all the time," Miura said in a brief statement.
"I want to work out at full stretch every day... and play as many games as possible by making every minute count."
In 2017, Miura surpassed football's previous professional longevity record and became the oldest player to score a competitive goal in a professional match. Both records were previously held by English legend Stanley Matthews.
Last year he played nine games for Yokohama but failed to score.
Miura left Japan for Brazil in 1982 and signed a contract with Santos FC in 1986 to make his professional debut.
He made his Japan debut in 1990 and pushed for the country's first ever World Cup appearance in 1998 but failed to join the final squad for France despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national side.
He was one of the stars of the professional J-League at its 1993 launch before joining Italy's Genoa on loan the following year.
Miura, who has played for Yokohama since 2005, has said he wants to play on until he turns 60.

Football: Spurs fan fined after throwing banana skin at Arsenal's Aubameyang
LONDON (AFP) - A Tottenham fan was fined on Tuesday (Dec 18) for throwing a banana skin at Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after a court ruled it was a targeted incident with a "racial element".
Averof Panteli admitted hurling the item onto the pitch at the Emirates Stadium after the Gabon striker scored and celebrated in front of Spurs' travelling support on Dec 2.
The 57-year-old van driver said he threw the banana skin in a "spur of the moment" action but strongly denied there was any racist intent, a magistrates' court in London heard.
But magistrate Mervyn Mandell said: "We find it was a targeted gesture to throw a banana skin after a goal was scored by a black player. We have in the circumstances found the racial element was there."
Panteli was handed a four-year football banning order after pleading guilty to throwing a missile and was also fined £500 (S$800).
Leila Rasool, mitigating, said Panteli had been going to Tottenham games for 50 years without incident and was of "exemplary character" but had since been banned for life by the club.
She told the court: "It was a spur of the moment thing. He picked up the closest article to him and that happened to be a banana skin.
"He realised the grave error he had made. He has not been charged for any racially aggravated public order offence."
After the pulsating 4-2 derby win, Premier League joint topscorer Aubameyang posted a picture of himself on social media with the caption: "whysmandoingthis?" accompanied by a banana emoji.
The incident triggered a fresh debate about racism in football, with former Arsenal striker-turned-pundit Ian Wright saying it had "embarrassed" the Premier League.
Raheem Sterling was subsequently subjected to alleged racial abuse during Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea - the Stamford Bridge club banned four supporters pending an investigation.
Chelsea also condemned anti-Semitic chanting from some of their fans during last week's Europa League tie with Vidi in Budapest.

Football: 'Proud' Pochettino hints he could stay at Spurs after Champions League defeat
MADRID (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino kept tight-lipped about his future as Tottenham Hotspur coach after his side lost the Champions League final to Liverpool on Saturday (June 1).
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus and German giants Bayern Munich but suggested he may stay to try to guide Spurs to another final after their 2-0 defeat in Madrid.
"When you live this experience you want to do it again. I hope we can do it again in the future," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"It's about trying, it's about believing, it's about building, and I hope it happens again as soon as possible."
Spurs fell behind to a Mohamed Salah penalty almost straight after kick-off but were the better side after the break before Divock Origi arrowed home the decisive second.
"You never believe that after one minute you're going to be 1-0 down, a situation that not only changed our plans, it changed the dynamic (of the game)."

LONDON • European champions Real Madrid displaced Manchester United as the world's highest-earning football club after the Premier League side's underperformance on the pitch in recent seasons ate into their dominance off it.
United slumped to third place, below both Real and Barcelona based on revenue for the 2017-18 season, financial services firm Deloitte said in its annual Football Money League yesterday.
The Red Devils have been the wealthiest club for two of the past three years and eight times in the last two decades.
Clubs in the Premier League - which has the highest broadcast revenue - took six of the top-10 spots, but LaLiga's two biggest teams prevailed thanks to their Champions League prowess and supremacy at home.
The changing of the guard in football's financial list mirrors the contrasting on-field fortunes of United and Real of late. Santiago Solari's men have won the Champions League for the last three seasons while, in the same period, United have failed to get past the last 16.
Their annual revenue was also hit by a slump in the British pound, growing only 1.5 per cent to £590 million (S$1 billion). Real, on the other hand, surged 11 per cent to €751 million (S$1.1 billion).
A spokesman for United said the club were "not too concerned" about financial league tables from year to year as the team remain a top global sports brand by any measure.
Part of their confidence lies in the fact that the Premier League still dominates the money pile.
There are a further five English top-flight teams in the top 10, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, with even relegation-threatened Newcastle making the top-20 cut despite going trophyless since 1969.
Tottenham, who are waiting to move into a 62,000-capacity stadium, re-entered the top 10 for the first time since the 2006-07 term.
Italian Serie A champions Juventus, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the 2010-11 season despite signing former Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the close season.
Weaker broadcast revenue in Italy relative to other big European leagues means Juventus have to do better than their rivals in the Champions League to bridge the gap.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are backed by wealthy Middle East owners, are in fifth and sixth place.
Both are, however, facing claims they have breached the Financial Fair Play regulations, but City and PSG have denied any wrongdoing.

Football: Pilot in Emiliano Sala tragedy still missing, family launch fundraising campaign to find him
LONDON (AFP) - The family of the pilot of the small plane that crashed over the English Channel while flying Argentine footballer Emiliano Sala to Britain has launched a fundraising campaign to find his remains.
British rescuers on Thursday (Feb 7) formally identified the one body pulled from the submerged wreckage as that of the 28-year-old striker.
But strong currents and winter weather forced them to call off the search before locating 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson - the only other person on the Piper Malibu propeller aircraft.
"As a family we are relying on the kindness of the good hearted people to help us raise the much needed funds to help us find our beloved Dad, Husband and Son," the GoFundMe page said. "To be told the search has now been called off for the foreseeable future has only made this tragic time more difficult."
The campaign had raised around £25,000 (S$44,000) by Saturday (Feb 9) morning - a fraction of its stated goal of £300,000.
The plane carrying Sala from the French city of Nantes to his new English Premier League club Cardiff City disappeared near the British island of Guernsey on Jan 21.
The Welsh club hoped Sala would help them avoid relegation from the world's most lucrative league this season after signing him from Nantes for a club record fee of £15 million.

The city of 335,000 has been in mourning for more than two weeks. Fans transformed the grounds around the stadium on Friday into a sea of bouquets and yellow-and-blue team scarves and jerseys in tribute to their fallen star, who had yet to play a game for them.
Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan said on Friday that the club have offered to pay to take Sala "back to rest" in his hometown of Progreso in rural Argentina.
"We've offered to arrange to take Emiliano back to rest with his family in Argentina," Tan told talkSPORT radio.
"Even though he will be there, his soul will always be in our hearts."
Sala's family said on Friday that his body's recovery and identification would help bring closure to "the most painful time of our life".
"We can now begin to mourn our son and our brother," they said in a statement, although they too asked for the search for Ibbotson to continue, saying that they are "hoping that the authorities will do their best to find him".

Reds urged to 'enjoy ride'
LONDON • Liverpool are inching towards a first league title in 29 years, but Jurgen Klopp has called on his team to bask in the journey with their supporters and not be consumed by the "Holy Grail" of lifting the Premier League crown.
The Reds' 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Cardiff on Sunday restored their two-point lead over champions Manchester City (86 points), who will play their game in hand against cross-town rivals Manchester United tomorrow.
While Pep Guardiola's men will return to the top of the table should they win at Old Trafford, it has still been a season to cherish for Klopp and his players, with just three league matches left.
He said: "If you are only motivated to win the (league title), then something is wrong with you. We want to win football games because we enjoy the ride with the fans.
"In the end, we will see how many points we have and then we get what we get."
Georginio Wijnaldum's second-half opener - a cleverly worked corner routine which resulted in Trent Alexander-Arnold's cutback - and James Milner's late penalty secured a ninth consecutive win in all competitions for Klopp's men, a result he called "really massive".
The German said: "We spoke a lot about this game, how special it is, how special the situation is for the opponent. It was not a game for playing around. It was a battle of will, who wants it more."
He also revealed that Wijnaldum's strike was from "not from the training ground, but from the dressing room at half-time when the boys decided to do that".
He said: "We put a lot of emphasis on set pieces. We know Cardiff are outstandingly strong on offensive set pieces but, from time to time, they have problems with defensive set pieces. Some of the boys obviously found that out.
"A brilliant goal, I loved it."
He blasted the playing surface, which was not watered despite the baking temperatures and was "bone hard".
He said: "The ball didn't roll like normal. Everybody saw it. Dry pitches are dangerous for the players injury-wise and you know why people leave the pitch dry.
"The ball doesn't roll that quick and it's difficult for the fluency of the game."
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock denied he had ordered his groundsmen not to water the pitch and did some finger pointing of his own - at Mohamed Salah, who won Milner's spot kick. He accused the forward of going down too easily and that he could not have "got much higher off the diving board".
Klopp insisted it was a penalty because Cardiff captain Sean Morrison "used the hand four or five times".
He started the mind games ahead of City's tricky trip to United, who were routed 4-0 at Everton on Sunday, saying he is not counting his chickens yet.
"Even if United get a point or something, we still have to play games after that. We just have to stay focused on our things," said Klopp, whose team host Huddersfield on Friday.
"Some people up in Liverpool might ask us if we're thinking about Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals (on May 1).
"We'll be completely focused on Huddersfield."

Â
BONE HARD
Dry pitches are dangerous for the players injury-wise... the ball doesn't roll that quick and it's difficult for the fluency of the game.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, is not happy with the pitch at Cardiff.

LONDON • Manchester City, branding themselves as "The Fourmidables", celebrated their domestic treble with an open-top bus parade on Monday, drawing an estimated 100,000 fans to the streets of the city centre.
Pep Guardiola's City became the first side to complete a clean sweep of all three major English trophies with last Saturday's 6-0 thrashing of Watford in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
They had clinched a second successive Premier League title the previous week and also won the League Cup in February.
It was the fourth time in seven years the club had taken over the city centre for a celebratory parade.
Adding the Community Shield to the tally, the club showed off their trophies and had banners with the words "The Fourmidables".
The victorious squad were joined by members of the City women's team, who also won an FA Cup and League Cup double this year.
Manager Guardiola insisted he has not thought about next season, but admitted Vincent Kompany will be missed after the captain confirmed his departure to become player-manager at Anderlecht.
"Zero," the Spaniard said when taking to the stage. "Now is time for good dinners and good wine. We will think about it in one month's time, and enjoy it now.
"I think we will miss Vincent a lot. He is coming back in the future in some way. It is an incredible way to finish the season."
Kompany said he realised the time was right to leave when he scored a stunning winner against Leicester in City's penultimate league match.
The 1-0 win took City to within one more win of the title, which they clinched with a 4-1 victory over Brighton on the last day.
Kompany said: "The moment that ball against Leicester went 'top bins', I knew I was done. I couldn't do anything better. It felt right."
The Belgian now expects the club to go on and achieve even greater success. "This team are ready to achieve so much more," he said.
"I've given everything I could for this club. I can't tell you how proud of that I am. I have nothing left. I have given everything."
He ended his speech by declaring City were the "best club in the world" regardless of European success: "I do not care if you win the Champions League or not, you are the best club in the world."
Organisers said the crowd for the parade, which culminated with the stage show outside Manchester Cathedral, was estimated to be around 100,000.
Before the parade, a video had emerged online of the league trophy being smashed to pieces at City's training ground, as players Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne looked on from a balcony above.
The video indicated that the trophy was dropped but the incident turned out to be just an elaborate prank for City's in-house City TV, as confirmed by Sky Sports.

Football: Manchester United poised to seal 15m signing of Swansea winger Daniel James
(THE GUARDIAN) - Daniel James is set to become Manchester United's first signing of the summer after Championship side Swansea accepted a fee that could rise to around £18 million (S$31.2 million) for the Wales international.
The 21-year-old is undergoing a medical check-up at United on Thursday (June 6), after Wales gave him permission to leave their training camp, with the winger poised to sign a long-term contract.
United's interest in James first surfaced towards the end of the season but the move was put on hold after the player's father, Kevan, died suddenly.
With James back in the international fold this week, after telling Ryan Giggs, the Wales manager, that he felt up to joining the squad, the wheels were set in motion for his transfer to go through.
It is understood that United will pay £15 million up front for James, who had 12 months remaining on his contract at Swansea, with the rest to follow in add-ons.
He will be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first signing, with the United manager looking to rebuild after a hugely disappointing end to the English Premier League campaign.
It has been a whirlwind 12 months for James, who joined Swansea from Hull in 2014, when he was an academy player. He burst onto the scene at Swansea under Graham Potter last season and quickly caught the eye with his extraordinary pace.
Â
Â
Â
James was set to join Leeds on deadline day in January, in a loan that would become permanent if the Championship club won promotion, but Swansea pulled the plug at the last minute.
James was bitterly upset but he never dwelt on that disappointment and turned in some outstanding performances in the second half of the season, including scoring a remarkable individual goal during the 4-1 victory over Brentford in the FA Cup fifth round, when he covered 84 yards in 8.48 seconds.
A month later James marked his first competitive start for Wales with the only goal of the game against Slovakia and by that time it was clear that he was not going to be staying at Swansea beyond the end of the season.
His breathtaking speed wreaked havoc in the Championship, no more so than when Swansea, who eventually ended 10th, beat Stoke 3-1 in April. Two Stoke players were sent off for fouling James, who also scored with a brilliant curling shot.

Klopp wants 'no regrets'
Klopp wants 'no regrets'
LONDON • Liverpool will look to finish the season as strongly as possible so that there will be no blame attached to their players even if they do lose out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
The Reds (88 points) trail City by one point with three games to go and manager Jurgen Klopp has every intention to take the title race right down to the wire.
At a press conference ahead of today's clash at home to relegated Huddersfield, he said: "There are three games left, we want to win them. Huddersfield, Newcastle and Wolves. That's the situation.
"If we win it, we win it. If we don't, there are no regrets as long as we give our best.
"If we win our next two games, then the title will be decided on the final match day and that would be pretty special."
His men are looking to win their first league title since 1990 but, regardless of how they finish, he insisted his players would continue to grow and improve as they were far from "the finished article".
The German said: "The club and the people are waiting for a long time for it (the title).
"It's rather surprising because last season, we were 25 points behind (City).
"We have to carry on, but only one team will be champions. However the season ends up, it is only the first step. We will carry on and we will see.
"We don't only play for being champions at the end of the season. Yes, it's a big target and we are pretty close and have a chance, but it's the first time, not the last time."
While his team have to travel to Barcelona for the first leg of their Champions League semi-final next Wednesday, Klopp confirmed he would not be tinkering with his first XI against Huddersfield.
The 51-year-old said: "This will be the last game I overthink anything. I will not push that preparation with a fresh line-up. We have enough time to recover for the next game. Barcelona have nothing to do with Friday night."
He also touched on the Professional Footballers' Association's Team of the Year that was revealed yesterday, claiming more should have been included as "his team are (the) team of the season anyway".
Four of his players - Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane - made the list.
Klopp added: "From my point of view, there could have been four, five, six, maybe seven more players involved.
"The players in the league make the decision so it's the most honest competition of the year.
"Mo (Salah) deserved to be in there, Gini (Wijnaldum) plays an incredible season, Hendo (Jordan Henderson), if it was today, he would probably be in. All the players deserve to be in."
